- Welcome to today's video where you saw the renovation of an old chest of drawers.
These old chests of drawers were used to store objects, clothes and clothing accessories.
In the 18th century, chests of drawers became a symbol of the owner's wealth and social status, therefore chests of drawers were displayed in prominent places in the house, most often in the drawing room, and began to be referred to as chests of drawers.
Today's modern chests evolved from chests around the 13th century, which were hollowed out of a tree trunk and had regularly aligned outer sides as well as a lid.
It was only in the 15th century that chests appeared in the shape in which we would recognize them today.
This furniture was a rare commodity, but chests of drawers as we know them today did not develop until the 17th century.
Practical chests of drawers have their place even in today's modern times.
The shape of the dresser, the material used and the finish determine its style even in today's modern home.
And that's why I think our grandmothers' chests of drawers deserve to be solitaire.

I love this. 38 years ago I was given my great-grandmother's dresser and did a restoration of it (nowhere near as good as this). I used it for many years myself then gave it to a grand niece so she would have something from her great, great, great grandmother. This really touched my heart, Radek. Thank you so much. I so very much enjoy your restoration work. The sulfer wicks were a new one for me. It is wonderful to see techniques that work like the tannin and the wicks. Such a respectful result.
@@SouthOfGate Yes, my grandmother used wicks against Sitophilus granarius in grain and it works perfectly against beetles of the Anobiidae family. Thank you so much :)

Excellent restoration! This looks like a blanket box with a bottom drawer, made to look like a small chest of drawers. The little box inside at the top left is for storing candles. Best wishes from Scotland!

Nice restore. I haven't seen anyone use wood chips after finish remover since Joe L'Erario back in the 1990s.
The wood shavings absorb the paint remover and do not stick to the sandpaper during subsequent sanding.

I would like to give you two small tips that a master carpenter gave me:
Make the wood black behind the unused keyhole;
that hides the tricks from the manufacturer. 😉
Align the slots of the screws parallel to the longest side for an even better look.🫠

Absolutely! Fumigation is a must-do step in these renovations. There's plenty of borer-damaged furniture being renovated on youtube, with cosmetics only and no attention paid to the bugs that have been eating it.

Grandparents owned a very similar chest of drawers. It was taller with 4 drawers. My grandfather would remove the drawers and rub paraffin wax on their sides and glide areas. 👍👍👍

You gotta know they opened that chest, set the keys into that little side drawer, turned away to pick up whatever they were putting in the chest ... *_and the lid came crashing down!_* Of course, with the lid slamming down like that, the lock engaged and locked the trunk, with the keys inside.
Thanks for looking.The lock on the chest clicks like a door without a handle. Apparently, the original owner put the keys away, forgot about them and clicked the hatch.

Bravo, what an incredible restoration. Here in the states (USA) the interiors may have been lined with a thin layer of cedar wood to discourage insects and wood borers.
