I love the look of this! It looks way easier than I thought it would be, but I am certain it is way easier than it looks. Hmmm. Back to where we started. Very nice!
I have that exact same jig but it's made out of wood pretty sure it's when he first designed it so there's probably some new stuff added wood to the plastic one but man I use it and it works great I won it in someones giveaway a WHILE ago.still use it and still works great!
That was a great video, David! The two of you really work well together. I had to stop watching halfway thru so I could order the dovetail jig. Wish me luck.
Was excited about this video after I heard you talk about it at Dayton Maker Faire this past weekend! Actually bought a Katz-Moses jig after your last video when I decided I want to try making dovetails.
It is truly bizarre how many there are lol My exgf is in IT and she started making longboards from scratch and now makes electric skateboards for fun, she makes custom wooden decks and stuff, and her brother is also a computer guy, he works in coding and he started making pens on a lathe... lmao I also know another computer guy who makes bat houses for fun and has a big woodshop. I had no clue bat houses were a thing, but I now own 3 of them. I guess computer people really daydream about woodworking!
"scrap wenge" ha ha. That cracked me up! You'll get some blow back for that (which is I'm sure what you wanted). Really good video, and your step dad's music was very good!
hi Johnathan, I know this is an older video but I’ve been working on making this box and I have your 6:1 Dovetail jig but I’m wondering which angle dovetail jig you used in the video because mine is not coming out with the same ratio for the tails. also in this video, it looks like you’ve made the pins really wide with the light colored wood. did you make them the same width as the tails on the walnut? thanks for the help. Love your channel and your tools.
It’s almost imperceptible, but when you split the finished box, you also shorten the middle dovetail by the thickness of the kerf of the blade used to split the box. Maybe this kerf thickness could be added to that middle dovetail (or whatever dovetail contains the division between top and bottom pieces) in order to maintain symmetry. Regardless, the box is absolutely, 100%, nothing short of stunning.
Btw, I saw your video from Jonathan's channel and just subscribed. I'm a DIY'er and builder as well with a passion to inspire others. I always enjoy learning from others and hit the subscribe button to support you!
Before watching the video, I thought that there might be some sort of voodoo or witchcraft involved making these dovetail joints. Then after watching it was like a palm to forehead moment... Can't wait to win the box and jig set to try this out for myself! Thanks for the ideas, guys. Keep on rolling with the great content. Frank
god they make this look easy. i just want to say that if you try this. try like 10 with wood you dont care about. cause your first 10 are not going to look good if youre are doing them by hand XD. A dovetail bit for a router would make this job alot faster, however i cant knock the craftsmanship that is incredible
Well man, you guys are impressive, the other day was the first time I came across one of your videos and i'm addicted. I'm green with this stuff but I HAD to buy your jig, i'll probably get it today!! Thank you for the content! I hope I can do this one day! If I showed you my 1st attempt you would die laughing!!!
This wasn't as fun as previous videos but.... Damn! That's such a cool technique, and explained so well that I feel like even I (a non woodworker) could do these joints, and that jig is so simple but so brilliant! So yeah, great work!
These videos are great, but the one thing that is never shown is how to cut the wood to length. Can you discuss that one time. I have done this before following the videos, but the size of the wood is almost always off a little cause I did not measure the length of the wood correctly
What kind of vise are you using? I'm assuming it's a tail/end vise but I don't understand how you're able to get the wood that far down into it without hitting any of the supports?
Its an ancient dovetail technique that involves sticking a chisel in your hand 3 days before you're supposed to fly to Ohio to shoot a video that will be viewed by thousands of people.
Meanwhile, I'm over here still trying to do plain finger joints in 1x cedar making them tight enough to look good, but not so tight that the brittle cedar splits when I push the 2 boards together...
I like the guitar music in the background, but it's definitely a bit too loud in some scenes, making it hard to hear you guys. Other than that, great video! Love the technique, it looks real sharp.
If I even had a tiny smidgen of wenge sawdust, I would make a mold and glue it together. I would be proud to have something so nice as that (normally, I cringe at sawdust and glue "counting" as wood), but I wouldn't even consider that to be scrap, because....wenge, lol. Scrap wenge? ROFL!
Yo, when Katz-Moses compliments your chisel sharpness you know you're doing something right.
Watching your videos have gotten me back into woodworking and helped me loose weight by actually doing something instead of sitting around
Excellent! Never knew they were made this way. Easier, but they are still handcut dovetails. Practice, here I come.
Those are beautiful. I struggle with a regular dovetail much less that beauty of a joint. Love it!
I was watching this video and noticed dude had his hand wrapped, I have to say I have a lot of respect for a youtuber who does his own stunts.
This whole concept just broke my brain. Fricken awesome.
nice to see you two working together!!
I really love the scrap piece of Wenge. That's what I chisel on too!
Hehe! 😁
This is really cool. I love the way the joint looks with the contrasting woods. Once I master basic dovetails, I hope to try this.
Sure, this video is educational, but that REM reference was icing on the cake.
Nice work guys!
Katz - Moses is the beast from the east!!!
I love the look of this! It looks way easier than I thought it would be, but I am certain it is way easier than it looks. Hmmm. Back to where we started. Very nice!
Such an incredible time. Thanks again David!
You are fun to work with! Hope our paths cross again before too long!
That JK-M jig and Knew Concept coping saw FTW. Nice!!
UNBELIEVABLY AWESOME!
I have never seen these before and the method was surprising simple. Great video.
Just ordered your 8:1 jig and noticed that your shop is just down the street from my office. Keep up the good work!
I have that exact same jig but it's made out of wood pretty sure it's when he first designed it so there's probably some new stuff added wood to the plastic one but man I use it and it works great I won it in someones giveaway a WHILE ago.still use it and still works great!
Thanks for another great video and love that you replied to that guy with the shoe thing
That was a great video, David! The two of you really work well together.

Great video man! You need to work with Jonathan more, you guys have a good thing going!
Wenge is ok for a scrap chiseling board. But I much prefer a wide slab of ebony.
I can see how some would prefer ebony.
King's Fine Woodworking I prefer ebony as well, and cleaned with tears of pandas.
King's Fine Woodworking, i use a concrete slab with a towel over it
I use my non-dominant hand as my chiseling board.
Jared Wittekind 😂😂😂
Great video showing an approachable way to get a really amazing effect.
That box was beautiful and the video was great but i really dont think im ready to attempt anything like this just yet
Just bought your dovetail jig. This thing is awesome! Thank you very much
Amazing. It looked like it was going to be so much more complicated. Thanks for making making less intimidating!
That is a very nice box, allot of work into it. Nice job!
HOLY CRAP DAVID!! That is crazy awesome!!😊👊👊 fantastic job!!
THAT IS BEAUTIFUL! I'll be doing this sometime soon.
Awesome collaboration videos you guys all work together so awesome. And this box is amazing thank you for being such awesome inspiration.
It's amazing how many of us in the IT industry get into woodworking to escape computers.
YEP! We need to use our hands!
For something other than??????...... And I'm not thinking about keyboarding.......
Previous computer engineer here. That's because computers are evil haha
It's because with all the math and problemsolving in the design, it makes woodworking a pretty nerdy artform. :)
It is truly bizarre how many there are lol

those inlays are beautiful!
Awesome job David! 👍
Wow, that's really beautiful!

Awesome dovetails and collab, where are you guys from?
Btw, I saw your video from Jonathan's channel and just subscribed. I'm a DIY'er and builder as well with a passion to inspire others. I always enjoy learning from others and hit the subscribe button to support you!
I know I'm a few days late but I love it
Was that a little Jay Bates Cheez-It tribute during the sanding?
Brian Nelson yep ;-)
beautiful work👌

Frank
Never done dove tails but that looks fantastic. One of these days I guess.
Awesome looking box. :)
Dude top notch stuff!
I'm loving these videos! Do you know if he is using the 8:1 or the 6:1 jig from his shop?
Matthew Wolfe 8 to 1
Thanks! Edit: Ordered! :)
Thanks my friend!
Really beautiful!

Well done guys.
Can you explain with more explanation (example) how is the initial measurement of the pins
Well man, you guys are impressive, the other day was the first time I came across one of your videos and i'm addicted. YO DAWG I HERD YOU LIKE DOVETAILS
+Randy Allaway so I got you some dovetails for your dovetails!!!
That is so awesome.
Mmmm where have i seen this before? :-) Nice video.
Chad Stanton quadruple inlaid dovetail collaboration? ;-) love your stuff Chad.
So the maple is just attached to the longer pieces of walnut, and the pins cut smaller on the short sides?
Awesome looking box!! Am I to late for the give way?!?!
Nice video 👍

Amazing video and amazing channel and I subscribed friend amazing job 😀😎
What is the difference?
6:1 , 8:1 ?
Thanks!
lunch time tacos with david, good times.
43 seconds after Liked and shared already!
Thanks for your Patreon support! Much appreciated!
Pretty cool!
That is awesome!
Though I don't have a bandsaw, why wouldn't you use one to split the box as opposed to using your tablesaw?
Haha, does the scrap wenge still have the $50 price tag on it?
These videos are great, but the one thing that is never shown is how to cut the wood to length. Can you discuss that one time. I have done this before following the videos, but the size of the wood is almost always off a little cause I did not measure the length of the wood correctly
Nice box
What kind of vise are you using? I'm assuming it's a tail/end vise but I don't understand how you're able to get the wood that far down into it without hitting any of the supports?
Katz it's a regular bench vice with wood jaws
Ok. Thanks.
I don't understand how to determine the depth of the rabbet. Why did you use 1/3 the board thickness?
Solid video as always. I probably just haven't read far enough down the comments but what is the tape on Katz Moses' hand for?
These are "hand cut" dovetails...

Awesome...!

what did you use to finish? love the look!
i am guessing is it oiled linseed oil based on the description lol. i’m an idiot
Amazing.

I love this channel! But you could feel the awkwardness the whole time lol
WTF somehow I wasn't subscribed anymore!?
Well, time to sub again :p
My workbench is purpleheart.
R.I.P. Pete Burns
Hopefully i will be good one day.
Awesome video. It's a coincidence that I'm going to attempt double dovetails here soon but I'm using my router because I'm an asshole.
Great box and video but wtf kind of measurement is 2 and a half sixteenths...lol @9:07
hahahaha. That's how my brain works when the ruler on the combo square isn't facing the correct way
What does 6 to 1 8 to 1 mean
Just the tip #JustTheTip
Please, i need these
yeah yeah, very easy.. all you need is a carpentry !
All that work and attention to detail then you don't mitre the inside piece corners
The plastic jig is wobbling all over the place .User error .
He'd make a good step-dad. Just sayin.

Helo
What’s the deal with his hand why is he wearing that all the time?
