In this video I restore a pair of antique oak chest of drawers, I found these on an auction site for next to nothing and was exited to see if I could bring them back to life. They were completely stripped back, stained in a dark oak and finished with a couple of coats of lacquer.
If you like this video please like and subscribe as it would make a huge difference to my channel, if you have any questions, I would be happy to answer them in the comments
Thanks for watching

Well done. And I like that there's a matching pair
thank you 😀
These are lovely. I would be proud to have them in my home. I would like to make a suggestion, if I may. I always use Howards Feed and Wax on the drawers, inside and out and the runners. It nourishes old, dry wood and is has a citrus scent that helps with the odor of older wood. Happy to have a new creator to watch. 😊😊 Cheers from the Finger Lakes of New York, USA 🍷 🍷
thank you for the kind words 😀. I to use Howards feed n’ wax, must not have shown it in this video as trying to keep the length down, but as you say it does the trick on drawers 👍
I don't see anything amazing about it. Just lot's of glue. This is not restoration at all!!!
@@tonyspeedy2837 Opinions are just like @$$^*[
So many people label their transformation video’s restoration. It makes it confusing for people who don’t know the difference and I guess don’t know the definition of the word restore.
@@deanneparis8888 I thank You for agreeing with me! To restore something is completely different than this video. I can glue together anything but it would not be "restored".
Awesome !! I LOVE that you DID NOT throw some awful paint on them!! They are beautiful!!
Thank you! 😊
Me as well!
I llike that you kept the spirit of the piece. It looks brand new! Job well done.
thank you, that was always the plan 😀
They’re beautiful!
I'm happy to see your beautifull work and the silence but text to explain ❤❤❤, watching from Belgium, happy to found the channel
Thank you so much!
They are beautiful and yes, dahling, those gloves! They're all the rage in Paris!! 💖
thank you 😊
I like sanding.. its satisfying.
Very classy result. Neat that there’s a pair like that.
Thank you! Cheers!
That's some lovely old tiger oak, very nicely restored.
thank you 😊
Just needs less colour next time
Really good job and love the ‘’ get on with it ‘’ rather then all the chat.. look forward to see more of your work
Awesome, thank you!
They look great. Lovely.
thank you 😁
Amazing result!
Thank you!
Fabulous work on pieces that will stand the test of time. I was hoping for a lighter stain with a less shiny finish, but they look rich this way.
Thank you 😀
If he went lighter it wouldn’t be a Restoration. Would it? I think the word for that is modernization?
Excellent !!!!!
Many thanks!!
Great makeover you did good .
Thank you! 🤗
Beautiful work.
Thank you so much 😀
outstanding high quality work! thanks for sharing..
My pleasure!
Lovely sympathetic restoration. They look stunning..
Many thanks!
This video is showing us a moderate repair job. I would suggest removal of all old glue before applying any new glue. Most glues do not adhere to other glues, even the identical type. Some gal has a channel similar to this called John's furniture repair or sorta like that, if you want to see restoration. Wooden it be nice is another place but the epitome is Tom Johnson in Gorham Maine...jsyk......
Totally agree
You did an excellent job sir.
thank you 😊
Beautiful job!!!😊
Thank you! 😊
Lovely!
thanks
Beautifully done!
Thank you very much!
Beautiful!
Absolutely love these! Beautiful work!
Thank you so much 😀
Beautiful 😊

1. The gloves are awesome! Just before you asked the question, I was sitting here thinking, “Ooh, sexy!” Haha
2. Sanding sucks!
3. Great work!
4. Nice tats.
5. I think it’s time to mow the yard.
thanks 😀
Great job. Professional results
Thank you!
Well done, very nice. Helpful to try it myself. I think I would choose a lighter colour.
Thank you 😀
Beautiful.😊

Thank you so much!
Lovely.
Nice job, mate!
Thanks!
Beautiful good job!!!
Thank you! 😊
These turned out beautiful and SO happy the original art nouveau hardware was retained...I'm not a fan of dark wood as I think it looks much better it's original colour and sealed with a transparent finish but other than that I appreciate the transformation !! thank you
thanks ☺️
Awesome job well done fellow restoration guy by trade Antique and Vintage furniture

Would love to own these, beautiful finish.
Many thanks!
Just Beautiful. Good job 👏
Thank you! 😊
I’ve got the same one at mum’s place, maybe I’ll give it a try to make it look better after watching your restoration.
yes give it a go 😀
Отличная работа! Выполнено профессионально.Цвет мне нравится.Удачи вам,мастер!
thanks 😊
Hi Gary. How about talking to us to explain what, how and why you’re doing things? Would appreciate it!
hi, thanks for the feedback it’s always welcome 👍, I’m learning as I go as new to TH-cam so might be something I’ll consider when I get more confident/competent filming etc 😊
brilliant job, they looked lovely when you'd finished!
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful beautiful beautiful...........I would have had the hardware dark, black. But that's just my opinion. Great job. .....p.s.. how's the weather. We're burning up.
thanks you, glad you like it 😀 it’s typical British summer here, not particularly warm and rainy, hope it’s not too extreme where you are?
Beautiful job. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! 😊
Wow these are absolutely beautiful. Amazing job. And loved your video and tattoos.
Thank you so much 🤗
I’m a new sub - I love your gloves 🧤 they go well with your Tat’s. I really love those hand made dovetails - my Brother used to make them for his furniture creations. Sanding is tiresome - but you can meditate during most of it … so that’s a positive 😉. Really beautiful Restoration! I have one of these same era, big serpentine Dressers. It has an old but very fancy wood framed mirror & wooden Wheels. I think the holes on these two dressers you have were for mirror attachment’s ? Thanks for sharing & btw, I like your quips! You’re funny! ❤ & Blessings
thanks for the lovely comments, so pleased you enjoyed it 😀Yes you’re right, those holes were for a mirror 👍
Love, these video’s please keep ‘‘em coming!
Will do! 👍
This was a lovely revival of these old girls! Those original gorgeous brass chandelier pulls are perfect.
If I may make a suggestion, since the pulls were solid brass, you may have been able to polish them up with Barkeepers Friend and Brasso!
thanks, glad you liked them 😀 Unfortunately they weren’t solid brass, polishing them up would always be my first option if possible
Gorgeous! Thanks so much for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Love the dark wood! ❤❤❤❤❤ And your gloves are quite a fetching shade of green lol!!
thanks, I do love those gloves 😀
Beautiful. You did an excellent job. I’ve never seen that type of stain. Is it penetrating or does it stay on the surface?
thanks 😀. It’s a penetrating oil based stain, I like the finish I get using them
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
🇨🇦👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
You did all that work to take it back to the original color?? It is rich looking.
the original finish had failed and needed to be refinished, glad you liked the outcome 😀
Absolutely gorgeous! Beautiful wood and awesome job! 😊
Thank you so much 😀
Gorgeous 😊
Thank you! 😊
Well done!! I just uploaded my latest refinishing video and working on my next 👍🏻😀
thanks, I’ll check it out😀
Got to the point where you’ve asked the question about sanding 😂 My answer is yes! I do. Hate stripping, by the way:)
I like the end result but not the process, it’s very satisfying once it’s done 😀
On those old shellac/varnish antiques using methyl hydrate will preserve the patina of the wood and remove most of the finish.
that’s great advice thanks, I’ll have to give that a try
@@GM_Design I love your results they look great.
Precioso!!!
thank you
👍
Is that Tiger wood veneer? Also, you know you watch too many of these types of videos that you now think you recognize types of veneer!! Lovely restoration!!!
thanks, glad you like it. Yes you can call it tiger oak, it’s the Medullary rays which cause those lovely stripes
hey mate great work love what you are doing. Please tell me whats that purple liquid you put on to clean stuff and to what you call. "sneak Peek" for the finishing potential.
thank you 😀 the purple liquid is methylated spirits or denatured alcohol, depends where you are as to what you call it
What kind of wood glue were you using with the syringe? I’ve tried that with Titebond original and Titebond 3 but they are too thick.
Nice work!✅👍🏻
Thanks, glad you liked it. That was titebond 3
Beautiful job! What is that bit called to make those plugs? You did such a great job blending those in! Thank you for not painting these. New subscriber.
Thank you! it’s just called a plug cutter, you can get a set, drill bit and matching plug cutter, then you know they will fit perfectly 😀
Nice job. Why did u use the tint pens after the first coat of lacquer and not before it?
thanks, glad you liked it 😀 Once you’ve applied a coat of finish you have a better idea what the final colour will be, as the finish will always change it a bit, so makes it easier to match/blend
@@GM_Design Oh, I never thought of that. Thanks.
Is that Tiger Oak ? Yes your gloves are fletching , yes you are weird for the duck tails but that's okay because we all have weird things we like , question is that Walker Texas Ranger theme in the background?
hi, yes that is tiger oak, I do love those medullary rays. I don’t believe it’s the theme tune, just a song I liked 😀
@@GM_Design Oh oops my bad, it just reminded me of that show, I'm looking forward to your next videos
So glad you didn't paint that fine wood!
💜
Did you do anything to the back, bottom and interior that you choose not to put in your video?
I do give them a tidy up and fix any repairs if required, these were in surprisingly good condition so there wasn’t much to show
What is the purple liquid you’re putting on after the stripper? And yes nice gloves 😂
it’s methylated spirits or Denatured alcohol, depending on where in the world you are, used to deactivate and clean up the stripper. Thanks 😀
Oh I see. We here in Southern California call it mineral spirits but it’s not colored.
further to my comment the methyl hydrate will mean less sanding.
All that work just to make it dark again frustrated me
As dark wood isn’t so fashionable why did you make them even darker than they were? True restoration would be to let the oak breath and speak for itself….leave it closer to its original natural colour.
Please talk in these videos
thanks for the comment, it’s a work in progress so always looking to improve
Beautiful!!!
Thank you!!
