  • Step by step tv repair tutorial on a TCL 55s401 smart tv (Roku Version) with a backlight problem. In this video I'm going to show you how to fully disassemble this common television with a common backlight problem. The symptom is that when the TV is powered on, the white standby light at the bottom of the television flashes as though its about to come on, but absolutely no picture comes up. No picture flash or anything. Just a totally black screen. In most or all cases, its usually just one bad led on a backlight strip that causes this. So we are going to disassemble the television, find the 1 bad led, swap it out with a brand new led, and re-assemble the TV. Thus fixing the backlight failure, and repairing the television.

So I bought the replacement LEDs, laid it down on the table, opened up your video and started unscrewing... Just before I popped it apart I decided to plug it in, and the damn thing turned RIGHT back on. Brightest screen ever. It was dead for three weeks and just came back like nothing happened. Had this happen to my TV right before we left for traveling on Christmas after only 2 years of owning the TV. Stopped at the part of removing the screen as I do not have suction cups and do not want to risk bending it doing it by hand, but I have complete faith this will work when they come in on Tuesday. Definitely messed slightly as the WiFi wire came un-soldered from the ground plate when I tried to remove the chip, but thankfully that's quick and easy to fix in comparison to the rest of the disassembly.
    Thanks again for sharing your knowledge for us brave enough to try this on our own instead of trashing a fixable TV. It is most appreciated.

    Great Video....Running the backlight @ 100% will cause them to fail in a short time after factory warranty. Turn the backlight setting down to 65% and you wont overdrive and burn them out. Most TV's come with backlight factory preset to 100% out of the box.

    • @chrisriani
      @chrisriani 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I ran mine at like 30%...still died after 2.5 years. LEDs take 50K+ hours to die - I guarantee there is a heat/power issue, likely intentionally designed to fail right out of warranty, just like they do with LED lightbulbs that barely last longer than incandescent.

    Dude, best info out there for this TV. My TV had this problem. I didn't pull out the multimeter or nothing. Because I couldn't find it... I just ordered all new LEDs for $30 watch your video and replaced it. It went really well even though I used phone holders that attach to your windshield for suction cups because that's also all I had laying around. Sometimes you just gotta improvise. But it worked out great in the end I replaced all the LEDs hung the TV back up turned it on, it works beautifully. I watched five different videos about this and yours is by far the best. Thank you! Best vid of its kind on TH-cam! I fixed my TV. My only pointer to other people doing this repair, if your white reflector paper piece is glued down, don't try to pull it out like he does in this video, its much easier to just get a sharp razor and cut a straight line down along the side of each LED strip, then unplug each strip, remove and replace. You can get the replacement LED strips on Amazon for pretty cheap.

    Great Video! My Dad and I picked up a free 65" TCL TV that didn't work. The picture would flash for a second then turn off. We followed your video step by step. You are a great teacher. We replaced the backlights all together, and skipped the testing process like you did. That's just what we felt comfortable with. We did make a mistake however. While we reassembled the bezel to the screen, something must've been miss-aligned or we pushed too hard. We put 2 small cracks in the screen which distorted the image. The picture is alright, still better than no picture at all and not bad for only putting $80 into a 65" TV. Thanks for your help!

    Thanks Dude! It’s been driving me crazy. So many other videos aren’t addressing this problem. I turned it on and it flashed for a bit, I then took my bad ass Nebo flashlight and help it against the screen and I can see the Netflix and other app channels. It’s the back light! You rock. Now Idk if I’m going to try to fix it or get it fixed, but I will update you! You rock man!

    Big shout out to the big dog!!! After doing some reading I was 90% sure I had a bad LED. I didn’t want to invest in testers, etc so I just bought a set of replacement strips off eBay for $34 and suction cups from harbor freight for $8.
    Thanks to this awesome video $42 and 2 hours time and back in business, TV works great! Was fully prepared to spend $500+ on a replacement TV previously.

    If you’re following along as I was, listen to the man at 13:30 and be really careful lifting the screen out. I got the bright idea to try it without using suction cups, which is why my screen is now cracked. It got caught on the edge like he said so you really need to pry that off before trying to lift the screen. Sorry @bigdog8882 you did try to warn me and I didn’t listen. Great informative video though. Still feel like I learned something even though I have a busted TV to show for it.

    Awesome step by step tutorial, sir!! Was the issue basically a broken solder point since you did place a new one? My TCL did lose the picture but I fear its the taking apart, layer by layer, (LABOR) that would tend to be costly to fix. Yes, I did by a new Smart TV, but appreciated your video of what would be involved in the fix/repair of it. You obviously have done this a few times as you're very knowledgeable in showing the step by step process. Thanks you so much and hats off to you on this video!!!

    Hello and thank you for your video. I have a 49" Roku TCL TV I've had for about 2 yrs and is never really used as it's in my guestroom. My nephew has been with me for a week and using the TV and it just went black while he was watching it. We TH-cam'd many of the other video's to try and fix it and you're seemed to be the best. However I'm concerned I may not be able to do what you just did let a long have all the tools you have in your video to fix it. :-( Nonetheless, I wanted to thank you for sharing your video.
