In today's episode, we'll show you the renovation of an old travel cooker.

Something from history:
It is a symbol of cheap travel in Czech popular culture. It is inherently one of the tramps and holidaymakers who used to cook soup from a bag in the seaside camp by the tent and the sofa furniture. Ironically, however, the portable cooker was created to make life more enjoyable for the richest.
A useful tool was invented in 1849 by French chef Alexis Soyer, who at that time lived in exile in London. According to Victorian customs, the nobility liked to go out for picnics in the countryside without compromising on their comfort requirements. Quite the contrary. It was precisely the contrast between nature and the achievements of civilization that was valued, and so the noble ladies and gentlemen moved almost throughout the kitchen. But even the numerous and fully equipped servants did not provide warm food in the middle of the meadows. There was nothing to cook if you didn't want to work with an open fire like some drifters.
It belongs to every handbag. But how did lipstick come about?
The technically savvy Soyer, therefore, used the principle of an existing kerosene lamp to refine and customize it, resulting in a portable stove, which he called the “magic stove”. Cooking has since known no bounds.
Indeed, the first to test his new invention was the eccentric marquis of Normanba. As the Dutch historian of architecture and culture Thomas A. P. van Leeuwen wrote in the American magazine Cabinet, the venerable nobleman addressed Soyer, saying he would like to cook at the height of the Egyptian pyramids with the help of his invention. More adventurers followed. Balloon Propagator Lieutenant Gale wanted to prepare a snack in the clouds with the help of a cooker, but died during an unsuccessful start before cooking occurred. Captain Horatio Austin packed a few specimens on his expedition to Antarctica.
The idea of the cooker proved so successful that Soyer's version soon began to be improved by various inventors and counted more and more adventurers on their expeditions. Roald Amundsen was equipped with it on his way to the South Pole, Sir Edmund Hillary ascended Mount Everest. The principle, however, remained more than 160 years since the production of the first specimen, essentially the same, only eccentric nobles replaced campers and cauldrons.

Fantastic job, love the brushing on the iron, learn something everyday.
That makes me happy, thank you

This is one of the most beautiful, artistic renovations I've seen. The attention to design detail was much appreciated. And I also appreciated the welding protection! Well done!!

Welding protection in a video is a joke xD

My husbands grandmother cooked on one of these, in her little cottage kitchen in Holland for 50 years of marriage. This was the one thing that I wanted from her when she passed away at 96 many years ago. I treasure it in our home. Oh! the scrumptious meals we ate that came from the humble little stove.

Everyone in the "civilized" world needs one of these. The work you put in this restoration was great. I'm still amazed by the cast iron. 😮😯😲😳. And that it's still around speaks volumes of its initial quality.

What a wonderful restoration, I thoroughly enjoyed watching your work from start to finish, and the dry brushing to bring out the detail was genius. Well done indeed. I loved it.
Thank you very much :) Have a nice day Radek.
My husband and I, in our early 20s found a old rolltop desk in his parents farm garage covered with junk on top so no one saw it for years. It was full of mudd dinners and wasps too. We pulled it out and totally restored it by hand. Used 4 layers of Tongue oil, rubbed into the oak wood by hand. It was a ton of work but looks amazing and will last another 200 yrs easy. My mom had oak antique furniture all over her house back then. Back then everyone went to barn sells or old antique shops and found tons of antiques to buy. Today no one wants antiques but when I grew up in the 1950 and 60s everyone had antiques, usually handed down in the family.
Thank you so much for your story. Have a nice day Veronika and Radek
About nobody wanting antiques these days; I don’t find anything about this statement accurate whatsoever. People these days-at least, in my generation-are very much into older, sturdier & solidly well-built antiques over the junk being made today. They’re just getting harder & harder to come by. And when you do, they’ve been restored &/or thickly painted over in some crazy color scheme that doesn’t match your personal/homes aesthetic at all, & not everyone has the time nor the inclination to refinish furniture to fit their lives. Not to mention, these days, anything that’s solidly built / “antique” can & does fetch an increasingly hefty price. I love antiques & so does pretty much everyone I know.. however, if you’re at least slightly handy, have a bit of spare time on your hands here & there, & know your way around furniture stripper, sanding, wood stain &/or paint... it will indeed be a much easier & more well-rounded endeavor.
I genuinely love to do stuff like that. I’ve refinished every piece of solid wood furniture I’ve ever owned-which has been quite a few-& even a few non-solid pieces if they were ugly or in real need of some kind of tlc. I’ve also stripped, sanded, re-stained (lowers), painted (uppers), & poly’d all 27 solid oak cabinets & 9 drawer-fronts in the kitchen of my previous home. Exhausting, yes... but sooo worth it. I hate cheap cardboard/pressboard furniture, doors, trim, etc. it’s such worthless junk & will never stand the test of time. At 33, I have many pieces that will make great heirlooms for my children to keep/use (maybe refinish, if they wish), & pass down to their children someday. As long as they keep them up & don’t abuse them.. they’ll last for generations. You certainly cannot say the same about 95% of the furniture being manufactured today. SMH. You can still find solid pieces, but they’re extremely (outrageously) expensive, & even then, one cannot rly be 100% sure that you’ll end up getting what the description claimed it was &/or what you paid for... not until you’ve actually received it. Since a lot of it comes from overseas, oftentimes it can only be purchased online & shipped to you... there’s not much in the way of totally avoiding that. 🤷♀️ But I digress.
The idea that nobody these days wants &/or likes antique furniture anymore, is not only 100% inaccurate but absolutely ludicrous.
I guess there’s still some hope for us yet, eh? LOL! ;))
Были времена ... С душой делали весчь! Не только функционал - сама плита вызывает аппетит! ))

Ahh... The days when plastic was still cast iron!
Ha ha ha, you got me with this one and so true at the same time
Yes the only things I was able to save were a few of my cast iron lil bits on the wall in my kitchen an my cast iron cook set... From a fire we suffered a year ago...! ✌🏻💗😊🍀❣️
@@donnakawana God Bless you.
Cast iron is heavy, though. Not great for portable stuff. And belive it or not, there's actually such a thing as "high quality" plastic, that will last as long as iron, and never rust.
Schonees gerete hast du Veronika!!!👍💋❤❤
That is STUNNING work. One of favourite restorations ever. The dry brushing worked so well.
Beautifully well done! Thank you! 🧡
Thank you very much for watching Deena :) Have a nice day Radek
Fantastic restoration 👍
Thans Wayne :)
The amount of detail made my jaw drop. It looks almost Victorian, with the elaborate decorations. Even the red glass had fidgety bits around it! Can you imagine people taking this on outings and how much history it has seen? Some of the cast iron bits could almost be artwork by themselves. It's amazing how the enamel has lasted so well, also. Thank you for keeping it instead of painting over it! And the dog is adorable!
Thank you very much Shawn for the beautiful comment. True, things used to be nicer and better. Sadly, they are not doing today. Nice day Radek.
I was thinking the same thing, it definitely looks like something from the Victorian Era, late 1800's, maybe 1900 at the latest.
Какие же изысканные вещи раньше делали... Не то что современный пластик. Реставратору респект за возвращение жизни старым вещам!

My Dad taught me some machinery for 5 yrs. He had a small business. He drive a truck cross country and I did the machine work. He's good like you are can make anything. He had to tell the farmers to shove off. I ran the screws and buttons for C-clamps,Fluid Lifters, Stainless steel igniters for oil wells... We had screw machines. I restored a lot of his machines, world war 2 machines, lol. He had a huge New Englander I think it held 6 bars. I learned how to to sharpen drill bits, spent many hours making them exact. I had a stop inside diameter that had to be perfect
Thank you for your story Gayle :) Radek

Вот это красотища!!! Браво умельцу
FYI:
Since UV radiation is neither captured nor reproduced in the camera-tv setup, it is impossible that it will hurt your eyes to just look at a video of arc welding or the sun on TV. ... A camera works by gathering visible light and then the television reproduces that capture.
You don't need to block the welding light for our protection my friend.
Great restoration video, thanks for sharing.
Think of the people that suffer of migraine or epilepsy that could be triggered by flashing lights, like the warning on some video games...
It will hurt no more than looking at white text or anything white on the screen since the brightest luminosity can only be as bright as the pixel that gives off the white light.
Yes, as Horst writes. I was asked to do this by people suffering from epilepsy
@@VeradonaRestoration My mistake, thanks for the clarification!
For the epilepsy, I believe it is more a matter of the flashing bright and dark that matters.
Прекрасная работа и замечательная вещица, и кстати, очень актуально! 😌

Stunning piece! Great job! I love that everything from “back then” was made beautiful and with such quality craftsmanship that all these years later it could be restored. Now it seems that everything is made to eventually throw away instead of using for decades.

This was really satisfying to watch. And from a fellow welder, thank you for covering up when you're actually welding it was easier on the eyes. And I didn't have to feel like I automatically had to close my eyes to protect them.
Thanks 😉🙂❤🇨🇿
You don't have to close your eyes. You are not looking at an arc, it can only be as bright as your monitors back light, and that's only going to happen if you have your brightness set to maximum... You are not looking at a real electrical arc, you are looking at a representation of one.
Beautiful work!! Unfortunately, now, there's no way in HELL I would take that out camping. This is now a showpiece! :)
Yes :( Thank you . Radek
This is not the sort of stove one takes camping. Ones Servant takes it along, together with the requisite ingredients and tableware, when one goes Grouse Shooting, Fly Fishing or engages in some other Country Pursuit. :)
Your information about the history of this type of cooker is very welcome! Although we weren’t wealthy picnic goers or adventurers, my parents and I camped and cooked over Coleman Kerosene (white gas) stoves which take their concept from this, for over twenty years. Now I camp using a Propane stove that really isn’t different except for the fuel. Thank you for bringing this back to life!
Thank you for your story Wanda :) Radek
Nice job. You should try Zeebright some time on cast metal, it is great for polishing cast iron that comes in contact with heat, like grates, stove tops etc, it is easy to use, leaves a great finish, 100% heat proof, and no nasty fumes.
Thanks for this! I have a humidifier I inherited with our woodstove that is in rough shape.
In the UK we knew the product as ZEBO. Generally called black lead polish it's actually graphite.
If you apply it it with a rag and leave it, it is a matt black but you can use a brush similar to a shoe polishing brush and buff it up. If you Polish it up it takes on a stone grey shine.
You filled the stove with alcohol. I have an old East German meths (alcohol) stove but that vapourises the fuel. All wick stoves that I have come across are kerosene.
Прелесть! Это очень благородное хобби! Спасибо за удовольствие у экрана!

John Chrysostom Rev 3:9 I wondered about that. I don’t know old from new but this just did not look right. There were parts that did not have the solid look of something old. Additionally I thought that it would have some type of brand marking. All in all though it was beautiful work.
Nah, this is definitely original. The enamel, the detailing of the cast iron parts, Art Nouveau look, this screams Austria-Hungary.

Makes you wonder how far we as a species have really come. This amazingly beautiful items made in an age of no mass production, made to last, by skilled craftsmen who spent years learning thier trade. Now a days, we have to buy a new washing machine every 2 years as its cheaper to buy a new one than repair it.
Yes, I totally agree. It is sad.
Yea and guys like this are a dying breed since the things built today are not even going to be worth restoring by the time they get to the age these antiques are because nothing today is built to last and in fact is purposefully built to fail!
That's true to a point, but even this was made from a collection of stampings and pressings, it's unlikely that a single craftsman made this in his shop, it was probably made in a factory just like camping stoves are today.
And at that it wasn't cheap, this had to be pretty high end. Normal people wouldn't have bought this beautiful stove.
@@JeffDeWitt No clue where you see signs of press or stamp anywhere on this stove? All I see are clear indications of being cast!
