Acura RDX review after 65000 miles of daily use. Is the newest iteration Good or Bad?

- this long term review consists of my personal 2019 acura rdx I purchased when it was only 1 year old with very low miles. Sure it's had some problems but is it worth it? or should you keep looking?

So true about the touch pad.. once you get use to it.. set it and forget, i wonder how many times people keep touching their's. I hate finger prints on a touchscreen
Deffinitly a spot that gets dirty, I think touch screens are something many people don't clean.
Bought this car from Copart recently and shipped to UA, 2019 Advance trim. Love this car, unfortunatelly no auto-folding mirrors in the US version
There's some options I'm surprised they didn't cone with. That and the lack of heated rear seats was a surprise to me
I just bought one from IAA looking forward to driving it
@@BCars_Garagethe 2022 aspec advanced has the rear headed seats and auto folding mirrors, I bought one recently.
@dalejrfanforever8 heated rear seats are great
I have a 2019 RDX A-Spec - about 100,000 km (62,000 mi).
Good review! One observation - the drive button that switches between "D" and "S" - it seems you're not aware that "S" mode works with the paddle shifters, so it doesn't upshift until you get to the higher RPM range as it's expecting you to do so
My observations after 6 years with this car:
Love:
- one of the nicest looking SUVs, especially with the red leather seats
- super comfortable, even driving long distances. Heated AND cooled seats
- reliable for the most part... I did have a broken rear window but I assumed it was vandalism as it was a giant hole in the middle as if someone had taken a hammer to it (dealer replaced it under warranty); also recently I started getting water leaking into the cabin which caused the electronics to go haywire - turns out it was blocked sunroof drainage tubes - which can't be cleared out and need to be replaced - cost $2,000 and it wasn't covered by my extended warranty (I've got a complaint filed with Acura and it sounds like they might compensate me - stay tuned). (Dealer said this is an acknowledged design flaw.)
- remote starter - using my key fob - range is several blocks!
- regular maintenance cost is reasonable
- car auto locks after you walk away from the car
Not crazy about:
- the touch pad for the entertainment system - the issue here is it was designed for the built-in menu/apps, but I almost exclusively use Apple CarPlay (maps, Spotify, texting) and the touchpad requires you to "tab" from one area of the screen to the next - you can't just reach out and touch the button you want. Having said that, I rented a car with a touch screen and I found it awkward to aim my finger at what I wanted to touch which is distracting, so maybe it's not so bad after all...
- the built in navigation system is not very good (I don't use it - see above); and the voice commands for the overall system are very limited (why can't I use it to set the cabin temperature?)
- the drive selector - seems every mode - park, reverse, drive - requires a different kind of hand movement which is very confusing at first. But you do get used to it
- the side view mirrors tend to get stuck when it's very cold (won't fold out - need to force them manually)
- requires premium (actually it drives ok on regular but why buy a car like this and stifle its performance?)
- I expected better gas mileage - under optimum conditions - long, steady highway - I've gotten 8L/100km (29.4 MPG) which is good but in mixed city/highway it's more like 11 (21.4 MPG) or 12 (19.6).
- with remote start, there's no way to program what you want the cabin temperature to be (winter or summer)
Hate:
- the AcuraLink app is useless - they expect you to pay a yearly subscription (although the first year is free) to use it - for even simple things like checking your fuel and oil level
Overall, I'd say I'd buy another. Especially if they eventually offer a hybrid version.
@fredcaprilli220 the sunroof issue should be covered im surprised yours wasn't to begin with. The way everything else is going I think we see the next Gen RDX come with hybrid option and hopefully the A Spec will be more than just aesthetics. I'd like it to have better brakes and more hp
Great mention about 91 or better octane. Yes, this vehicle requires premium unlike what the gas cap states.
With just a touch over 20 lbs of boost I think it's absolutely insane to run 87. Yes the computer will pull some timing to accommodate the lower octane fuel but it's not worth the risk.
Running on regular fuel for 90k kms. No issue.
It's not required It's recommended
Glad I found this video. I’m in Canada and planning to buy a used RDX from 2019-20-21 model years. I was told that 2019-20 has some issues as it was redesigned. 2021 was better and 2022 and later will be the best one to buy. Do you think buying a 2020-21 has some serious issues that’s expensive to fix? I think it being a higher Honda, shouldn’t be that expensive. And other than regular oil changes what else do you need to keep it running fine?
It's been virtually trouble free for me. They always say not to buy the first year of a redesign just incase it has issues. I think as long as you do the basics regular oil changes, air filter etc you'll get many trouble free miles imo. If you get a 20 to 21 you'll have lots of warranty left just incase anything expensive happens. Most parts aren't that expensive on these but it's the electronics that usually have issues with all the newer vehicles these days.
@@BCars_Garage Have you ever smelt oil or gas in your cabin? If yes how did you go about it? Is it oil leak or broken gasket or something else? I recently bought a CPO 2020 RDX ASpec in Ontario, Canada and I am smelling oil/gas sometimes when I accelerate hard or sometimes even while driving normally.
@SameepDalal I'd be hitting the dealership with that one that sounds to me like a leak of some sort as you should never smell oil or gas inside a newer vehicle. There's several things that could cause this. Any check engine lights on the dash?
@@BCars_Garage No Check engine light or anything on the dash. I tried to check for any leaks but there was none. Nothing under the vehicle on the floor or anywhere in the engine bay. I tried checking the oil level and I think It is higher than the top mark but I am no mechanic so I am not sure if I checked it correctly. The engine was warm when I checked, that might be the reason of high oil level.
@SameepDalal engine temp won't affect oil level. It's probably something small with no visual leaks and especially if it isn't throwing any engine codes. Keep an eye on it and see if anything changes.
What do you think of those red dials? I kinda don’t like them. Looks like it’s hard to read, but what do you think?
Also it does pipe in the engine sound unfortunately. To me there isn’t a point in doing it.
I like the red gauges find them easy to read.
@@BCars_Garage Except for when it's sunny - then they're practically impossible to read.
@fredcaprilli220 agreed it was harder to see if it got a glare but nothing too compromising
Nice man im glad your enjoying it. Yeah i drove a MDX at dealership way too big. Actually very quiet for sure. RDX is my car inwanna get. Might go test drive one today. I like rhe 2022 so yeah im getting her used A spec of coures loaded.
@@paulrakis A Spec is a must imo for the interior and exterior black accents looks so good
@BCars_Garage yeah for sure. Just drive a 24 RDX A spec. What a awesome car. Fast and fun to drive. Super smooth. Love the interior 😍 👌 Simple I don't mind rhe touch pad.
@@paulrakis you get used to it pretty quick enjoy!
Got the same spec but in grey and we had our back window pop just like your in our driveway. Dealership wont cover it under defeat and no open recall on that glass yet, which from so many people have similar issue should be a recall.
If there's other dealers in your area maybe try a different one. I was off warranty for it but they said they're aware of the issue sent an email to acura and they agreed to cover the replacement cost. This is a common issue that should be a recall very soon I hope
i got a 2012 lexus rx350 with 85k miles. never gave me issues at all. i bought it used at 69k. i thinking of selling it and upgrading to a 2016/2017 or 2018 rdx. im still thinking about it.
@angelbluerider9588 that's a tough one because that generation of 350 lasts forever. On the other hand same can be said with those years rdx as it has the 3.5 v6
@BCars_Garage yea im debating should i save money and just wait until i put more miles on that rx350.
@angelbluerider9588 85 is still low so just depends if you want to spend the money
@@BCars_Garage im hearing the rdx,s with v6,s better then those new rdx with 4cyl turbo.s
@angelbluerider9588 I'm not sure if you've seen my other videos, but I blew the head gasket at 74k miles on mine. I haven't heard enough of these to think it's a common issue but I can tell you unequivocally the v6 rdx will be more reliable. In the same breath I will also tell you that the 2019+ RDX is light years ahead of the previous generation in every way shape and form.
What do you think of 2019 rdx with 140 k km ll you recommend
@JANITHVLOGGER mine had a bad head gasket at 118km it's a great car, but I'd make sure you have some kind of warranty just in case.
I have a 2019 RDX advanced , the main camera above rear view mirror went out at 17000 miles , cost me $2300.00 to replace. Now I’m at 18000 miles and the suspension is bad , that’s going to cost me maybe $4,000. I’m retired so as you can see I don’t drive a lot . I do love this car but now looking for a new car that won’t have all the bells and whistles for things to go wrong. I’m very sad 😢 I’m looking at 2025 Toyota
@@dianarobertson327 2300 for the rear camera is insane I would've thought 800 or so max. Hopefully the Toyota treats you better
So you have never changed the read diff fluid? 7500 ml change frequency.
Changed twice my understanding is a 30k change frequency though 7500 seems pretty often for a diff
Did you have to pay for the back window?
@spookybenzo836 thankfully no the dealer covered it
Sorry for your octane choice, 2022 and up is 91 octane recommended not required
@samosei8412 it's cheap insurance in my mind. All they did was update the computer and make the knock sensor more sensitive to pull more timing when a lower grade fuel is used. 91+ octane is cheap insurance on any boosted vehicle.
Any sunroof popping when turning into a driveway at an incline?
No however the sunroof seal had to be replaced as that had popped out and wouldn't go back into place. A common issue on these
I noticed it on mine but I never knew where the noise was coming from
Sunroof frame bolts start to come loose causing popping noise. There is a service bulletin out from Acura for this problem.
@@BCars_Garagejust wondering how much that job end up costing you? Did you get any water leakage inside or was it an easy fix?
Thinking about purchasing but worried after seeing car nut’s pano sunroof video lol.
@PAPERandPENCILguy it was covered under warranty thankfully but I would imagine it's a pretty expensive fix though if I had to guess
So u haven't had rear glass issues? Or roof glass creaking?
Nvm lmao
They really need to recall the glass. My girlfriend is like " if that glass breaks while the babies are in there.. 😡"
I'm like, yeaaa but it looks great tho 😅
That's the only real issue I've ever had I was sitting in the car and basically s*** myself when it shattered. The techs at acura were saying the rear window defrost makes a high frequency noise and supposedly that's what breaks the glass. I don't know if that's fact or fiction though
@@BCars_Garage lmao bruh I would also shit myself. I've had it's the defroster as well. But I live in a snow state so that sucks lmao. Acura replaced one warranty?
@rico5527 ya replaced under warranty but a pain to deal with.
Hopefully, you got extended warranty. You don't want to spend $5K on a new turbo when it inevitably fails.
@@AcuraAddicted I did and glad I it as the head gasket went at 74k miles (120km) and it was thankfully covered it was an engine out ordeal so I can't imagine what that would have set me back
Engine out to change a head gasket on a 4 cylinder??
@lebojay I shook my head in disbelief when I saw the engine/trans on the floor. Tech said it was quicker and easier to pop the subframe out and have full access to the everything which makes sense but probably not how I'd go about it of it was me
can i install LPG gad on this car?
@@tgvcfr120 I doubt it
the mode button or "Placebo mode button" is the most stupid gimmick Acura marketing could have invented and invested on. Does nothing for their cars!
Unfortunate because it would only add to the experience if it did
@@BCars_Garage Acura is trying too hard to be like ever other manufacturer. I owned a used Acura legend 1989 LS, of course it had a lot if miles on it and suspension was shot when i drove it. But to the point the car drove smoothly and shifted smoothly. The smooth v6 had a good amount of power, superbly comfortable and well appointed for its time. I finally bought a brand new 2011 MDX base and this car has been excellent, comfortable and reliable. Since it was the base model there sre no gimmick buttons or modes, just a naturally aspirated 6 cylinder engine with 300HP.
@danielmelendez9943 I'm not sure when they made this poor decisions but it's certainly hurting the brand. Also I owned a 92 Acura Legend and absolutely loved that car
