It really is absurd how high big box PC games have risen in value over the past ten years.
Really wasn't that long ago that collecting these was considered laughable by many collectors. Well WHO'S LAUGHING NOW.

Lol. Agreed. I got back into collecting my old lost big box pc games about 2 years ago and had to do quite a bit of work to find them all at reasonable prices. Hardest to find was the Wing Commander 3 film tin version but I got it and my collection is complete! Wish I had never gotten rid of my originals when I moved out at 18 though lol.

This really takes me back to when I was kid. I'll have to see if I still have my sealed shareware and retail games that were passed down to me when I was younger. I know I have a copy of Doom Shareware sealed, Prince of Persia (standard box), Red Baron, and some other early DOS games a lot of which were from Sierra. I've even got a lot of the old shareware compilation CDs like a few editions of 101 Games that had Duke 1, Duke 2, Commander Keen, Crystal Caves, and Corridor 7. It would be cool for me to be able to help out a collector by adding things to their collection that they may not have yet. Seeing this video brought me back to when I was just two years old and my dad was teaching me DOS commands so I could play games on the PC after he went to work because he wouldn't be there to do everything for me. DOS taught me how to read before age three and now 23 years later I'm working as a senior cyber-security analyst. Geeked at birth and such good memories.

AHH takes me back! There was something so special about receiving a game in a big box with beautiful artwork and all disks and manuals inside. Or visiting a game shop looking at all the different boxes deciding which one to buy. Maybe it's nostalgia talking but it's an experience you miss with a simple download. Of course at the end of the day it's all about the games though not the packaging.

I've never paid more than 20$ for a PC game, and own more than 300 CIB. Just don't buy anything from ebay, it's just stupid to pay these prices. The biggest part of my collection come from thrift stores, garage sales or flea markets. But I also bought lots from website like Craigslist. My most recent acquisition come from one of these website and I bought 71 CIB PC games (mostly from the 90s) for 80$. In the lot, there was game like Blood, Duke Nukem Atomic Edition, Mario's Missing Deluxe and Mortal Kombat 1 (the version with a Gravis Gamepad included). You just have to know where to check and most importantly, be patient. Sometime, I can't find a single game for many months. And if someone is trying to sell you a game that you really really want for a stupid price, just tell him to go fuck himself. Because that's how the price rise for all of us. Now that everyone know that a complete moron paid 800$ for Gabriel Knight, it's will be even harder to find a copy at a reasonable price.

And the box of Suspended brought back memories of being in a computer store and seeing those Infocom games on the shelf. I miss the box box PC packaging and how they tried to get your attention. I was born in 86. I didn't get my hands on a PC until about 1998. I remember going into stores though and looking at a lot of PC games and wanting to play them all. Box shapes would definitely catch my eye. I think my first true experiences until I got hooked with Counter-Strike and Team Fortress for HL1 was Outlaws, some of the Beavis and Butt-Head CD roms and I fondly remember Simpsons Virtual Springfield. Obviously StarCraft and Diablo 2 was a huge thing for me also. It all got crammed together by about 2000 when I hit high school. I have the Diablo 2 battlechest along with WOW. I have a small box copy of the HL1 pack that has Blueshift,Opposing Forces,Counter Strike and Team Fortress, so happy my brother found that. I didn't even play Maniac Mansion until after 2010 when my pal told me about the NES version. I now own a super nice version of it in the box, NES that is.

Man I used to love just wandering into a store and just browsing the shelves of the big box PC games. It was a much smaller gaming world back then.

Big box pc games are my favorite to collect. Finding anything decent in the wild seems more challenging than console games.

I remember the original Outrun that came out for ZX Spectrum having a music cassette with it with the original arcade music. The game also came on cassette which was a pain when you had to start it in the right place for the right level.

I started collecting big box pc games ten years ago.
They became harder and harder to find but I lucked out finding some still sealed. The most rare one I have is Wizardry Trilogy for Mac2 in mint sealed condition. I imagine these games may have been unwanted gifts that sat around and donated to thrift stores years later. I want to make a video soon showing my entire collection.

I watched someone in Goodwill open the plastic wrap and seal off of a big box Duke Nukem 3D and Mortal Kombat 2. I couldn't tell him to stop in time... it was a sad day. At least I still picked them up in great condition for $2.99 a piece

I remember that Suspended one being on shelves at the local game store we had back in the 80s. Wanted it just for the box, but I am sure the game was probably just another text adventure game, and lord knows I had plenty of those already. Used to stay up until 3 am making very little progress on those text adventuires, and on school nights, and then be tired as heck! My best treasure I still have is a sealed PC version of Zork II, I ended up with two of them back in the day and I found the extra one a few years back still sealed and perfect, no idea what it is worth now, hard to look up sealed version, there are plenty of opened ones though.

I personally would love to see more of these BB PC games videos. I didn't play them much but it's still fascinating.
PS. I find these "Stupidly Expensive" videos helpful.
    A. If I find one of these in the wild at a decent price even if I'm not familiar with it. I'll grab it because I saw it on here and know that it's likely worth a playthrough.
    B. I find things out about games in my collection. Or rather games that were once in my collection.....

Picked up some of these last year for the game room. Putting in a new addition and shelf to the Murray Game Museum just for PC Games as the boxes take up space.

Clothmaps, coins, vynil covers, weird shaped boxes. Man, they were packed. As a kid, in the 90s, I was pirating games because my family wouldn't spend that much money on games, since we had friends and such to pirate games for PS1 and PC.
Now you are lucky to even see a manual on modern games, let alone a coloured one. You get a flimsy paper about safety, heallth Very few games can come with some extra bonuses, like the Inside/Limbo compilation on PS4 has art cards and a poster, Slime Rancher has a colourful manual that acts as a lite encyclopedia of slimes and each expansion of Witcher 3 came with two decks of Gwent to play with friend along with tokens and rules. If you want cool shit, buy the collector's editions.

A great video, thanks! Ultima I is really hard to find complete and in good condition. Usually it’s more than $200. Fun fact, the Japanese Ultima I has a cloth map (I have it too). Also I’m lucky to have that small Ultima II grey box sealed, I wonder how much that is nowadays...

If it's for the IBM, the smaller grey box U2 will likely fetch north of $500 depending on condition. A sealed Apple II original release large box U2 went for over $1200 recently. The rarest one is the small black box.

Great video. Damn...I used to own a complete mail order copy of Doom 1...stupid me tossed out the box but I did sell the disks for about $80.00 online some years ago. I have a sealed copy of the one of the original Might and Magics around somewhere...I've found and sold many rare console games but not many big box PC titles. I need to get back into looking for them, it's a lot of fun. :)
