Where do I begin with this one.... Absolutely giant piece of furniture and the most money I have ever spent on a project! Took over a week to restore but the results are absolutely amazing !

I’m in the civil engineering/land surveying field and we call those plan cabinets and kept our large scale maps in the drawers. You did a beautiful restoration on that cabinet!
Cool, thanks for the info 😉
I live in Australia and way back in the 70s I worked in a drafting office and we called them plan cabinets, too.
Absolutely beautiful, good choice to keep this piece!
Thank you for speaking my mind.. Everything you said is me and my thoughts. I'm also in the same industry.
As incredible as it may seem, this type of furniture is also widely used in museums. At the Bahia Clothing Museum (Brazil), the pieces from the technical reserve are kept in furniture similar to this one. I remember when I saw a set of stoles and cassocks from the 18th century preserved in the collection, and to be stored they are placed in drawers of that style so that there are no creases or fold marks on the pieces.
That was a MONSTER project! I love the cherry veneer and the contrasting colors on the drawers! It came out beautifully! The cats definitely earned their snacks on this one. They are wonderful supervisors!!!
Thank you 😊
THATS THE ONE! Absolute perfection. I’ve always known these to be called ‘plan chests’ and in the 70s and 80s every architect, art studio, ad agency etc… had them. They are worth an absolute fortune so whatever you spent on the restoration was worth it. So incredibly beautiful. I’m very jealous.
Thank you ;-)
Absolutely! And when you see what kind of garbage they are selling for $1,200 it's obvious that this is worth a fortune.
Amazing work, as usual. I really like your choice of not staining the drawers dark. The contrast makes a huge difference and is visually appealing.
Thank you so much 😀
What a transformation! It’s no wonder that you want to keep it, its gorgeous

Absolutely beautiful, Jay 😍 While watching this I realized one of the main reasons I enjoy your videos so much is due to the pride that you take in what you do! You never rush through a project just to have it finished and that shows in your workmanship! Looking forward to what’s next!!🤩
@kristiclifton3974 *I couldn't have complimented Jay better myself!😉*
Awesome, thank you ;-)
@@Flippingdrawers *My pleasure, Jay‼️*
These units are also called flat files, and I use them for unframed artwork, mat board, and anything else that is better flat than standing. I love your color choices and attention to detail ... and the drawer pulls. Everything works together perfectly. 👍
Yep. I worked at Print shop and we called these flat files. We put proofing materials and old proofs in there. Still use them, but they are metal.
Yes, they are flat files. A company I used to work for sold these. Most that we sold were metal and not wood based.
I love it! I would also like to say that you are enjoying the best of both worlds, having the cats to pet and spoil, but no vet bills of kitty boxes to clean! Well done.
Love the contrast of case and drawers and the drawer pulls make it perfect
I find that when I need a break from this world and all the craziness, I come here, your work and your voice are soothing, and I love the cats.
Cherry veneer with plum stain turned out quite lovely. The hardware makes it sing!
WELL DONE!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Amazing transformation!! You did an awesome job!! 👏👏 I think you made the right decision to not stain the drawers. $650 is a steal for an architect’s cabinet! I’ve been wanting one for years and can’t find one that is made this well for an affordable price.
It turned out to be a very handsome piece of furniture! Personally, I like the mahogany and the contrasting drawers.
You know, it still amazes me on your QUALITY - WORKMANSHIP! Makes me so proud to watch an artisan at work! Luv ya work! People should watch this for those tips you gave. 🐱🐱🐱🐱🐱🐱🐱
Wow, thank you! you are very kind 🧡
You turned it into a silk purse!
Its enormous!!! I dont know what you plan to use it for but it IS beautiful! I love how you used the various colors of wood to their benefit to make the piece a definate stand out! Its gorgeous!
I absolutely love the contrasting wood colors. It turned out so beautiful. Who wouldn’t love to have that piece in their home. Job well done as always!
Another stunning piece! You always find the most interesting things to turn around. The shades of stained wood are beautiful. Keep doing you ❤️
I appreciate how the darker stain visibly reduces the size of the piece. It’s stunning.
That was an expensive redo... but it also looks like an expensive piece now. Love it. I enjoy the 2 tone look, and the plum mahogany is my favorite color. Another fabulous job done!!!!😊❤
The contrast in color is gorgeous. You most definitely should keep this piece after all the work you put into it. What a lovely piece of furniture it is now.
This is my favourite project that you have done so far. I love the contrast between the stained cabinet and the natural drawer fronts.
That is a planners blueprint drawer. My grandfather at one time at work had one! If this is for you, then make it like you want!
You did it! I knew you could. It’s absolutely stunning. Enjoy it. Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to your next video.😊
There have been and still a number of different fields that use this storage cabinets. Their (non-field biased) name is Flat Files.
That gold line just made the piece. Amazing how such a small detail makes such a big impact.
I love the contrast between them! I visited many artist's schools and almost all of them had these. I guess they're convenient to store new paper and students' finished work :D
I don't blame you for wanting to keep this piece! It's great!
That will be fabulous for storing.. whatever you want! Love it!
I can't wait to see how it comes out!
Without a doubt you have one of the most incredible workshops and equipment I have ever seen. Amazing how much time you spend revitalizing a dead piece of furniture into something unique and one of a kind. Love your videos!
Thank you 🤩
Great result, the contrasting colours are really pretty! This probably would have been an even greater pain in the peach if the base was in one piece. These kind of cabinets would also have been used in museums to store artworks on paper.
As a retired librarian I knew such a piece as map drawers. In the reference department of the main branch of our city library I consulted the maps stored in ours. We also had similar drawers in the art department of my university to store large sheets of expensive print paper.
I coveted such a set for my own use but even second hand the price is prohibitive. Your find was a prize and you've made it a treasure. It looks gorgeous and despite the humble material beneath the veneer it's a valuable and beautiful acquisition. 👍😊
Cool. Thanks for sharing and watching 💛
Thus is beautiful! I love the contrasting drawers!
You did an excellent job as always! I like the finish on the drawers very much. It added interest and make the piece look less massive. Glad you are keeping this one for yourself, you deserve it.
I love that piece. The stain looks beautiful on it. The contrast with the drawers works for me as well. Great job Jay!
I absolutely love the end result, all the right choices made to turn dreary into stunning. Well done Jay.
Thank you
Jay, that is magnificent! Absolutely love the contrast, and that hardware is amazing. Great job!
I always wanted one of those pieces. There's something about it that always catches you eye. Great job. Love the transformation.
I'm an architect. One of the most common sizes for drawings in the US is 36 x 48 inches. That requires big drawers exactly like the drawers you have here. One office I worked in had a special 36 x 60 inch drawer for a special project that was long and narrow, requiring a 60 inch sheet size.
What an absolutely amazing project to take on , not only for its size, damage & removing hardware but difficult materials used. The colour choice is YOURS as its going in YOUR house , which I think must be like the Tardis judging by all the pieces you keep😂, so it's not up to anyone else to comment.
I did laugh out loud when you said it was Plum stain on Cherry veneer, what other fruit stain where you going to use on the draws 😅😂
Was really enjoyable to watch.
Thanks for sharing. Sending my coffee ❤
🍑?😂 Thank you ! much appreciated
Yes...and he did a 'Peach' of a job.
In a million years I would not have seen your vision for this piece but it is stunning. And the 'Tommy thumb' nail pic to demonstrate the size was hilarious! Every time you amaze and delight!
I love the final results!!! Great job!!!!
You always seem to find such interesting pieces of furniture! You must have a wonderful eye for it!
Wow! What a transformation! The outcome is stunning! The cherry veneer is lovely!
That is so beautiful. I love the way the drawers turned out.
Beautiful result! I support your choices on the stain colors; the contrast of the drawers to the exterior is brilliant. Well done.
I am a draftsman and have use file cabinets like this for many years. This was an amazing transformation. Excellent work!
Awesome! Thank you!
It turned out absolutely gorgeous! I love the color combination. A ton of work but so worth it. Great job, Jay!
Beautiful transformation as always, I love the contrasting drawers!
The dark stain is perfection. I can see why you wanted to keep this. Excellent job!
I think you made the right choice not staining the drawers. Beautiful job.
I’m a graphic designer in the US. We call that piece of furniture “flat files”. We used to store printed pieces, printer proofs and art in them before the industry went digital. Love the linear quality and the color blocking!
Really like the redesign and contrast. From plain to cool. AGAIN, the attention to detail shines through. No matter how small or big the project is, that trait is always evident. Well done Sir 👍👏
I am longing for a piece like this, but they are always so expensive and hard to get. Well I wouldn’t have a place for it in my tiny flat anyways right now but those are really amazing
You are the Prince of Two-tone! I love that plum mahogany!
I so appreciate your hard work. Anyone, including you, would have thrown up your hands and said noooo! But you are patient and skilled and it works ! Thank you for so many hours of videoing. 🎉❤
Absolutely gorgeous transformation!
That turned out so beautiful! Good thing since it was expensive to redo! You definitely couldn't buy anything that nice for that price though. Love your videos and always am excited to see you style choices for the finished piece. Great work!😻❤👍
I love when the Project Inspectors show up.
Flipping… fantastic!! I bet there’s architects who would pay thousands for that piece. Sincerely stunning work.
Glad you like it 🧡 thats is very kind, thank you
You not only possess the technical skill but also the design expertise that culminate in the creation of an outstanding piece like this. Remarkable workmanship Sir.
Thank you 🤩
Another stunning transformation! The plum color stain is really quite beautiful!
Wow!! Yet again you’ve turned something ‘normal’ into a thing of beauty!! I love your work!! Thanks for sharing it all with us :)
I'm happy you left the drawer fronts alone, the alternating shades looked great. One thing you didn't tell us, and I am curious to know, was how you plan on using this unit?
Worth every penny you invested in this unique piece!! I just love everything about it!!
Jay, I hope your back is much better now. This piece is huge, you have done an excellent job of bringing it back to life. Natalie😊
Thank you very much!
I bet the previous owner would not recognize this piece. Great job.
You did an amazing job and I love your choice of plum stain for the frame and keeping the drawer fronts up stained. A lot of work but the end result is stunning.
Absolutely gorgeous well done I totally love your choice of stain and decision to leave the drawer s natural!!
Beautiful result! I agree that the drawers didn’t need the stain. What an amazing contrast!
I think you made the right choice by staining the drawers a lighter color. The contrast made this piece really pop!
Absolutely beautiful! I love what you did with the drawers. It was a good decision.
A modern work of art. Wonderful.
You completely transformed it, love how it turned out 🔝
… and, for the record, your choice of stain … and lack of stain was a great success.
The 2 tone look is fantastic! Alternating the drawer tone is beautiful. It looks so rich! Any design firm would love to have that in their office space!
What a huge job! It looks beautiful. Love the stain color, and the drawers being natural. Great job.
Stunning, a pleasure to watch this transformation.
Love love love it! I think this is one of your best restorations to date!
Absolutely gorgeous! I would kill for one of these for my sample boards....but no way I would get it up the stairs to my studio! LOL. Brilliant job, Jay!
The peach was hilarious. And wow! This is amazing! Huge job. Kudos!! ❤
😉 thank you
Wow, this tramsformation is so beautiful. I like the color of stain you chose. The drawer fronts are a lovely contrast to the rich dark stain. The choice of drawer pulls is very elegant. All of your hard work has paid off. Thank you for sharing it all with us.
Thanks so much! 😊
Really nifty drawer handles. I sometimes have issues with handles that aren’t finger-friendly and these clearly pass! You have good judgment on the finishes and this turned out perfectly stunning.
I yearn for this cabinet! I've wanted an architect chest for a long time, for all my dress-making pattern pieces, and I keep my eye on selling sites. But seeing one fully restored and stylishly finished like this... wow! No wonder you wanted to keep it!
I love that stain! And I love that you left the drawers with no stain! Great as usual!
This is stunning! It was certainly a beast! Absolutely beautiful job well done. Love the cherry as well as your color choices. Enjoy your new furniture!
This is truly beautiful! I once worked for an engineering company and indeed, this is for map storage. You made it more incredible than the original. Enjoy your work of art.
Excellent choice of not staining the drawers. The contrast is beautiful.
Fantastic work! This is a beautiful piece of furniture!
Great! I love it! Such a demanding work! Bravo!
The gilding wax was the perfect application. What tenacity you have. Love it❤
Plum mahogany's the PERFECT choice especially with the cherry veneer! Absolutely brilliant restoration!
That was an amazing transformation, a great place for storing your venire pieces and so much more.
Absolutely beautiful! I love the results! ❤
Can’t say it enough…I love it! Everything about this project said don’t do it but you went ahead and did it anyway. Hats off to you it was worth it ❤ hope it fit inside your home. What will you store in it? I am a map lover. Now you can spend your retirement collecting maps!😊
😂 or store the precious veneer it it lol I will use it as a TV stand with storage
the final result is GORGEOUS. i love the decision to not stain the drawers! it adds so much contrast.
Jay, I love to watch you work. I hope you are aware that, in addition to being a skilled craftsman, you are also an excellent video editor! I really do not like watching live shows (that goes for everything) and I did try to watch this live. I couldn’t hack it. This edited version, however, is imminently watchable. Great work, all around!
Thank you ;-) I do spend a lot of time editing .
Beautiful work, I agree with you, the draws look great. You always make such a brilliant transformation of each piece of furniture you work on.
😍
Love the stain!
Love you didn't stain the drawers!
Love the new hardware!
Beautiful piece!
Absolutely stunning transformation. It is now a very handsome piece of furniture.
I love the color choices. As always a wonderful job!
I love this project! When you inserted the drawers, I KNEW that you were going to leave them unstained and I LOVE them that way! I'm curious though... what do you plan to store in this set of drawers? Where will you put it? Certainly not in your workshop. Thanks for another great, entertaining video!
Thank you , it will be a TV stand with storage for my clothes
Totally agree with you about not staining the drawers. That was my first thought when you put the naked drawers in first. As usual a precise and perfect job. I wish I had a set of drawers like this to store art paper!
Wow that turned out gorgeous. Love the plum mahogany stain. The drawers just add to the overall look ❤.
Fantastic job, Jay! It really is gorgeous. You have so much commitment to a project, it's inspiring. ♥
Thank you so much!
