June 27, 1981, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Grover Washington Jr.(ss,as&ts), Richard Tee(key), Ralph MacDonald(perc), Paul Griffin(synth), Eric Gale(g), Anthony Jackson(b), Steve Gadd(ds)
first got into grover wahsington, jr back in early 80's when i left to go to college. i was the only white guy in my dorm that liked jazz. all my schoolmates asked me what i was doing listening to "black" music. i told them: "it's not black or white, man. it's jazz!" love this man's music!
Jazz is jazz. you have to have a fine ear, a sense of rhythm, a sense of vibration, when you understand jazz. Not everybody has the insight. You have to FEEL jazz, within your bones. When you feel it, you know you feel it, and that's it.
The whole album is great. Listened the hell out of it back in the 80s, especially while studying in college. Just looked up concert footage wondering if Marcus Miller toured with him in this video-no, “just” Anthony Jackson! Such incredible musicians.
Grover, Sanborn, Spyro Gyra since the late 70's. And it still works today. This music is forever as far as I am concerned. Was so sad when Grover passed.
It’s part of life dying it’s a date no one is exempt from including you and me and anyone reading this . Ashes to ashes dust to dust … naked I came into the world 🌎 and naked I shall return . Be ready
Saw him live at the variety playhouse in atlanta in 95- best money I ever spent. we waited out front to get in and he greeted fans at the door as only he could. His loss was painful yet the sound lives on.
I'm an old lady but I wasn't always that way. Once I was forty something and fell in love with a wonderful man. We ran away together around the time we'd discovered Grover and boy, did we groove to him. Sadly the big love of my life passed on. But there's no law against playing Winelight and remembering.
When Grover plays he enters in another world. That's certainly for that reason people feel goosebump when they hear him. He was so true and generous. I'll be missing this man all my life.
The best of the best Grover Washington Jr, Richard Tee, Ralph MacDonald, Paul Griffin, Eric Gale, Anthony Jackson, and Steve Gadd. Each one of them is a legend.
This is a lost art in modern day music. Does anybody play the mechanical instrument anymore? In the face of all the crap we hear today, this type of music is soothing and log-lasting. R.I.P. Grover...we love ya brother!!
I bought the cassette tape in 1980. Played it many times going to visit my girlfriend who lived 30 min away. It became our family theme. We still listen to it. Great music gets greater with time.
I grew up with Grover in grade school. I could hum all of his solos on every album. As an adult I sometimes catch myself playing something I heard him do years ago without even realizing thats where I got it from when improvising. RIP Grover.
He inspired me to try to play. Unfortunately I never got to see him perform or speak with him. He's sorely missed! I find myself doing some of his mannerisms when I play without realizing it! He could do things that are just incredible to this day! Especially when he soars on a solo! I find it good to practice with his stuff. It helped me get to my current level with a whole ocean to still try to learn. What a gift to us!
Grover had his own style and his own sound ..... When he played; you knew it was Grover ... Grover the master of the saxophone .... Circular breathing could extend his musical thoughts well beyond the music .... Thanks for posting marks6338 - - - There will never be another Grover ... RIP
Not many people are talented enough to lay claim to starting an entire genre of music. Grover Washington Jr was. I love watching him. His soul pours out through that sax.
My God, it don't get no better than this!! As a child, riding in the back seat of my parents car, up Pacific Highway to L. A; while this was blasting! What an exceptional feeling! He could play that Sax, like no other! From my head to my toes, Grover is missed! 🎶💃🎶
100% GENIUS !!! We're SO isolated here in NZ that I only just found out he'd died. Gutted! Was THE most talented of ALL saxophonists, inc Wilton Felder and Gerald Albright, who I hold in high regard.
la sensibilidad del músico se nota a cada momento, mas allá de sus capacidades y formación técnica Washington denota sus posibilidades de transmitir emociones...
Go 'head, Mr. Washington. He had the lungs of steel because I've never seen him get winded. All that playin' he did...my goodness. One of a kind. Nice lil' classy groove for the soul.
Grover with the old core, Richard, Ralph, Anthony, Eric, and Steve. Man, these guys built the bridge to smooth jazz! Moments like this should be forever preserved for posterity, lest future generations forget, or are lost in the music of their time. Feelin' like Wayne and Garth.."we're not worthy"👏👏👏👏
A classic - this has insipred me to add to my vinyl collection of Gover Washington Jr albums... May his memory live on in his music!! Much respect, Rewi (from Te Kuiti, NZ)
I was around the area and knew about the Grover concert at the Spectrum.I also knew his music as I became a Jazz fan a few years before as I heard Grover on the radio and he was a big 76'er fan with Dr.J as a big fan and promoter as well.Grover even played the National Anthem at the Spectrum before big games and the fans cheered! But I was a jerkoff and didn't see this concert. That song,"Winelight" cemented me as a lifelong Jazz fan.I listen to the song often.I found a even better version of it on a album produced by Jason Miles called "To Grover with Love" You won't be sorry if ya listen to that version of this great song.
I purchased this album the day after I heard this song on KINK FM 102 Portland Oregon back in 1980, just a couple years out of high school and realizing that my Big Band music up bringing had a big influence on my adult taste in music and Grover Washington Jr. though I never saw him in concert was at the top of my playlist for many years and is obviously still on my now very extensive playlist being 62 years of age, this song has certainly held up much better than I have, still smooth and very cool. Love all kinds of Jazz today.
One of the uniquely Greatest sax players and brilliant tune Winelight. No one can play like this particular live version. Thank you Grover fow awesome music and R.I.P. brother.
Heard this first time on Smooth Jazz 98.1 back in very 80s I'm blown away. Just makes work nice and easy on the night shift. Coupled this with Morning Dance, dang! Thanks for the video.
I am not from this generation but I am so very sorry this man is not showing his talent anymore. I love music and my generation should stop and hear what the best sounds like.
Thanks for uploading such relaxing, and stress-reducing music...while I'm at the library, checking my emails. Also, reminds me of the wonderful times I had, while doing live theater, at Chicago's, "Parkway Community House'. Grover's music was often played during intermission.
I see me back listening to his tape thousands of times on a thick and ugly tape player, with a bad sound... More than 30 years later, still impressive !
Every song on this Winelight album is gold...golly ....the good times i had
Winelight ❤

Music is the thing that unites us, no matter color, creed, preference, or language! Keep jammin!
Music has no color....and ALL the color at the same time. Its the one thing the ALL humans enjoy. When we enjoy music...we are all as one!
It doesn't matter if you're black or white, straight or LGBT, young or old. All that matters is that you've got talent!
Jazz is jazz. you have to have a fine ear, a sense of rhythm, a sense of vibration, when you understand jazz. Not everybody has the insight. You have to FEEL jazz, within your bones. When you feel it, you know you feel it, and that's it.
This music for the heart. Hello from Russia
Winelight is one of the most superb jazz songs in history
One of the best jazz songs of all time l started listening to his music 40 years ago and still love it

このアルバム♪、凄く良かった。レコードもCDも買ったよ。
Grover, Sanborn, Spyro Gyra since the late 70's. And it still works today. This music is forever as far as I am concerned. Was so sad when Grover passed.
Now there stands a man who enjoys what he's doing.
Grover Washington Jr is a gift from God. He speaks to you through his music.
yes !
Unfortunately he died from a heart attack in 1999. RIP

One of the best ever !
Your Damn right.
I love his style!
Absolutely. I saw him live with Michel Camilo. He’s definitely a beast.
Saw him live at the variety playhouse in atlanta in 95- best money I ever spent. we waited out front to get in and he greeted fans at the door as only he could. His loss was painful yet the sound lives on.
You are a very lucky man!

Mr. Eric Gale (black vest on guitar)also died a few years back. Great musicians that are sorely missed.

I saw him at the fox theater back in the nineties. He is one of my favorite artists. I listen to him all during my military service.
Wow. I had this LP when I was 14 (in 1981). Brings me back...
I've been playing the sax since I was nine years old. Grover Washington Jr, you inspire me.
first heard this in belfast in 85, my freind Olympia played it on the tape, brings back some very happy memories of belfast and lisburn road ,
Not many people are talented enough to lay claim to starting an entire genre of music. Grover Washington Jr was. I love watching him. His soul pours out through that sax.
grover was a good friend, when ever he's in dallas I'd always spend a little time taking to him
Amazing , i just hope the younger generation embrace these sounds
he escuchado esta canción incluso antes de que tuviese uso de la razón. Es y será parte de mi.
Phewwww! My idol! 😢😢😢 ❤❤❤ After 40yrs, I can’t get enough of him.
Grover gracias por haber dejado un legado musical extraordinario, para el bienestar de los humanos, agradezco tu increíble música.
I never cared much for saxaphone as a lead instrument UNTIL Mr Washington played WOW
He is missed by music lovers everwhere
What a killer rhythm section!
My God, it don't get no better than this!! As a child, riding in the back seat of my parents car, up Pacific Highway to L. A; while this was blasting!

He outdid himself and his band; on this HERE MASTERPIECE!! I love, love love this song!! 💕💕💕
I am happy to say that I've had the pleasure of seeing Grover live in concert. It still ranks as one of the greatest musical experiences of my life.
100% GENIUS !!! We're SO isolated here in NZ that I only just found out he'd died. Gutted! Was THE most talented of ALL saxophonists, inc Wilton Felder and Gerald Albright, who I hold in high regard.
Remembering Eric Gale, Richard Tee, Ralpha MacDonald, and Gorver Washington Jr. I wanted to hear more of these guys.
Such beautiful music. You're missed Grover Washington Jr
Ben listening to Grover since the late 70's. One of the great smooth jazz artists and a co-founder if the genre. It does not get any better than this.
Still one my favorite albums. A masterpiece.
Got goose bumps at the first opening notes! Awesome they don't make em like this anymore!
the man can sure make the music flow. RIP Grover
This man -- wow! Even better than the album version, which is perfection.
I see why he was my dads favorite. Now he's my favorite.
THE MOST HEARTFELT AND SOULFUL SAX SOUNDS I EVER HEARD!

Gadd's groove... solid like a rock.
Gadd The Boss.
Esta música nunca pasará de moda ni se olvidará en el tiempo. Lo bueno siempre prevalecerá.
I saw him in Atlanta in '94. I have seen them all, and this was the best show I ever saw hands down.
Grover Washington Jr is the best. Simply amazing.
When I was in High School my sister introduced me to Grover. Sooo smooth...or 'smoove' as she would say.

What a Legend!!!! Also had with him both on stage and recording the best musicians ever!!!
Grover.....Get in your Sports car and drive, take a ferry ride across Puget Sound, bring your horn and play along, because it's that good.....
It sure is Michael! Then and now! I needed this today!!
this whole album deserves to be in somebody's hall of fame. for real.
Jazz Funk perfection, just right for top down cruising. We all want to play sax (or bass) after this.
I was born in 1981. I love Grover, he's the man.
This combination of talent is unmatchable. To realize that so many are now gone only makes more appreciation.
