So jesse enkampf argues that the cross at the back was meant to offer back support. When Gracie bjj developed they wanted a smoother look at the back so they don't have a cross but loop the belt around. They have a superlick tie in the front because opponents can grab the belt. But usually people just tie the belt how they are taught. There are plenty of TH-cam videos showing different tying styles
