  • really didn't want to come out like this but I'm just so sick of all these new cars literally not making 100 000 miles anymore. Whether they're designed to fail or not remains the real question. How can you make a vehicle so good and give it lackluster reliability so unfortunate and I still can't process it fully. I really want to just keep driving it after it's fixed but maybe I got a 🍋 and it's best to part ways...
    Hopefully this isn't a trend with this new 2.0 turbo from Honda/Acura

    I stuck with a 9th gen Accord. V6. No turbo charging. No small engine. No cvt. Voila!!! Just a NO BS powertrain. Honda is building junk nowadays. I hate to say it but it’s true. They are actually rated worse than NISSAN now. I checked on consumer reports and car complaints for issues.

    As to the engine, I have always found that Honda/Acura engines seem to be a little more 'high strung'. Smaller displacement with more power than the competition. They seem to be reliable but maybe you just got a bad gasket. I have had all 4 tire pressure sensors go, one at a time, at about 2 months between failures. Turbo DI engines (all of them of all brands) are prone to detonation at low revs when the trans has gone to a higher gear and revs are 1500 or lower for mpg and then you push down to speed up but not so hard as to get a downshift to lower gear. The severe pressure spike of the detonation causes something like an earthquake where a shockwave for an instant distorts cylinder wall and affects the top surface of block. The head to block seal is the head gasket. When the blocks walks on gasket and then returns it causes stress and wear and even displacememt of the sealant on the metal layers of the head gasket. Some drivers in some terrain will not have problems as they drive with heavier foot or there are no slight hills to climb. If you ever drove a manual trans vehicle and you slowed and then moved off again w/o downshifting and you heard a knock or rattle for a bit until vehicle gained speed, you were experiencing the low speed detonation. Never saw the problem on cast iron block engines, only aluminum. It happened before direct injection but much less. The same thing can cause vertical crack in cylinder in some engines. My opinion from 50 years of car fixing biz.

    • @BCars_Garage
      @BCars_Garage  9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I was deffinitly guilty of that with this car. Constantly on the turbo at low low rpms instead of it downshifting like you said however I never experienced any sort of detonation atleast not that I noticed. I know the feeling in the old cars which is very pronounced when you have pinging or breakup from mismanaged spark/timing or fuel delivery. I would add if this is a common problem with new turbo cars you think the manufacturer would have a good tune in the vehicle instead of relying on the knock sensors and computer to play catchup

    Turbo cars, you have to let them idle for a bit before you shut them off, if you shut if off right away especially if you were driving fast the turbos wont cool down right spelling disaster for your engine.

    • @clutch7366
      @clutch7366 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You are correct.
      In the owners manual of my CX-50 Turbo, it clearly states that if we park the car after highway driving, we must let the engine idle for a minimum of 30 seconds before shutting it off (this period of time is a good time to put your sunglasses away, grab your wallet and other belongings, etc., before shutting engine off). Heck, sometimes after a really long commute (50+ miles) on a hot day when I drive my car hard, I will pop the hood when I get home and check on some of the fluids while the engine runs. I’ll let it idle with the hood open for up to five mins before shutting her off. In the meantime I just get my lunchbox and other items out of the car.
      People would have less car problems if they cared more about maintenance and paid more attention to fixing their bad habits.
      The manual also states that upon cold startup, we should wait for the engine RPMs to fall to normal idle before driving away, because all the engine oil drained down into the pan and needs time to build pressure back up and circulate again. All of the time, I hear people cold start their cars, and one second later they’re already driving away; I can’t help but think of the extra wear on their cylinders, pistons/rings, crank journals, bearings, etc.

    • @BCars_Garage

      Some very basic things would help make an engine last a long time. I always let everything warm up and idle at regular rpm before moving any vehicle even if it's just in the yard. Even in 80 or 90 degree heat your engine and trans are still cold

    This is a prime example of why auto manufacturers should not use forced induction on small engines to just perform and out perform their bigger displacement engines of the past. To some degree they have accomplished the performance aspect; however, they’re showing not being up to the task as far as longevity. These engines are under extreme stress. I am noticing a trend. Turbo engines of the past did not fail as early as these newer turbo charged engines. So what changed? The only thing I’ve noticed that changed in turbo engines is the demand to produce peak torque at low RPM (1300, 1600, 1700, etc). The turbo engines of the past can be problematic but they were not failing under 100,000 miles with proper care.
    No thanks. I will keep my 5.0.

      Old turbos barely made 8 lbs the rdx is 20.5 but many approaching 27+ out of a small turbo which creates immense heat and detonation issues if using poor fuel. Also they arrive at that massive rpm torque figure in order to get good mpg as per epa standards many including the rdx use an electronic waste gate getting full boost at low rpma and then tapering off in the upper rev range

    Swap that crap motor into the old school J-serie 3.5L motor.

    Honda/Acura are not good cars anymore. They're complete gabage nowadays. After this, I would stay away from all of them.

      It feels so wrong to say that but this might be the last Honda/Acura powered vehicle in my stable for a while. Atleast when it comes to new ones. You can make a vehicle as nice and luxurious as you want but the engine and trans are the heartbeat and soul of any car.

      @BCars_Garage Honda has gone the way of Boeing. The ‘Boeing Factor’ has taken over and Quality Control has been replaced with Quantity Control. Slap it together and ship it out!

      @GBraidi78 that I could probably agree with. I have heard some complaints about some Toyota's and Lexus vehicles as well, so you still have to be careful and know what you're buying.

    I thought the head gasket issue was related to the 1.5T’s. I am Still waiting to hear back about the defective fuel pumps after being informed about their unavailability. And then there is a MAJOR defect with the 3.5 J’s. Hard to believe they screwed up the crankshaft journals using CNC’s. Do they Not have Inspectors checking the specs/tolerances? The Boeing Factor has taken over at Honda - it is now Quantity Control! Also warped rotors, low quality exhaust systems, defective body welds and many, many….. other problems.

      There's starting to be enough of these rdx's out there with higher mileage so if this is an ongoing issue it will become apparent fairly quickly

      @BCars_Garage Pardon me, I should have mentioned that I am dealing with a 2019 Pilot. Pretty much the same, but could be different lots or batches of parts that are affected.

      @BCars_Garage My ‘possible’ problem is ‘TBD’. Now that Honda is dealing with 500K fuel pump replacements, the engine issue is probably sidelined. A Neighbor had the engine on his Acura crap out. He junked it! If he knew he may have had a bogus engine, he could have had it replaced. Not a Happy Honda Owner for sure.

    That’s why I’m trading in my 2013 TL for an MDX and not an RDX. I don’t like the idea of a turbo 4-banger, I’d rather have the bullet-proof V-6 like in my TL.
