    I'm sure you already know this...
    since it is obvious that you're a professional...
    but to get a richer GOLD...
    you could paint RED first...
    let dry, then do the Gold Leaf... or if you
    want a more yellow gold, you paint Yellow under the
    gold leaf... it really makes a difference.
    The masters do this with SIGN painting too!

    That’s a nice tutorial for gold foil which behaves slightly different from Gold leaf. Another thing would be, With gold leaf you would definitely not waste any with this carefree application and the proper drying of adhesive is a must! One tip for knowing when the adhesive is ready for application, whether using metal sheeting or actual gold leaf is to notice when the adhesive is invisible.

    I use aa very soft fluffy round brush to "burnish" the surface of the gold when working with gold leaf. The way of the old Masters.

    • @Bluebelle51
      @Bluebelle51 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      that works with gold foil, REAL gold leaf needs an agate to burnish

    • @cuhurun
      @cuhurun 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@Bluebelle51 : absolutely. Until the late 19th century foil gold didn't exist. Gesso coated with a few layers of red-clay bole (naturally occurring in only two places on earth, France and Egypt), then an application of rabbit skin glue, followed by gold leaf was the original method of gilding. The gold leaf used by the 'masters' and iconographers was much thicker than the uniform machined foil available today, as it was traditionally gold laboriously hammered flat by hand. Medieval English 'Rosenoble' coins first issued in 1344 were considered the best quality, standard and controlled weight of gold to use, hence the finest quality of gilding gold is still known as Rosenoble . Then, for the final polish, agate burnishers were used to achieve an almost mirror finish. A couple of layers of linseed oil was then applied to help protect the finished product from moisture and damp.

I enjoy your train of thought as you go and the little tidbits of daily stuff "I live with a lot of people so I'm doing it outside since it stinks" Idk why I thought that bit of personality in between as well as the pacing of your voice is fun to listen to. Are there meant to be two tiny areas missing of gold leaf in between the horns? Or is it intentional? Its bugging me, i need to know! Lol. But wow, what excellent canvases and an excellent tutorial too! Definitely a keeper for me, thanks alot. 😜

    FANTASTIC artist! I have had a drawing ready to gold leaf for about 4 years and have had gold leaf in my posession for almost a decde!!! After watching you demo this, I feel confident to do finish my 4 year old drawing and to do many more. I'll be 73 this month and doing gold leaf will be a present to myself! Thanks for the lovely video. YES, I 'LIKED' AND 'SUBSCRIBED' .
