The Four Seasons (Italian: Le quattro stagioni) is a group of four violin concerti by Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi, each of which gives musical expression to a season of the year. These were composed around 1718−1720, when Vivaldi was the court chapel master in Mantua. They were published in 1725 in Amsterdam, together with eight additional concerti, as Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione (The Contest Between Harmony and Invention).
The Four Seasons is the best known of Vivaldi's works. Though three of the concerti are wholly original, the first, "Spring", borrows patterns from a sinfonia in the first act of Vivaldi's contemporaneous opera Il Giustino. The inspiration for the concertos is not the countryside around Mantua, as initially supposed, where Vivaldi was living at the time, since according to Karl Heller they could have been written as early as 1716-1717, while Vivaldi was engaged with the court of Mantua only in 1718.
They were a revolution in musical conception: in them Vivaldi represented flowing creeks, singing birds (of different species, each specifically characterized), a shepherd and his barking dog, buzzing flies, storms, drunken dancers, hunting parties from both the hunters' and the prey's point of view, frozen landscapes, and warm winter fires.
Unusual for the period, Vivaldi published the concerti with accompanying sonnets (possibly written by the composer himself) that elucidated what it was in the spirit of each season that his music was intended to evoke. The concerti therefore stand as one of the earliest and most detailed examples of what would come to be called program music-in other words, music with a narrative element. Vivaldi took great pains to relate his music to the texts of the poems, translating the poetic lines themselves directly into the music on the page. For example, in the middle section of "Spring", when the goatherd sleeps, his barking dog can be heard in the viola section. The music is elsewhere similarly evocative of other natural sounds. Vivaldi divided each concerto into three movements (fast-slow-fast), and, likewise, each linked sonnet into three sections.

The Four Seasons are such beautiful concerti. Vivaldi was a master of his time, it's a shame he wasn't given the recognition he deserved when he was alive. One of the best Baroque composers of all time imo
terrific work by the Recording Engineer; the acoustics are clean and spotless. Really allows you to hear the resonance in the body of each string instrument and the blend of the orchestra together is very appealing. This terrifically crisp recording clearly conveys the skill of the musicians and pleasingly demonstrates the artistry of the conductor and the orchestra.
it hard to know Vivaldi died poor and forgotten. Such a prodigy. I hope he is watching us weep to his amazing music now.

It's been years and years since I've heard the Four Seasons. This was so beautiful, especially the ending of Summer, brought me to tears, oh my goodness. And Spring gave me goosebumps. My dad loved Autumn. When he was in his twenties, he built a violin, now I see why it was his favorite. When I was in my early teens, I remember dancing to Autumn with him in the kitchen (which dancing isn't the easiest to it lol) and standing on his feet as he moved. He's been gone over 3y now, but this piece brought up a great memory.

During the pandemic lockdown, my dad would turn out to have stage four cancer. And as time progressed, his body started deteriorating to the point he became bed ridden. I would spend the days as a graduating student studying in my parents' room where he stayed. I would study and focus on work with this video and music watching the afternoon sunset through our window. I don't know why this music resonates with me but maybe, perhaps just the way the seasons have a cycle, life too has a cycle.
And there I was by my dad's side as this serenaded him and soothed my daily mourning.
He passed away 6th July 2021.
My grandmother has been a professional cellist for over 40 years and now finally at the age of 23 I am finally appreciating such beautiful music and what an amazing craft she had been doing I am now soaking in as much as I can from her ❤️

This was playing in the public library when my dad took me to attend a school-holiday activities workshop. It was about 20 years ago, we learnt how to build marionettes out of paper and I was introduced to stamp collecting. When I listen to this song the memory returns very vividly.

Since I was a child and heard this piece of Vivaldi's work I have always loved it. I listen to it often. It is my go to music to paint to, when I am sad and need to reflect, when the sun is out and I want to celebrate the Earth. To me, The Four Seasons is all that and more.

When I was a child I would visit my grandparents every summer and my cousins and I would dance around their basement to a cd of The Four Seasons. My cousins took ballet dance classes so they were actually good, but I would dance around wildly and pretend to be a magical forest fae, lol.

This expression is by far, in my humble opinion, superior to any I have heard in decades of listening. Back to vinyl LP days! The tempo on all of the four seasons is majestic! I've seen and heard many performances of the seasons over the many years. Many have been ensemble performances. The difference here is we have many more voices and a conductor which is masterfully giving us a tremendous expression of the seasons. Top of my playlist!

I saw this performed in a small baroque theatre off the Piazza San Marco in Venice, with my ex husband. It was during carnival time and many people were in 18th century costume, what a magical experience. My ex was not a fan of classical music so he sighed and fidgeted through it all but it still couldn't spoil it for me. ❤

Que soberba interpretação dessa orquestra aragonesa da peça mais linda da música barroca intitulada "As quatro estações" desse gênio chamado Antônio Vivaldi! Amo demais e me arrepio toda ao ouvi-la! Impossível não me emocionar toda vez que a ouço!!😍😍😍😍
La belleza de la música de las Cuatro Estaciones es que va más allá de las palabras. La capacidad de Vivaldi para transmitir emociones y sensaciones a través de sus melodías es verdaderamente asombrosa. Cada movimiento nos sumerge en un mundo diferente, nos hace sentir la brisa de la primavera, el calor del sol en verano, el viento que sopla suavemente en otoño, e incluso nos hace experimentar la sensación del frío invierno.
Personalmente, considero que Las Cuatro Estaciones de Vivaldi son una de las obras más fascinantes y conmovedoras en el mundo de la música clásica. Su poder para conectar con las emociones y transportarnos a diferentes momentos y lugares es algo que pocos compositores pueden lograr. Es una experiencia musical que todo amante de la música clásica debería tener el privilegio de disfrutar.
