I was in Hampton VA in 1990 interviewing potential Colleges for my daughter to attend. I heard on the radio that he was in town. Rushed over got tickets, was near the front of the line when the doors opened and got an aisle seat 4 rows from the stage. He came off stage when he played this song and I could have touched him when he came down the aisle. Ranks up there as one of the BEST concerts I have attended. R.I.P.

I grew up playing Texas blues, funk and soul and am a groove oriented drummer. My favorite drummer is Bernard Purdie and favorite groove is the half time shuffle which (depending on how it’s played) can be a very busy groove. Then there’s Steve Gadd… his grooves often take the opposite approach. He will use the space created by NOT hitting a drum or cymbal to accentuate a groove. Outstanding musician and an American treasure. As are all of these musicians. How awesome would it be to play with Grover! I am blessed to have been born in 70. Great video.

It makes me so happy to see Grover clapping and smiling to this HUGE groove! And I love it when the drummer really starts grooving 4 minutes in....Bassman is really grooving too! Love this!!

His time and phrasing is inconsistent, and certain runs just seem to die mid flow. I’m not hating on Eric, I own his solo albums, but this performance just grated for me. AHH SUCH A TREAT TO SEE ALL THESE smooth JAZZ MASTERS THAT STARTED IT ALL. Remember seeing Grover so many times when he blew into the San Fransisco Bay Area. One time my best Buddy and I caught his 3 shows in a row at the "Old Circle-star Theater". We met him after one the concert nights. Shook his hand, me my buddy didn't wash our hands for week! LoL. Simply pure magical music forever a classic and never gets old, not like a lot of disposable music created today. Its only my thought for the moment, all music is great. But truly, will alot of music of today really stand the test of time? Remains to be seen. Definitely this song is Number 1 on my list till the day I am pushing up Daisies.!! LoL. Fantastic Post!!
This is my new go-to jam. I listen to this EVERY ! DAY ! sometimes for hours at a time on loop. And STILL ! will look up often to watch. LOVE ! LOVE ! LOVE !
Got introduced to jazz in college in 1980 and Grover was my first taste of the sweetness of smooth jazz ! ! Studied many a night with his music in the background. This music is timeless ! ! A true legend ! !
I was blessed to see one the greatest concerts of all time at UC Berkeley's Greek Theatre...The lineup was Ray Parker Jr. and Raydio, Herbie Hancock and the Rocket Band, George "Dukey Stick" Duke and closed out by Grover Washington Jr. with Locksmith...awesome show and experience...It was almost imperative every payday my partners and I would go to Tower Records or Leopold's in Berkeley to pickup the latest and the greatest albums ...
I was at that concert too... I was a City Kid, but made the trip over to Moe's to comb the used stacks in the basement... how do you explain Tower Records to day? Saw Grover @ Keystone Korner a bunch and my all time favorite show was '91, @ Paul Masson Mountain Winery... where they screwed my season ticket order up... so they comped me 2 tickets front row in the middle. There were some potted ferns and a small space heater and Grover stood literally right in front of us. He kept fooling with the mic stand and the heater, until about 3 tunes in, I moved the plants & heater so he could stay warm. Basically the heater was heating my date and me. He thought that was funny as hell and started talking to us off mic between the tunes. Grover could play the tenor man!!!!
Michael LoveJoi Saw some of these same musicians at the Berkeley Performance Center in Boston. In my not so humble opinion it has the best acoustics anywhere. Boston over the years in my opinion has been the greatest music town in the world. Great clubs and hands down the best college radio stations in the country. That's not even open for debate. Case closed. Maybe I'm a little partial. It was great growing up there for this reason alone. NOW AND FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE I SAY FUCK MASSACHUSETTS AND EVERYONE THERE !
Oh man this brings back memories. My older brother turned us on to Grover back in the 70's. He couldn’t go to sleep without hearing Mister Magic at least 4 times in a row. And that was on an 8 track tape, so you know that took awhile. Lol Took my mom to see him and Pieces of a Dream back in the 80’s. It was a great night of music. Got a chance to see him three times and took my daughter to the last concert he did in AZ. Brought tears to my eyes when be passed. RIP Mom and Grover
R.IP Grover Washington Jr. was and always will be one of the greatest jazz musician of our time. didn't know nobody that could beat him. he done this song in jazz first.
This Jazz classc is stretched out & layered together with washes of subtle funk in a blend that enables Grover to blow with a great deal of Soul over some hip instrumentation is a Kudu label masterpiece
Grover just digging it with a stellar group of star players- Gadd, Gale, McDonald, Jackson, Richard Tee. Who could ask for anything more? Wonderful and cooking with the gas on high!
I'm his number one fan and that you can be sure of. I've followed Grover all over Philly. Teds Supper Club, The Bijou, Academy of Music, All Over Atlantic City, Zanzibar Blue Love Love Love this man's talent. #Unmatched. #Trulyunsung Jazz fusion at its best. And the band is off the chizzy.

A lot of respect to the late Eric Gale on guitars 👍👍👍👍👍. Didn’t get the recognition that he deserved for being the awesome guitarist that he was . His stint with his group ‘Stuff’ and his solo albums are still full of his skilled playing . Long live his sound , his music ,his talent. He needs to be honored.

forever a classic and never gets old, not like a lot of disposable music created today. Its only my thought for the moment, all music is great. But truly, will alot of music of today really stand the test of time? Remains to be seen. Definitely this song is Number 1 on my list till the day I am pushing up Daisies.!! LoL. Fantastic Post!!
That percussion solo, well, duo ;-) is a masterclass in musicianship, minimalism and generosity from two masters. We are blessed.
....a great piece...i am very happy to have heard this live by the man, himself...!
Wes McGrumr
The live version sounds so good and clean 😎🖒
This is my new go-to jam. I listen to this EVERY ! DAY ! sometimes for hours at a time on loop. And STILL ! will look up often to watch. LOVE ! LOVE ! LOVE !
Got introduced to jazz in college in 1980 and Grover was my first taste of the sweetness of smooth jazz ! ! Studied many a night with his music in the background. This music is timeless ! ! A true legend ! !
R I P Grover Washington Jr Your music will last forever.

Parabéns.
Now you can't beat this it's the best of the best of the best never ages it just young and funky
Funny, till today July 4th, 2024. I'd forgotten all about this fine man. 68 yrs, and time just blazed by me.
Michael LoveJoi I grew up in the wrong era.
Michael LoveJoi Im so jealous
Michael LoveJoi Saw some of these same musicians at the Berkeley Performance Center in Boston. In my not so humble opinion it has the best acoustics anywhere. Boston over the years in my opinion has been the greatest music town in the world. Great clubs and hands down the best college radio stations in the country. That's not even open for debate. Case closed. Maybe I'm a little partial. It was great growing up there for this reason alone. NOW AND FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE I SAY FUCK MASSACHUSETTS AND EVERYONE THERE !
Michael LoveJoi
thanks for sharing.

Absolutely brilliant with a red hot band in support.
Never saw this before -- best version of Mr Magic I've seen or heard. Missing Grover.
Jay Dee there’s a go go version check it out!
They all don't look very happy in this video, though. Maybe it was the cocaine.
Wow, miss this man and his music so much, taken far too early. This just makes my heart sing. Music gets no better than this!

I couldn't agree more!
Eric Gale.... The Best .
This is the grooviest thing I've heard in 2016 - just so cool - total class
