I used to tie my pants that same way you do but someone showed me a different way that I prefer more. I put the strings through both loops. Then you tie them together. It tightens it up better. Give it a try.

My favorite brand is called Ki International. They are based in California. I always cut off the ties on the jacket as we do throws and some violet grabs that can tear them; cutting them off avoids tearing the jacket instead of the ties. We have a very different way of tying obi, but I think we end up with the same result. Big difference, maybe, in tying obi is that the knot is supposed to be over the center of your ki, and the the rest of the obi is supposed to be angled upward slightly from that point.

Elastic waste band when you're over 40 is a must! I've tried the kind like you have in this video, and they were constantly slipping, untying, and terrible - never again. Elastic is king! Personally, I've mainly used Century - no reason other than readily available. Never had an issue. They last well enough, comfortable, and are just fine. Some of the newer gi pants have pockets. My next pair totally will... leave the house with keys, wallet, and phone in my gi pants, take them out before I hit the floor, and put them back in when ready to leave. Brilliant!

    • @Burvedys
      @Burvedys 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Jedem das Seine, perhaps. I'm over 50 now and elastic sucks at least a decade for me. YMMV :)

I usually wear a regular Everlast dogi because its the only brand available in stores here. When i was in Japan, a sensei gave me a Tokaido dogi as a "Goodbye" gift that i still havent use it. I also own a tailor made badass Black dogi made of canvas that my sensei gave to me.

As a taekwondo practitioner, I like the Korean brand Mooto (pronounced like mu-tou). They also make karate dogi as well, but I've never tried them.
As a cheaper but still high-quality brand, I like the USA brand BMA (Best Martial Arts Supply).
For taekwondo dobok under Kukkiwon style, our regular uniforms have V-neck collars, but there are special kata (poomsae) uniforms for competition that are open-jacket style like a regular dogi.

    • @dragonixbim5974

My judo gis are all Mizuno, TKD ITF dobaks are Adidas while my Chung Do Kwan dobak for testing and forms is a Tokaido. My karate gis are ProForce (lightweight for training, heavyweight for testing and kata) Once I get my shodan (a few years out on that) I will end up order another Tokaido or a Mizuno.

  • @Burvedys

My very first keikogi I have sewn myself. No kidding. Karate was prohibited in my country when I was a teenager but who cares (these Greedy 80s in the West at the time). I made it for myself. Then I helped my friend to make his own (he later shifted to Kyokushinkai and I to Goju-ryu from Shotokan and taekwondo). So our favored brand is a hand-made, perhaps. :) Need to check what brands I've got now.
As to my obi, I don't like ends of it hanging so I tug them over the belt from above down on each side of the knot (the knot is called reefing or square knot in sailing, by the way) and this is not my invention but I've seen some old Okinawan master doing this so I gave it a try and liked since. Not sure if it would be considered rude in Japanese dojo.

Well, I'm a Taekwondo Athlete, not a Karate Athlete. I'm basically here because I love the similarities (due to the history of Japan and Korea (Japans occupation of Korea etc) in regards to how and why Karate influenced the start of TKD), as well as the differences with the arts itself. And I love your channel. Anyways, my favorite brands for a Dobok (korean word for Gi) and Tee (korean word for Obi), are Mooto and Dae Do. Both lightweight, super comfortable, although expensive but really good quality.

Hello sensei! I see that in your video description you always put your filming gear, but never put your karate gear, i think it would be a nice addition to have the diferents models and brand of the karategi and obi (and maybe protections if its a sparring/kumite video) you are using in each video, keep up the good work! Its always nice to see how karate is all around the world!

Aloha! Have you made a video on how to alter your dogi for tournament requirements? Also perhaps explaining the different versions or styles....for example...kumite vs kata dogi, Japanese cut vs American cut. When I see national and international tournaments, the competitors always look so neat and refined, as far as their dogi is concerned. Personally, I prefer Hirota, Shureido, and Seishin for kata, and Tokaido for kumite. Thank you very much for all your videos. They're very informative and entertaining.

Interesting question to ask about the prefered Gi brand 😄 Here in Germany I know a lot of people wearing Kaiten (回天). I've got a Kaiten America, which was hugely popular here around 10 years ago. But I realized it doesn't really fit my body type, so I am now planning to switch to a Hayate Gi.
Edit: Kwon is also a very popular brand for Gi, but especially for Obi.

    Hello,
I used to wear a JK karategi for about 15 years. 2 years ago I wanted to buy a Shureido karategi, which I was told are the absolute best. But there was a huge waiting liste, even more so as I am 6ft4 tall, so instead I bought a Kamikaze (Spanish made) "Monarch" karategi, which I am very happy with.
If I had to change it, I would still go with a Shureido, or maybe the Seishin brand designed by Jesse Enkamp.

Was told, looking down, clockwise around waist for Korean styles, counter clockwise for Japanese styles. The direction of wrap determines which direction the knot points. The jacket is left over right for right handed, reverse if left handed; such that a sword when pulled from the waist will not get cought in you jacket.

I have two hand-me down Hirota that are a bit too small in the shoulders and the pants are a bit too short. However the material feels the best. When I next go to Japan I plan to buy two or even three more, but custom fit for me.
I had a heavy canvas KI dogi that was in taters from using it, obviously my favorite in my 20s when I was 84kg! I left my Century Iron Man dogis in the US -- the black one fit amazingly well and I wore it daily for many years. The Iron Mans were very well made and fit my large legs, but at the time I moved I thought my Tokaido was a better choice.
I brought the Tokaido dogi as my regular training dogi.
Your dogi is Hirota, but your obi looks like a Shureido. Is that so? What's the signifigance if it is not the same brand, and is there a prefered way of matching or mismatching these pieces or peieces over all?
    Thank you!

Hi Yusuke, been following you lately (since I recently got back into karate). Sizing dilemma: I used to have a flat stomach and my Do-gi used to fit perfectly. I was a size 5 and slim, and even after some minor shrinking, never had issues. it was 100% cotton heavy weight. That was many years ago. I just got a fuji size 5 heavy weight 100% cotton and seems kinda snug or (perfect) around my now larger gut. I'm hoping to loose some extra weight. but I'm concerned it will shrink and be too tight? most guys in my dojo wear light weight tiger claw cotton poly blend, and using a borrowed do-gi. It's much more comfortable for regular practice and less hot than what I've been used to. I'm debating a compromise and asking your advice: Should I get a medium weight cotton for regular use, a size bigger like a 7 and let it shrink into a better fit like a shrunk into 6 (till I shape up or even after)? or just get a poly blend ? what do you use/ recommend for regular training and practice which also looks sharp and feels right? Also, in general, if I'm trying a new do-gi and the inside jacket strings tie completely close together with extra room, shouldn't I get a larger size so after shrinkage, it wont be too tight/ the strings wont tie hanging on my body?

2:15 "This comes to the top": Left side on top. Isn´t there a historical reason for that? The (virtual) katana? I know that karate doesn´t use weapons nowadays, but the karate-dogi is traditional, isn´t it? Try to draw a katana when the right side is on top ;-)
