This channel is dedicated to showing the traditional technique for egg tempera painting from start to finish. The painting is done with layers of transparent paint called highlights and floats. The icons are gilded with 24k gold using red bole clay and natural hide glue, then burnished to a shine.

Fine details in 24k gold leaf for Byzantine Icon Painting
I painted these details using oil-based Mixtion. I had a hard time finding a water-based Mixtion solution that could hold such fine detail. If you know of any, pls let me know in the comments. It is important before you start gilding to dust the surface with rice powder. Since I am using Egg tempera, the gold leaf could stick to the oily tempera mixture. Rice powder is completely inert in a tempera painting and absorbs the extra oil properly.

I have been gold leafing trays taught by my mother. We must be clean and draft free to handle leaf. But the results on an intricate tray using an adhesive and a flat wide brush to lift the leaf is best for our work.sealing with a non yellowing coating, varnish,is the last process. Oh , many coats and lightly steel wool inbetween..

You are amazing, and is the gold leaf, real gold or is it imitation gold? Does this method work for both? Can the clay bole be used on a canvas vs a wooden canvas? I LOVE this video! I am so intrigued to learn a new technique to add to my art. Thank you for posting this.

Questions! 1) How does the gold leaf stay adhered when all that holds it is a bit of moist breath? 2) Water gilding vs sizing gilding - what's the difference in appearance and longevity? (Sizing seems to be fine with only one layer of leaf, too, in other icon videos I've seen.)

How long between laying each layer of GL on do you wait to burnish? Also what's the clay stuff? Where do you get the burnishing stone from? I'd love to give this ago. Can you use this on relief plaste too?

Yes, that should be ok. I varnish these with linseed oil at the end anyway.

I understand the first layer sticking due to the hide glue with the clay. What I don't understand, is how is it that the gold sticks on the third layer. Will gold permanently stick to gold if it is simply moist?

can this be done on glass? I make hollow glass sculptures and would love to be able to put gold leaf on my work, theres paint on enamels but I love how gold leaf looks
