Big Box PC Game Collecting/Shipping Pains

  • I guess I just needed to rant a bit about how many games I get damaged in the mail. This isn't close to all of them, but these are some highlights.
Water damage, crushing,, per-shippment damage, missing discs, and so much more. Sometimes I do get a well packed box that is water sealed and crush protected, but most often not.
As a notice, the blue version of Earthworm Jim 3D was likely available in the US but everything I search for online brings up mostly yellow boxes. So YMMV.

My most important lesson with collecting boxed video games is that is that shipping damage due to the sender indifference towards packaging and / or deceptive listings happen. And sooner or later you'll be the victim of it. I think my trackrecord is about 1 in 10 of bad experiences. What I do to minimize the risk of the first (shipping damage) is always to contact the seller directly after the purchase, state that I've made the purchase, say it's nothing personal but specifically ask for sturdy packaging because of (a lot) of bad experiences and say that with sturdy packaging I mean cardboard, not a gift wrap or a bubble wrap envelop. I'd like to think this helps.

I have some GREAT advice (the BEST advice): ebay will always side with the buyer on returns. It is the sellers responsibility to ensure the package arrives as advertised. You can easily return your damaged product. I just bought a $150 sealed copy of Torment: Tides of Numenera on ebay and it was damaged. I was offered a 20% discount (another piece of advice, cause you will typically received discount offers to sidestep the full refund process). I said, nuh-uh, for 150 i'll do the return. Seller pays for return shipping. Seller learns to do better with packaging. Seller learns to sell. I don't get owned 25% of the time. Good trade-off imho! I also sell on ebay btw. So, don't feel so compelled to pity the seller that pwns you.

I bought my Xserve off ebay and the seller put the server in two boxes that were cut in half to fit it, they also packed it with paper. And it was damaged where the back of server was bent in and can’t close the top of the case.

That sucks. I would probably want a server shipped in a crate. Or at least with thin plywood walls in a box. They are just so dense that cardboard alone doesn't stand a chance.

Nice video! Usually you only get to hear success stories which makes buying stuff yourself even more frustrating, because you feel extra unlucky.

Here in Brazil the post office won't accept crappy packages. Anything must be packed in "blank" cardboard boxes or at least wrapped in kraft paper.

I remember I bought some games of a woman on Facebook, who decided it would be a fantastic idea to package the DVD case games inside the big box games, then stick them in large letter envelopes. Needless to say, my copy of Empire Earth is remarkably buggered.

That shelving must drive you nuts, though, the way that every shelf is bowed downwards under the weight of the games.

I had a mint copy of the original Wasteland get crushed because it shipped in a large envelope. And now I make sure that people ship these in a protective box.

Good tips. Sellers with terrible packing skills are abundant on eBay. I have received odd ball packaging similar to you. Someone once sent me some stuff in an adult diaper box. Yeah that wasn't good for the neighbors to see on my porch for the day. Had to do some splaining.

If I receive it damaged I always return it, especially if it was expensive. I also add a note asking politely if the seller can "ship it in a box with padding to ensure it wont be damaged during shipment".these sellers dont know your intent on buying the game so you need to tell them.

Windows 95 upgrade can be installed, it just ask for one of windows 3.11 disks. same with the 98 upgrade.

    • @nickwallette6201
      @nickwallette6201 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes. Win95 onward will just ask for the installation media of a previous version. It doesn't need to be installed.
I don't think Win 3.x ever shipped as an upgrade. (Could be wrong.)
DOS 6.22 will refuse to install if the disk does not have a previous version of DOS. Quick fix: Exit setup (F3), run fdisk, format, and sys to make the C: drive bootable. Reboot into setup on the floppy. That's all you need to do. Not sure if this works on DOS 5 and earlier - I don't have upgrade media for those.

I found your video because I want to know how to properly ship big box games. Instead I got how not to ship them, which is entertaining, but not helpful to me right now. Is it acceptable to break down the box and then ship flat?

I would ask the recipient how they feel about that first. It's not possible all the time because some boxes will have inner dividers that are glued and can tear or badly bend if forced. But I do wish that some boxes I've purchased had been shipped like that.
Some more general tips I would have would be to put the game box inside of a shopping bag to help prevent water damage. If the box doesn't have an inner cardboard "skeleton" then you may want to pad the inside a bit to help prevent crushing. Crushing is the number one problem for boxes so steps to avoid that are the most appreciated. Don't ship it in an envelope or just wrap it in paper. A larger box with some kind of packing material to keep the box from getting crushed is going to be the best bet. There are a bunch of different kinds of big boxes, the easiest ones to damage are almost the same as cereal boxes. But there are some tougher ones like early Maxis titles that have two stiff interlocking parts that are very difficult to crush.
Worst case I would ask the recipient if they have any preferences. They may also be willing to chip in more for shipping if packing it better is going to cost more than you thought it would. Almost always I would rather pay more shipping than is being asked to ensure that the box arrives undamaged.

0:38 Wait...are you saying that you bought a copy of SimCity with a bunch of personal information in it and you still have all their personal information in the box? I mean, you did look in the box to see if it was the one that had the information in it. Get rid of that shit bro lol.
