I found about 15 big box PC games at a Goodwill for $2.99 each about 6 months ago...great find...pretty much all complete WITH the receipts from the original purchase! Terminator, Predator 2, Crusader: No Remorse, Syndicate, etc.
Best big box PC find I ever had.

lucky you..i donated all of 'my' pc games from the late 90s-00s in 2010, even though i was selling older 80s and 90s disk games on ebay. No one wanted the cd ones back then. Too much piracy i guess and no collecting. Plus, pain to get most of them to work. How things are changing

You can always go the MJR route and tell your local game store that you're interested in any that come through even if they don't usually buy them! They might not care, but it's worth a shot.

I lucked out a couple of summers ago. A collection of big box games was listed on CL, within an hour from my house. Needless to say I jumped on that, called up the seller and met him at his house. This gentlemen was in his mid-sixties, retired, and told me that his wife was pestering him to get rid of those unsightly boxes that took up so much space. He had taken such good care of them, kept the discs, manuals, inserts, even receipts! Some of them are Wolfenstein 3D, Spear of Destiny, DOOM (1, 2, 3, Final), Crusader No Remorse/No Regret, Diablo 2, and so many more, and I'm happy to have them!

I remember the shrink wrap getting warm in the stores and continuing to shrink, crushing the box. So, if you find one of those completely sealed do you open it and risk losing value or leave the shrink wrap and risk damage to the box?

put a little snick in the plastic on the bottom to release the beast/vacuum?

    • @RevRaptor898

It's not really a vacuum problem the plastic rap shrinks when it gets hot, once it happens you have no option but to remove the plastic.

I need to give you the biggest THANK YOU!!! I went to that ebay link and found Planescape Torment. I have been looking for that game for almost 10 years. I remember playing it when I was 12-13 years old and could never remember the name or anything about the game until this morning when I seen the cover on ebay. I've spent hours searching google and forums looking for any clue that would bring me to it. Your a hero man.

Man, I've been on the search for a long time for original, factory sealed games I loved as a kid. I've succeeded on several games. But some are proving hard to find. I've been looking for original, factory sealed games of Thief: The Dark Project, Thief II: The Metal Age, Thief: Deadly Shadows, all of the Baldur's Gate games, The Realm Online, the Carmageddon Franchise (I've seen them on ebay a few times and lost the bids), Sacrifice, and the Redneck Rampage franchise. I did manage to get my hands on original factory sealed games of Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption and Bloodlines. As well as Asheron's Call and it's expansions. This is proving to be quite the adventure in finding these things!

I don't keep many big box PC games anymore, I have a few typically collector's editions, and more iconic games. They just take up too much space, but the ones I do keep I often times vacuum seal to preserve. It's really the only way I've found that protects them.

I'm just gonna put this out here and try my luck. When I was a kid, I had a Sierra game called Stay Tooned! (yes the exclamation mark was part of the title). Fast forward literally 20 years later and several house moves, and I've managed to retain the CD in a spare CD case, but I lost the big box. If anyone's selling (or donating :P ) a copy, do get in touch! That game was integral to my childhood.

I've got a small collection of Amiga big box games (around 40) and i do not even know if the disks work. Let's be thankful for hard drives in Amiga's and game installers these days :)

I started collecting BBPC games last year. I Was able to find an old woman who worked with PC Support in the 80's, and she had 2 boxes with games. about 40+ games. Was able to buy everything for 50$. ( I Live in Norway so the prices here are much higher, trust me, it was a steal) A lot of good games, like The Sims, Gabriel knight, Kings Quest and Sierra games. :)

They are hard to come across anymore, but when I do find them, the person usually has a LOT of them. I have amassed a collection of several hundred big box games, and a can honestly say most came from just a few bulk buys. I collect mostly PC and Commodore, but have a smaller collection of Amiga, MAC and Apple games.

While at a trip in Australia, I went to a thrift store and found a Big box PC game of The Sims 1 in good condition for $5.00. While coming home though being in a tight large suitcase, I really wished I got something to protect it, because it got a big water stain on the top middle of the outside box. Not to mention I also accidentally sat on the outside box as well while taking it out.

Goodwill, Thrift Stores usually will still carry PC games, for protection, they should make those clear plastic protectors for snes boxes etc. but make larger ones for bigbox games, but it would depend on demand for that type.

I've had a lot of luck at local Goodwill stores in small towns around my state. I've gotten some really good ones (I've posted a few in the past in the group and in Sierra groups), and usually in pretty good shape.
My advice to everyone though that picks up, always open it up (Assuming it's opened and you can) and make sure all is in there. I've found numerous empty boxes.

  • @larryladeroute971
    @larryladeroute971 7 ปีที่แล้ว

You remarked on protecting Big Box games. So far I have found that different sizes of comic and magazine bags work...until someone makes protectors like the do for cartridge game boxes. Sometimes they fit perfect, other times a little tape to tuck in the corners and voila. Also I have learned from shippers that packing some of the boxes with bubble wrap can help prevent crushing. Thanks for the video and giving PC collecting some attention. Oh yeah...and driving up ebay prices... :)

    Great Vid, MJR.
This one brings back a lot of memories for me thinking about how PC gaming is what got me into gaming in the first place.
I saw several of my favorite Sierra games on your shelf. Lords of the Realm II got me into playing Strategy/RTS games, Kings Quest Series, Space Quest, Police Quest, and the Quest For Glory Series.
One of my favorite memories of Sierra gaming were the little surprise details they put into the games. Watching people forget to do the diagnostics on the ship in Space Quest, or check the tires on the patrol car in Police quest, gave my friends and I so many laughs.
I wonder what you would think of doing a Sierra Games history video.

The only pc game so far ive had to deal with a verification code was the half life goty box set that had blue shift and the hd expansion. I bought it years ago but lost the codes so when I built an xp machine for the older games all I could do was look online for some codes and enter them until one worked. Its nice to play those games again even better now that I actually know what im doing.

Hey Metal Jesus, I'm a huge fan! You've often said Planescape Torment has one of your favorite PC game narratives. There are so many great games based off of D&D, and it seems like countless games are, at least in spirit, inspired by tabletop RPG, often because the developers were geeks who played tabletop rpgs! Do you have any experiences with tabletop RPGs? After all, heavy metal, video games, and D&D go hand-in-hand.

I only have about 15 big box games and pick them up when I do find them. Even with my small collection of big box games they are a nightmare to store end up just getting shuffled around my game room to make space for my decently large console collection. I would love to get more into retro computer stuff but computers require a ton more work and knowledge in comparison to consoles and really even arcade stuff.

I wanted to start collecting PC big box video games but found it to be a pain: There seem to be very few interested, there are insane amount of different games + variations and they have close to no worth (except for a small amount). Some of them had a one time use code but I didnt care too much I mean I had most the those on steam like HL1 and all its addons and HL2 and its two addons. They even had the price tag from compusa lol. Now thats a blue moon find for me but they are out there. It's a pain to get big boxes.. I don't really collect it, but I have some games from "back then" I really want in big box form. Games like the Command & Conquer and Worms series. Loved those back then, and still do. But displaying "regular" boxes don't look nice tho, so I want them big box.
The bad thing; I found 5 in 2 years time, with 1 coming from a conention.

I only collect sealed copies, plus some exceptions. Crazy difficult and often expensive. So far I got:
NASCAR Racing from Papyrus. I thought this one would be impossible to find but I did and for under 8 bucks too.
Jane's longbow 2 from EA. This one cost me nearly 70 bucks with shipping.
Darklight Conflict was sort of easy. Can't remember how much it cost me, but it wasn't very much
Nuclear strike from EA was like 14 bucks new. Without the shipping cost
Battle Isle the Andosia war cost me nearly 20 without the shipping
All the above were from a couple years back
The one I ordered a few days back is Jane's USAF bundled with a stratregy guide. So far the most expensive nearing 80 bucks and a seriously hard find
My eyes are now set on the original Silent hunter, Rogue squadron 3D, Falcon 4.0 binder edition, Falcon 3.0, US Navy fighters and many more.

I've been trying to look into some " _Print on Demand_ " stuff regarding big boxes, because it annoys me that people on ebay will take an extortionist amount of money just because it's in a big box. That and the possibility to have custom big box art is an interesting idea.

Okay was a wonderful game. Definitely enjoyed meeting you at Retropalooza in Dallas a few months back last year. Had a great time at the panel too. You're a stand up guy! Always enjoy the content.

It's old farts like us Metal Jesus that can support these old games. The wife and I are about to open a game store in our area and I'll be stocking PC / Vintage computer games. We've been running a flea market business for about two years and even have quite a few in there was well.

I'd also love to know what your most expensive PC / vintage game is? I think mine is my CIB copy of Ultima II for the Apple II.

MJR, you should do one on ps vita games. Physical vita games are getting extremely rare and pricy. I just got a vita and love those little boxes. It's a shame I got into it so late.

Best advice for storing them is probably don't keep them in the sun or somewhere they can get damp, like near a window.
