    I really miss these days in gaming. The days when you got an entire game with a full length manual, and maybe a map with some other goodies. These days you're lucky if you even get a full game with a digital download. You get way less for your money anymore, and its a sad thing.

    • @Cannotbetamed1
      @Cannotbetamed1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Yeah, you need to shell out a lot of extra money for collectors editions for any change of physical things

    • @hollownail
      @hollownail 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes and no. We did tend to get more in the box, but the cost of production and development was a lot lower while game costs were often, with inflation, at least as expensive as today. I'd kill for non-CE physical boxed editions that had some cool manuals and stuff.

    You should definitely play Monkey Island 3. It's available on GOG and works on windows 10 no problems. If you liked the first two, the third is very different looking, but the humour is genuinely second to none and it's a fantastic and really fun game. Highly reccommended.

      Also 7:44 The London Dungeons is incredible, I went there with my Mum while visiting family over there (She's British I'm American).
      It's essentially a museum right in downtown London, but it's built up around the partially ruined _actual_ dungeons that were used to imprison and torture people way back in the day, and they're HUGE. So you walk down these rows of real dungeon cells and inside each is animatronic people or sometimes wax figures of people being tortured in all the messed up ways we used to do it. And around each cell are display cases with the real implements of said torture - thumb screws, brands ... all manner of artifacts of pain and brutality.
      That was a very memorable trip for me as a young teenager 😁. I ate that shit up at the time haha. But it really is very informative and an awesome mix of horrorshow and edifying museum. Highly recommended if you're ever in London!

    The industry went from big box filled with goodies, to big box with no goodies, to small box, to no box. Existing big boxes with goodies are guaranteed to fetch good prices on Ebay, such as my "id Anthology" box set I bought for $125 in 1996 but is now worth hundreds. 20-30 years ago you were EXPECTED to read the manual before playing the game, so many games included thick manuals, reference cards, etc. When players stopped reading manuals, games stopped including them. That was the start of the emptying of the big box which led to small box, and the end of an era.

  • @PCGamingGoodies
    @PCGamingGoodies 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    We still get frills for games, but nowadays they are mostly virtual frills in the form of MP3 soundtracks, PDF artbooks, and the likes. Physical frills, especially high quality ones, are rare today. I remember King's Quest came with a hint book and an invisible pen to reveal hints. Magic Carpet came with 3D glasses for the game's 3D mode. Many flight sim games came with elaborate pilot hand books. All the physical knick knacks we used to get are what we miss most today.

    I'll say it - I was glad when PC games moved to the DVD case standard, the big boxes were cool and all but they just took up so much space. The good ones were totally worth it, but I also remember so many that were just a big empty box with a couple of discs and a small manual rattling round inside . . .

    • @Cannotbetamed1
      @Cannotbetamed1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a bit of a balance needed. I like having my little collection of big boxes but I wouldn’t want every game I bought to be in a big box. Who has the space for that? It’s why all the boxes from the 90s got thrown away

    The only boxes I keep are the ones for Thief and System Shock 2 from my idolized Looking Glass Studios, and the ancient Darkseed featuring the work of H. R. Giger for the Amiga, which is beautiful. The most amazing cases I remember were two games for the Magnavox Odyssey 2, Quest for the Rings and Conquest of the World. They included boards, pieces and keyboard overlays that you had to use concurrently with the games, which were great for that time.

      I was a kid (middle school) when we had those Sierra/LucasArts games and although I valued the hell out of things like that "Adventurer's Manual" from QFG1, eventually they were relegated to the "disused memorabilia" corner of the closet and they disappeared (in a landfill). I gave away two paper shopping bags of my childhood NES carts in the late 90s because at the time they were just sitting there and a guy at work said he was working on building his NES "museum".

    What strikes me most about this is how focused you were on point-and-click/adventure, and RPGs back in the day. My early PC gaming (mid-late 90's, early 2000's) was split fairly evenly between isometric RPGs, FPS, RTS and strategy. I think the only PnC I played was Monkey Island? I knew of the Sierra games, Kings/Space/Police Quest etc, and I had heard of some of the LucasArts ones like Indiana Jones but I never prioritised them. Like you, most of my platforming, run-and-gun, action-adventure gaming only happened on console until about 10-15 years ago. Some genres, like fighting, racing, and sports, I have only ever played on console. I know the line has blurred a lot between PC and console gaming now so I really should branch out more.

    • @Cannotbetamed1

    I've owned two pc "big box" games: War Wind (never played beyond startup) and Tomb Raider Gold (the only TR game that I have played and completed). Keyboards are hard to play games with. >_< I've also owned Claw and Death Gate, but those were gifts and not in the boxes. The latter is a fun adventure game. Would recommend.

    Up there with Castlevania SOTN, Super Metroid, Goldeneye 007 and GTA5.

    saying this to anyone thats thinking on getting into big box collection if you can find just the box keep it as thats the part that most likly been lost from a kit.
    peaple did decent saving the game and cd case, maybe the critical game manual and map.
    the free adverticment flier thats gone for the most part.
    the box have been cleared out by ones mom soon after the game was bought when it was released.

    OK; you know how I work: when you list, I list choice bits!
    *1. Baldur's Gate(s):* I was fortunate enough to start with BG I and get II and Throne of Bhaal as soon as they came out, which is good as they use the "each game is higher-level than the last" system used in the Gold Box AD&D games of the 80s. In AD&D most of the traditional fantasy foes can be dealt with at 8th Level or less, so Baldur's Gate (which started you at 1st Level) had more of a "bright adventure for young (twentysomething) heroes" feel than its sequel, which was a bit loaded down with high-level virtually-insta-kill magics and monsters (as the game started at ~7th/8th Level). Throne of Bhaal starts you off at mega-high level (~16+) and thus it's somewhat amusing how easily your demi-godly party can still be smushed by Fire Giants! It also has some extra-planar elements, but I agree that they were much better handled in *Planescape: Torment.*
    *2. Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magic Obscura:* When I was in High School (well, an Academy, but I digress) I had made a campaign world in which magic-users were at war with technology users, so this game intrigued me so much that I almost considered playing it (I never claimed to be much of a gamer girl lol). Speaking of which, I would like to see a woman play this game if only to see what the dress equipment looks like (all the playthroughs/reviews I saw were dudes wearing tuxes), so if you thusly give it another go, I'll be watching!
    *3. Blade Runner:* Most noteworthy for me is that the role of love-interest/heroine Rachel Rosen is actually reprised by *Mary Sean Young* (credited in the movie as "Sean Young" because they'd rather give her a man's name than use the name "Mary" for some reason). I would like to see you have a go at it!
    *4. Diablo II:* I can totally relate to your concerns about the game. I played the Paladin and wanted the sword Azurewrath and the Angel's Raiment armour set until I played through the game and only ever got ONE THING of that level of rarity to drop: a Barbarian Hauberk I couldn't even use! It looks grotesquely beautiful but is a BLOODBATH GRIND FEST; I'm glad I played through it once but never even bothered getting Lord of Destruction, let alone playing through it a second time. The few story-based cutscenes were cool, though.

    • @Cannotbetamed1
      @Cannotbetamed1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd like to play Arcanum again but every time I try to go back to it I'm driven away by the awful combat. The skill system is so cool, but the combat is garbage. Maybe there's a mod or something I can find to make it suck less.

    The story of Counter Strike: Sierra were the original publishers of HL, before Valve struck out on their own. CS is a HL mod that Valve quickly acquired and sold as a HL title for a few years. CS and it's developers are now a standalone Valve IP.
