    I guess it's a universal law that every Walmart MUST have at least one copy of the GTA trilogy on ps2.....Despite the fact that the PS2 has been dead for years.

      I went it to one about a year and a half ago and saw one, though "That's odd. Guess I'll buy it." Then a few days later I went back and saw 3, the next week they had about 20. I think they're breeding.

      At the cost of giving up your actual ownership. Steam ever stops being a thing and all the cash you forked over becomes nil. lol
      Plus...most games take a hell of a lot longer than a "few minutes" to download, dude. Hell of a lot longer.

      Ya i remember going into the old Babages which then became EB games then game stop and spending hours just going through the PC games trying to find a game in my price range. a lot of the time when a new game came out me and a group of friends would go in on it together and then find a no CD crack. so we could all play it. Oh how times have changed.

      Space engineers is a good game and has been on steam for over 3 years in Alpha. Since you need an internet connection and steam account to play the game it doesn't really matter that the disk version is incomplete as you can just update it through steam.

      There's loads of early access games on the shelves in my local GAME. Also all the PC games are sold as steam codes on cardboard, and always higher priced than they are on steam. It's not like you're getting a disc or anything to make up the additional cost.

    It's weird that I feel nostalgic for going to a store and picking a game up off the shelf while at the same time I am all for the convenience of digital purchases. I think it's mostly due to the overall sense of mystery that used to accompany getting a new game since all we had to go on back then was a review in a magazine as well as what was displayed on the box.
    Your videos like this and the LGR Thrifts series really bring me back to the days when consumerism was more fun. Thanks!

    I miss buying actual game cartridges! Yes, they were more expensive, but the sound of sorting through them in order to find the game you wanted to play... classic. There's actually a store near me that still sells them, along with boxed PC games. Haven't seen too many big boxes in there though... I'll have to keep checking.

      I always go into Gamestop or other stores that used to sell N64 game cartridges and miss actually being able to look at them. Now it's mostly pawn and used/refurbished specialty stores that carry them, and a lot of them are Madden or other sports games that nobody wants. I once knew of a store called Movie Trading Company that sold actually good games, but at way to high of a price, and not even with the box, manual, etc., just the cartridge.

    • @DarthTella
      @DarthTella 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a refurbished games store in the mall near me called GameShack. They're pretty good, and have a decent selection. They were even selling Dreamcast VMU's a few months ago! I don't go in there often for fear I'll spend all my money!

    • @MARIOGUY789
      @MARIOGUY789 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Niki Groeger
      Yeah, the store I mentioned in my first comment sells a lot of other cool stuff in addition to games, I think I also saw a Dreamcast VMU there as well. I don't live near that store anymore, but I will always remember it. Another place I went to get some of the games I wanted was a flea market, but, there's a huge chance you're not getting what you're paying for, (i.e. bootlegs, broken stuff, etc.), guess I was lucky, because everything I got from there was an actual game, I even got my own NES for about $30 (It doesn't work now, due to unknown problems).

      Granted this is true for "big box stores" here. Pallets of cases of product are typically bought 12, 24, 36 packs at a time at them. The first store (Walmart) is not unlike any other electronics store in most areas, but this is only one section in the building so everything is more compressed to a smaller area (hence the TVs next to video games next to headphones). I remember stores banning video recording their stores b/c competition. I don't know if that's still a thing.

      Yes, but what's even more mysterious is that they sell them at some stores for at least $20, which is completely ridiculous if you look at some of the titles being sold. Less than the original retail price, yes, but worth 20 dollars? Heck no.

    • @motherurck7542

      @MARIOGUY789 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      *****
      Exactly, Walmart here in the States overprices some things that don't need it, such as the above mentioned older games, when, as you said, you can walk into a thrift store and even sometimes pawn shops and get the same stuff for far less. The problem with some thrift shops is that stuff is likely to be stolen or missing.

    • @LGR
      @LGR  7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yeah, I haven't seen an actual PC game section in a game store in years, unless you count a section at the counter for cards with Steam codes on them. It's only the larger retailers like this that still carry them.

    • @mcFreaki
      @mcFreaki 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      really goes to show just how ubiquitous steam and other digital distribution platforms have become. from a business perspective, why stock it in physical stores when everyone's buying it online anyway? it's just added cost for not a lot of return.
      i do feel like something has been lost though.

    • @Captain.Scarlet

      in Russia like 90% of games were sold in jewel boxes just until recently and for very low prices, my little collection is 90% jewel box as well. They started shifting to DVD boxes just around 2013 or smth, and the prices are now around $30. I remember back in the day you could get HoMM 3 for less than a $1. When Resident Evil 5 only came out, I got it for $4. Though, of course, the rates of money has changed. For example that HoMM3 was actually $2 by early 00s rates. Still, it's super cheap compared to US' prices and modern russian prices.

      oh actually, they're still selling like 40%-50% of new games in jewel boxes, I just opened the biggest russian web store and it sells, for example, Dishonored 2 (Jewel) for $31, and Dishonored 2 (DVD-Box) for $36.

    I wasn't anywhere near a gamer of any sort during the days of big box stuff, but even I get nostalgia thinking of Costco's PC game section. They had big boxes for everything, unceremoneously, but neatly laid on their back on the same pallet platforms they keep clothing on. I have a distinct memory of Warcraft III during release, where they had a 2x2 square of each edition. Human cover, Undead cover, Night Elf cover and Orc cover. There was Fallout 2, Command and Conquer, Mechwarrior 3... Sometimes I regret not being into gaming during that era. Digital content is boring, and huge boxes with flip-open covers made me look even if I was only there to look at the books on the other end.

    There's stores near where i live in the UK which stock PC games but you'll only usually see the big AAA games like COD and The Sims 4 along with a shit ton of shovelware like hidden object games or those compilations such as "100 great family games!" or something like that.

    Back in the 90s I used to be intrigued by the PC boxes in Wal-Mart because while console game cases were always behind the sliding glass that only employees could open (and they still are, I bought some Wii U games that were on sale at Wal-Mart a couple months back), the PC games were out in the open for anyone to pick up and look at. I always found it interesting that the boxes were typically bigger than the ones for console games, and of course some companies like Eidos had ones that were uniquely shaped (like the ones you showed off in that one video).
    I haven't bought any games from Sam's Club since the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube console generation, and one of the only ones I recall getting from there was the Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King game for the Gamecube. Even so I do remember they used to have the games in one big section where the boxes were all lined up on shelves and these you actually could pick up and look at (though they were in anti-theft cases that only employees could open at the register of course), and since this was when demo units were still a thing I recall sometimes playing demos there while my mom shopped (I recall this was how I got to experience Metroid Prime and Blinx for the first time). Nowadays I legit can't even find the video game section in my local Sam's Club, not even a shelf with those cards you take up to a register. It's weird I can't seem to find it either because they do sell game consoles there, there's an area near the front of the store where they have PS4s and Xbox Ones in a locked metal shelf.

    This is super interesting. Here in Chile boxed PC games are more of rare sight these days.
    There's a store that still sells the original Diablo 2 box, I'm super tempted to get it but by the exact same prince I could buy the base game + LoD digitally in battle.net.
    For some reason I just love seeing boxed games.

    Huh, I did not know Space Engineers got a retail release, and I have that game. Luckily, it is one of those Early Access Games that is still very actively being worked on by the developers; Version 01.165 DEV just came out this past Thursday and basically completely overhauled the game by replacing everything in the game with new HD models, added a couple new objects, added magboots, improved enemy AI, and updated multiplayer stability.

    Over here in Holland you'll rarely see any big box games in the storeshelves, though interestingly enough you'll almost always see a Diablo 2 box pop up somewhere.
    Which is great because I played that game for almost a decade straight.

    Hey Clint, I am from the US but studying in a Canadian City, I went to a Wal-Mart for a new monitor for my PC a few weeks ago and while I was waiting for an employee to be free to unlock it for me I decided to check out the PC game shelf myself. It was mostly the same stuff, battle chests galore,a few sims 3 expansions and sims 4 copies, but there was a copy of Makin Magic, yes for the Sims 1. Selling for 32.99. How Crazy, I was tempted to pick it up but I didn't have much extra cash at the moment. Still though, Makin Magic. Kinda made me think of simpler times for the sims.

    Space Engineers is an awesome game. you won't regret that purchase. Even at the beginning it wasn't a typical "early access" game. It's been functional the whole time, they added planets and are finally getting around to optimizing the game for lower end hardware. You can do some really insane things using the systems in the game. Fully automated robots and complex systems. Definitely on my all time top 10 list.

    Here's a hot tip:
    Check out the Walmart clearance section for electronics. They often have a lot of good stuff since everyone buys their stuff on Amazon and Newegg. I got a Razr Abyssus 2014 for $15 and a Logitech G602 for $35 last spring (these are now normal prices for both of these). As an Employee I check it out weekly. Everything from flash drives, to mice and headsets.

    I remember being at the Champs Elysees in Paris, two years ago, and one of the stores on that street was called Fnac. It was like a combination of Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, and any large comic book stores. They had an entire area for PC games that completely outdid any other retailer here in the U.S. I could go to Wal-Mart and Best Buy, and there would be a sad selection of physical copies; Fnac, on the other hand, had a wide array of different games, from old to new, even including a row for the Sims 2 and 3, with all their expansions. It's probably the best store I've been to, in Europe.

    Where I live I don't see many PC games in stores anymore, any games that are sold as physical copies are mostly PS3/PS4, XBox or Nintendo 3DS games and maybe I'll find a few PC games but not many compared to console games. I miss the days of going into places and finding boxed PC games, especially since we didn't have broadband until around late 2004 and still were using dial up until then, so I couldn't go online and download games and preferred going to stores and buying physical copies like I always used to and maybe seeing games I'd never heard of or might not have got otherwise. BTW, still waiting for more Christmas LGR videos!

    I remember seeing the PC Game section of Wal-Mart in our area around the 1999-early 2000s era. It was two rows, both sides, and it had everything from new releases to releases from back in the 90s as well. You could find anything and everything when it came to PC games there. Now, like this, it's an absolute whimper of what it once was.
    We had a lot of computer and electronic stores in this area of similar nature. Games for days. Even sometimes had games you could try out on PCs in the store (Best Buy).
    Our current Best Buy stopped selling PC Games period. Meijer as well I believe. Which was another place to find games back in the day. Wal-Marts here look about what you saw in this video. I do not have a membership to Sam's Club so I can't tell you for sure in my area.
    It's kind of a sad ordeal, honestly. A shame.

    I remember buying Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 at Sam's. I was deciding between that and Petz 4. Then a few weeks later I found out that if you download the demo of Petz 4 and the two patches, it replaced any files limiting it to the demo and just became the full game. For those who don't know, the original games of that series before it was bought by Ubisoft were great.

    Funny, last weekend I checked the PC games section of a major electronics store at the largest mall here in Vienna, Austria. There's still lots on offer, but besides the current releases it's often re-releases of re-releases. They also had the SIms 2(!) expansions still on sale at €14.99 a pop. :D
    10 years ago I loved bargain hunting at those stores, sometimes finding elusive games in a cheap jewel case, or go to the little shop with its imported, overpriced US (i.e. untranslated) versions of games. But the last physical PC game I bought was Saints Row III, because in a store was 20 bucks cheaper than on Steam. I only opened the box to get the registry code, though.

    Here, in Greece, we don't have GAME or Gamestop or some of those big stores. Some of our big chains have the standard stuff (CoD, Battlefield, FIFA etc) and some times you might find an indie game, like now there is Obsidian's Tyranny or The Dwarves or Warhammer End Times: Vermintide, or even Broken Age.
    Some times, they are cheap or way cheaper than Steam, like a brand new Shadow Warrior 2013 is 10 euro, or standard price. It really goes by where you go and what they have.

    Interesting topic. I haven't been down to the PC section in a Walmart or Target in my area (DFW) lately since I buy everything on Steam, but I did get to go to a PC section in a Target in the Shreveport area around Black Friday last year. They had mostly AAA stuff - fourteen thousand copies of Fallout 4 (it had just come out around that time), StarCraft, WoW, things like that. They did have a few older things - I recall seeing a deluxe edition of Rollercoaster Tycoon - and it was a pretty good sized section.

    Even though I miss seeing those rows and rows of game boxes shining to me in the stores, I prefer the way games are sold today. You can get amazing discounts on Steam and simply download them, no need to get in freaking huge lines to buy them on release date or christmas eve or whatever special date... or wait them to refil the empty shelves. This is coming from someone who used to love game boxes for their art and those chunky manuals that usually came together.
