    The Recon is a beast and looks to be very capable. I own the OSS with Kraton handle for home defense. I saw the Cold Steel video where the guide killed the Cape buffalo. I was sold on it!

    I think you missed one. The drop forged bowie is an excellent combat knife. The balance makes it so nimble that you'd swear it was half the weight. The steel doesn't hold an edge the greatest, but makes up for it in extreme toughness! I don't think it's the best wood chopper, but it's outstanding at butchering. 10" of blade is pretty nice too

    I like all of those but the last one is probably my favorite. I love all my Cold Steel knives, but their more recent Securex sheaths have glass fiber in the plastic and when the edge touches the inside of the sheath it immediately dulls the blade. CRKT fixed blade knives have had fiber in their sheaths for years. Glock field knives and Morakniv knives do not have glass fiber in their sheaths. Thanks for showing us these!

    SRK, search and rescue knife. Black bear classic is lethal! The recon scout is one of my favourite knives. The R1 is great, but the sheath let's it down, why did they put the retention strap on the edge of the blade? Should be on the spine side! The 3v version of the recon scout is very expensive in the UK. The handle is not coffin shaped, it is a Japanese style of handle. And brilliant!

  • @johnroberts6695
    @johnroberts6695 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I have a brand new *Recon Tanto®* (Carbon V) and a *Recon Tanto* (SK5) that's great. Have used neither, but you should see there workmanship on the latter. The ground edges are perfect. Hephaestus, himself, could not have made it better, and it feels superb in the hand.
    I don't have a Randall, but I do have two *SOG Agency®* knives with the most beautiful finishes a man could desire! I can't bring myself to use either as they, too, are out of production. As for the sub-hilt knife, you're lucky to have yours. I have a couple of *Cold Steel OSS* knives and look, people can scream all they want about AUS8A steel, but the OSS is not an everyday EDC. And as someone who loves and uses CTS-XHP for my EDC, there ain't nuthin’ wrong with AUS8A knives. Back in the day, before all the powdered knife steels were the rage, people carried and used AUS8A all the time and didn't complain at all except that it rusted if it wasn't cared for. And no one said, “my damn knife needs to be sharpened all the time!” (They didn't even say that about their Buck 420HC knives which, I think, are still in production and which have “medium” edge retention. Some of these Buck Hunter® knives have even killed black bears.) The *Recon Scout®* is a knife I'd love to have, but I don't like Kraton rubber grips on a knife that expensive.

    Great locks, won't close on fingers.
    Not that we ever put pressure on the top of the blade that would force it to close, anyway, but the lock is a sales point, even if it fixes a problem that wasn't there in the first place.
    Now, moving on, lay the open knife on it's side on the table, with the blade extending past the edge of the table.
    Now apply progressive weight to the blade and see how fast the joint (or steel?) fails!!
    Much of the time it is in use, there is lateral pressure on the blade but no one seems to test and quantify the results of that one.
    Not on any knives is this tested.
    Why not?

    • @RexApplegate
      @RexApplegate ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both viewpoints are fair, but context is needed. A pure bred fighting knife choice will depend on fighting style and circumstances, and for that matter so will a combat and utility knife hybrid.
      I don't own any you guys listed besides a Tai Pan, but my favorite go anywhere do anything fixed knife is the 60's buck 122/124, not very different from the video choices, and if I had to pick a fixed blade knife to take to confront violence it'd be the Tai Pan. And I EDC a 5.5 tanto for trades work. All great knives but fundamentally feature very different schools of thought by the discerning users who actually field them.

  • @MrMZaccone
    @MrMZaccone ปีที่แล้ว

    The Loveless Style Black Bear is not a "drop point" it's a clip point. The balance on this copy is all wrong and too handle-heavy because Loveless tapered his tangs and that left just enough weight forward to improve momentum in the cut. The Black Bear is also "sharpened" to use the term loosely, inconsistently at anywhere from 20 dps in the body of the knife to nearly 30 dps near the point. This makes it a nightmare to actually sharpen.

    • @CrazySharp

      @@CrazySharp » Yeah, but the present steel is SK-5, not AUS8A, and the AUS8A I have in my Rajah II has done very well in chopping and cutting. I have models in AUS8A and 10A and both have performed admirably.
      But I also have two Recon Tantos, one with Carbon V and one in SR-K, both unused. Are they about the same? I'm told not to use the former because it's a collector's item. What do you think?
