  • A newly production of a French baroque frame made by Stockholms Förgyllning & Bildhuggeri
    ( www.stockholmsforgyllning.com ). It has earlyer been engraved and is here being gilded, using the technique of water gilding, a old and traditional way of gilding. After applying the gold it is then carefully polished to reach its full potential - shining gold. Then this frame is to undergo a final phase to recieve a nice patina, but that is another story....

    I’m almost in tears watching a true craftsman at work. The precision of her movements, the ease and economy of movement... I’ve never watched anyone gild something, I wanted to understand what water gilding was, so I looked up this video. Like I said, ive never seen it done, but there is a finesse, a economy of motion you can see in any true craftsman, and she’s got it. It’s simply breathtaking and beautiful

    For the gesso we use both brushes with swine-hair and synthetic-hair. For the bole and water just synthetic. We buy them from a local shop in Stockholm (ABC färgekonomi) and I asume that you could find them pretty much everywhere. Otherwise you could always try the german Company Leonhardy, they should have whatever you possibly could need.

    ...to destroy the laether on the pad. The pad being basicly a wooden plate covered with leater turned with the suede side outwards. The suede must be fine enough to create a good smooth surface for the gold. Then you need a thin layer of padding inside the pad to make it flexible enough, without being to soft, and every gilder has his or hers own preferences but we use old newspapers as a base and then cover it with a thin layer of cotton.

    The knife should have a perfect edge but without being Sharp. If its to Sharp you would cut the leather on the pad. But the edge cant have any faults since it then will destroy the edges of the gold when you cut it.

    perfection. All these “antiqued and distressed” things people “create” make me cringe, while this is proper and relaxing to look at. Why in the world is there even a trend to make something new and make it looking old is odd to me, things age with age, and back in the day nobody tried making something old, it’s just the modern people’s problem of some sort of psychological dissonance 😅 this is verrrrry pretty, love that there’s no lines, looking SOLID GOLD

    One question I have ...
    I try gilding and have some difficulty.
    Why is it that when the adhessive is applied thoroughly it does not help the gold leaf stick?
    I use the Mona lisa brand.

    Hi, tanks for your comment.
    The tool is a Burnishing tool made out of agate stone and it exists in many sizes and shapes. Long ago, atleast in sweden it was common to use wolf and bear teeth as burnishing tools. The gilders knife is also to be found at any gilder supplier but you can also make it out of a old table knife. The important thing is how you sharpen it, its cutting edge should be flawless not to damage the thin gold leaf when you cut it and at the same time it cant be to sharp...

    Very interesting. Since coloured paints have (mostly) always been available why was it necessary to gild frames and not paint them or otherwise leave them natural? Does gilding have any practical merits or is it purely decorative? Well, I suppose I'll have to start googling...

    How come scrubbing the gold foil after its been placed makes it look shinier? Is there a layer above it that mattes it out? What is that hook like brush used to scrub called?

    • @loonigoonie
      @loonigoonie 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ryan Chong The tool is an agate burnisher with the tip as an agate stone used for burnishing the gold leaf, polishing/compacting the gold leaf to the surface to a shiny level. Gold leaf is so thin so no there's nothing below that layer aside the prepared surfaces of gesso and bole layers.

    so i´d like to bother you with a few questions:
    what are you using for polishing? this tool, what material is it? glass, or horn
    and what is it you use to cut the gold leafs? is it just a moderately sharp kitchen knife and a syntethic leather cushion?

    It looks like you are using Gesso and then some sort of paint. Is this paint supposed to be similar in color to the gold leaf for coverage? Then, how does the water activate the rabbit skin glue (for applying the gold leaf) if there is layer(s) of Paint (?). I want to do this gold leaf method on sea shells, burnishing after. Can you please tell me a bit about the process (like 1st you paint gesso, then paint xxx, then you brush with water, then you apply leaf,then burnish....) Thnx SO MUCH!

      The second layer is a yellow "gilder's clay base". You add rabbit skin glue in it. The third layer is a red gilder's clay base, also called "Armenian bole", with the same glue in it.
      At the end, the final layer for fixing the gold leaf is water (+ alcohol + rabbit skin glue, in very small proportion)

      I get hired by billionaires of Vancouver to do their gilding in their homes. so all luck is on my side. thanks.
      if you have not heard of antique look in gilding, then I should not be the one to educate you.
      it's not sloppy work, it's actually much harder to make it purposefully imperfect then slapping gold leaf on there like candy wrappers. any child can gild like that. we have 16 year olds who do that at my company.

    • @aromn
      @aromn 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I understand what you're saying. Since the technique predates modern methods probably the original purpose was to make it as perfect as possible. If you take a closer look you will see the signs indicating the way it was made anyways. I of course have not seen anything done by your workshop so I should not say anything about that. For example in case of porcelain a light inspection easily reveals if it was hand painted with a brush or mass produced some way. I do not like intentionally screwed up patterns just to make it visible from meters that it was handmade.
