It's not Damascus style. The metal isn't folded over and over. It's more like a sandwiched steel like a samurai sword. Hard inner core with a softer outside to help with shock.
Finally pulled the trigger on this knife. Been eywing for over a year. Wanted a knife with a kydex sheath, blade about 4-6 inch. Not too big or too small.
I absolutely love mine. ! I bought quite a few now. Kind of like a poor man's Fallkniven ! Longer than a Fallkniven S1, and lighter and more manuverable than an A1. Very similar steel. I like the grip better on the Cold Steels, but think the Fallkniven handles might be more durable, and last longer. The SRK in San Mai are half the price of the Fallkniven A1. Not saying they are better, but very similar.
Thank you for sharing this video with us. I just purchased this specific SRK along with an SK5. The San Mai has a super sharp false edge where the SK5 is very dull. I just subscribed to your channel!
I have black version with aus 8 steel made in Japan been eyeing these for a while. Will definitely be on my Radar when I go to SMKW in October!! Great Video!!
Hi, I stumbled onto your video and since I own one of the VG-1 SRK's i found it very interesting. I also own a bunch of other cold steel knives including a couple of the old Bush Rangers in AUS-8A.About 26 years ago I made a really nice custom leather sheath for one of them, which I would love to show you. I showed it to Lynn Thompson back then and he was impressed but he said that if they made sheaths of that quality they would have to double the price of the knife. this was back in the days before Kydex.
SRK5 6 inch they come different colored handles my is what they call earth a mixture of tan and green and I added some soft loops this way I can just slip it on through my second backup belt and it works just fine.I really enjoyed your review looking forward to see a follow-up on this awesome blade😊
Krayton is basically closer to old school car tire rubber. It was used on the older SRK in Carbon V and some others. Kray-EX is a different material CS made up. Just like Kydex, the good stuff and Secure- Ex, the edge killer CS material the sheathes are now made of. Losing your 3V SRK was a bit of a glitch, 3V is roughly twice as strong and tough as as a standard billet carbon steel. 1/4 of 1095CV is as strong and tough as 1/8 inch of 3V, if the heat treat and temper is properly done. I have collected and used CS since 1987.
The pre GSM 3V were done in Italy, but the new ones are made in Taiwan. I have one of the new ones in 3V. I'm not sure about the older ones, but the new 3V are a flat saber grind, not hollow ground. I think the San Mai would be a better cutter. The 3V isn't bad, but I'm not overly impressed. I don't hate it or anything, but I just have many other knives I like better.
RK custom kydex has a kydex sheath specifically for the San mai version. Let me know if the handle loosens when you work that puppy out this weekend. I’ve seen that the cpm 3v versions loosen inside the handle.
I absolutely luv the Cold Steel SRK Series. My two favorite SRK Models in my Collection are the 3V SRK and my SK5 SRK-C. Great Blade! :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)
I really like knives and I love the expensive ones but I will never take them out into the woods. Hard to justify beating the crap out of the knife you spent over $100 for.
The older Japanese made version was much better but the new version is still awesome. The VG10 core is a little chippy but no more than Fallkniven. The old VG1 core is softer but better. Bonded much better as well.
hi! I don't know to much about knifes, so would be great if you would make videos about different materials, witch one is good, witch one is not so good... witch one is best... different brands etc. there is not to much information about these things out there. thank you. also, I'm knew on your channel. all the best.

Get the CPM3V....I have both san mai and cpm3v. I even have the old school san mai made in Japan and I still think the cpm3v is better for the woods.
@@jonathandiamond6801 I have the 3v version as well, it's my favorite outdoors knife by far

I would rather say Fallkniven is an "overpriced SRK".

Thanks brothrr
I have heard the Italy location has issue with QC. Taiwan is doing excellent work. Just bought one in 3v.

I want to get the sk5 and do a vs battle till it breaks haha
The top is a false edge. It is for back cut fighting.

Where's the SRK sk5 vs San mao video?

Thanks for the heads up brother
Vegvisir Creations Cold Steel SRK Kydex does custom sheaths for the SRK!
How does this steel handle high humidity and or a salt water environment?
It’s stainless, so very well
This is a great knife!!!
Thanks man check out my new video tonight on the GSO 5.1

my san-mai is written with japan, and my tip is broken - love this thing as an apple slicer

The full tang tang is too thin I think. What is the other one you use on comparison? That tang is wide more durable.
How do you loosen the sheath up? Mine is sooo tight. It gets tight halfway in just like you said then it doesn’t give a click but it does lock it.
Put Vaseline on your blade where it rubs 😊 when things are too tight a little lube always helps 😂

I have the older Japanese made version of the SRK. It's a solid knife.
I have one. Gotta get a leather sheath for it.
I have one in 3v they a great knives
