don't be art snobs people! it is a genuine question from someone who may not be an iconpgrapher..stop your snobbery.. this is the sort of nonsense egoism I couldn't stand as an art major..they are no different than academia snobs
Ive been a water gilder for over 5 years working in a framing company, your technique is very strange to me. Your burnishing off so much gold, you seem to be undoing so much work with repeated processes, why are you using your breathe to activate the glue, instead of mixing a dilute size mix and applying with a brush? it must take hours for that thick layer of bole to dry in a single application? those questions are kinda negative, sorry about that. I'm really impressed with how well the wax paper hold the leaf compared to a typical gilders brush, why do you choose that over transfer leaf?
indeed this technique is not suitable for frames. It works best on flat surfaces. It has the advantage that you don't have to deal with loose gold. for some people (like me) :-) having the leaf attached to wax paper for precise application is less stressful than using the suede pad, staticky brush and a leaf that can blow away or curl up with any air current or bit of static. It's really just a matter of preference.
@@oaktharas The tool looks like a piece of polished agate stone - find it at any gem show or rock hound place. Use anything to burnish that is very smooth and hard as this is delicate gold. You don't want wood which will grab the gold with its texture.
@@luizab221 Wax paper is a novel idea and one I will use, thanks! However, why you applied 3 very expensive coats of gold leaf, while rubbing most of it off, is still a mystery. As is the breath thing. I don't see how the gold will stick to the clay once it is burnished. Its not sticky. So won't the gold come off? I would use glue under the gold leaf. Also wish you had shown the final varnish coat.

Fascinating. This is the first time I have seen 3 layers. Ii knew gold would adhere to the red clay but I had no idea gold would adhere to gold. Beautiful work
Questions! 1) How does the gold leaf stay adhered when all that holds it is a bit of moist breath? 2) Water gilding vs sizing gilding - what's the difference in appearance and longevity? (Sizing seems to be fine with only one layer of leaf, too, in other icon videos I've seen.)

Not true. It just needs to be clean. When you use it . And yes this is why when using it you should have it on a handle . You are right in that. And well another mistake here is that she is wiping the gold with a cloth. The cloth is too hard on the gold.

There is a sacredness in painting Icons. One does not just paint these works of art.... this is a spiritual act. The subject is a religious one. It's, also giving of oneself and connecting yourself to the Divine. The whole thought process and emotions, give way, to it becoming 'a prayer'....Prayer takes over the work, emotions are put to sleep. The breathe on the paint, is sublime. One must understand what a halo represents, and the use of gold on a halo. In these particular paintings, a halo represents the death of the person, the way they died and for whom they died. They have been given with authority, to be called saints. They died for Christ. Gold being the most precious metal on earth. It was presented to Christ as one of the three gifts, by the three wise men. Gold represents Christ's Kingship. Christ, earned his kingship by dying to save us, as did these men in these icons. They died for love to Christ, they proved themselves. Martyred! Hence, gold and halo. See the amount of labour put into this piece.

Do you have a video for how to make red bole and substitutions for rabbit skin glue? Any other options for burnishing aside from using agate stone? For transferring gold leaf, does parchment paper work as well or does it have to be wax paper? What varnish did you use? Impressed with your quality of workmanship. There are different colours of bole, I've discovered, but the most common are Armenian red bole and also a yellow bole.

The crease at the top is really frustrating me. Why couldn’t the entire halo be inside the frame?
Either way, very nice work!

don't be art snobs people! it is a genuine question from someone who may not be an iconpgrapher..stop your snobbery.. this is the sort of nonsense egoism I couldn't stand as an art major..they are no different than academia snobs
In gothic period pices of paintings were made to continue on frame of painting, it goves it a little more plastic feeling.
我是做烫金设备的工厂看了你的视频很震撼,重新对这个工艺有了新的思考,很感谢
Ive been a water gilder for over 5 years working in a framing company, your technique is very strange to me. Your burnishing off so much gold, you seem to be undoing so much work with repeated processes, why are you using your breathe to activate the glue, instead of mixing a dilute size mix and applying with a brush? it must take hours for that thick layer of bole to dry in a single application?
those questions are kinda negative, sorry about that. I'm really impressed with how well the wax paper hold the leaf compared to a typical gilders brush, why do you choose that over transfer leaf?
I wonder if it is for durability, or maybe simply tradition. I know icons must follow certain traditions
indeed this technique is not suitable for frames.
What tool do you use to burnish?
It’s the whole process , shouldn’t be rushed. Should be contemplative in prayer and being one with the most High 🥲🙏🏻🙏🏻 beautiful ! I’m just trying my first icons xx

Fascinating. This is the first time I have seen 3 layers. Ii knew gold would adhere to the red clay but I had no idea gold would adhere to gold. Beautiful work
Очень большой расход золота
Questions!
1) How does the gold leaf stay adhered when all that holds it is a bit of moist breath?
2) Water gilding vs sizing gilding - what's the difference in appearance and longevity? (Sizing seems to be fine with only one layer of leaf, too, in other icon videos I've seen.)

I have been gold leafing trays taught by my mother. We must be clean and draft free to handle leaf. But the results on an intricate tray using an adhesive and a flat wide brush to lift the leaf is best for our work.sealing with a non yellowing coating, varnish,is the last process. Oh , many coats and lightly steel wool inbetween..

It is pure 24k gold leaf used ;)
It depresses me how rude, angry and riled-up some people can get whilst watching a video of an artist doing quality work. If you don't appreciate quality art then why, a) bother watching and b) bother commenting? Try to develop a little humanity guys and chill those negative vibes. You'll damage your health! This workmanship is beautiful to watch and to see, in my humble opinion. :)

I am not 100 % shure ,but I remember they say you not must to touch the agate stone with the hand. ...not to catch moisture or fat from human skin. That's why the agate stone designed for gilding has an handle !!!!
Not true. It just needs to be clean. When you use it . And yes this is why when using it you should have it on a handle . You are right in that. And well another mistake here is that she is wiping the gold with a cloth. The cloth is too hard on the gold.

This is amazing ❤ what is the surface? Is it gesso on board?
It's a great tip to lift the gold with waxed paper instead of a gilder's tip. I must remember that when I start my next gild :-)
keep in mind that the wax paper will only work with a minimal amount of moisture on the bole. It will also work with synthetic size

awesome! How about a sealant? What's next? Thank you! Same thing for gold leaf on metal? I only read about 30 comments, I can't believe no one asked about a sealant. How does the beautiful gold stay protected? Thank you again.
I am in the process of adding a video on varnishing, but many sealants can be used with this technique. I use linseed oil because it doesn't add extra gloss, but shellac, polyurethane, and many others will work as well. This technique is not suitable for gilding on a metal surface.

Amazing job👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Good work....
thanks!

How many sheets of gold did you end up using? I'm trying to figure out how many gold sheets I need to cover 78 tarot sized cards full (3.5" x 5.5").
I apply the same care into my own paintings. Beginner on applying gold leaf. Researching in depth first before applying my genuine 24k gold leaf.
Where did you buy your gold leaf? Is it genuine 24k?
