The giardino armonico recording of the four seasons is a historical milestone in the preformance of baroque music. After listenting to these guys it's difficult to enjoy anyone else perfomring it. Geniale.
maybe the most vivid and the experienced performance of it all. the start was a immediatly spoken such a timing. wonderfully. and i love the rasp and the brutalness in the sound. so good and nice. refreshning.

@jazztom86 "But I couldn't find one other with the same energy." Il Giardinao Armonico are famous for exactly that. I don't think they handle Bach or Handel particularly well, but for Vivaldi they're entirely peerless.
What an amazing group sound. Not sure if I like the double-timed continuo in the second movement-maybe a bit too kinetic for my taste, but it creates a compelling effect.
To each his own! Are you sure it’s quadrupled? I’m only doubtful because I’ve played the tutti violin part, which had pizzicato eighths/quavers. I’m not as familiar with the harpsichord, tbh
@Anacreon Yes, I know why they made that choice. But I think that they missed the big picture, which was the mood of the poem (at least how Vivaldi interpreted it). It’s from the perspective of someone sheltered from the rain. It’s about the comfort and peace of that shelter, rather than about the incessance of the rain. You can feel this with the slow harmonic rhythm and the warm repose of the melody. While I respect their choice, I find the double time to be so kinetic that it detracts from that sense of inner peace.
I haven't, but I'll look into it immediately. I certainly didn't mean what Bach and Handel I've heard them perform was poorly executed, only that nothing seemed to set them apart to recommend them over countless other recordings. Thanks for the recommendation.
@voltamore The first time I heard this recording was in the mid nineties... and as you say I have had a hard time enjoying any other performance of this piece.
@1969bartje Actually i believe its the oldest angle of all. they adapted these pieces from the originals Vivaldi wrote only with up to date instruments. Exquisite!

absolutely agree. Listening to the lute concertos by Vivaldi were an almost baffling experience for me, about 12 years ago.

The first movement sounds so slippery, windy and cold. The second feels like home. The third is probably a blizzard of hard strikes.

Have you heard the Handel op.6 complete recording? At least for me, it is astonishing, maybe different aproach, but it's indeed excelent.
