Boxes sound so great because the speed of sound in wood / paper (or cardboard, for that matter) is very similar to that in normal air. So when an object vibrates carboard (wood, paper), the vibration can easily pass on into air, without shockwaves reflecting inside the cardboard. In metal and glass objects, on the other hand, the speed a shockwave (vibration, sound) travels at is much higher, which creates reflections inside the material. That's what makes an oil drum sound the way it does when you hit it. #themoreyouknow
Fun Fact: Yamaha knows this too, which is why the 8-inch cones in your white HS 8 speakers are made of pressed paper (basically a fancy kind of cardboard), too. Don't they sound amazing?

Hat nicht auch die Form ( nur zu einer Seite hin geöffnet ) Einfluss auf den Sound, bzw die Bässe? Wenn ich ne Box in die Ecke stelle, werden ja auch gerade die Bässe verstärkt.
Will damit sagen: wäre die gesamte Pappe in nur einer Fläche vorhanden, klänge es weniger 'Fett', vermute ich mal.
Und zu Deiner Erklärung eine Frage: hat es nicht auch schlichtweg mit der eingesetzten Energie zu tun ? Damit, dass ich ein Stück Pappe/Papier viel einfacher in Schwingung versetzen kann, als eine Tischplatte. . . aber das hat dann wohl eher Einfluss auf die Lautstärke als auf den Sound.

Sound is nothing by vibration on air molecules.
If you have a large surface that reverberates very well, with a large open space, it will produce sound.
A tin or aluminum box with a large open surface would have sounded fantastic. (With crisp highs and smooth bass.)

I have also found that big empty cardboard boxes work really, really well and coolers work decent too . Car hoods are ok-- but tinny sounding. Downspouts\gutters work ok, and metal sheds arent too bad either.

Why does it work? Basic acoustic theory: The body you stick it to vibrates, resonates (basically like the body of an acoustic guitar) and therefore the air inside is set in motion and it creates soundwaves. Depending on the size and form of the object it will sound different (louder, more bass, more high end, etc.)

The reason the cardboard box works so well is because there are three different layers in the cardboard and when the air goes in the box it bounces off the second layer and then the third layer there for ampliphiing the sound. Also the box has four sides for the sound to bounce off of there for giving you that thick bass.

I believe it changes the sound to vibration sequences and when you stick it to something hollow the vibrations transfer to the inside the box and bounce around displacing the sound

Not really dum*b*. This is a travel thing, and you may find yourself a place, where there is no other way to connect to the speakers.
I do not think it will work well. The outer casing of a speaker will most likely be too masive (too much mass per area), and the dome of the speaker unit itself is designed to work with a higher travel.

A Cheap implementation of a concept that has been around for a LONG time. I have a unril that I got in the mid-70's that could turn a 2x4ft celing tile or a section of drywall between studs into a speaker. The surface acts as a speaker cone so the lighter ad stiffer, the better.
