Very good video. There's just one specification I would like to have seen. That is Tractive effort. I believe that the starting tractive effort is about 200,000libs. This is astounding, if you consider the Union Pacific Big Boys were rated at 135,000lbs. I saw a train moving through Fremont, Ohio, westbound on the Toledo Line, from Bellevue. One AC44C6M on the point, and another one as the DPU. My wife and I both counted cars and we both came up with 283 cars on this train. That's right, 283, not 183, pulled by only 2 units. They didn't go very fast, probably no more than 25-30mph. But they kept it moving without stalling, even though Fremont has grades from either direction, meaning that trains first need to be under control while descending, and then to have enough power to climb out. Even average size trains are descending and climbing at the same time. Those AC44C6M's are mutants!
There are other railroads that used these locomotives. CN: rebuilt from CN/BNSF Dash 9s and are equipped with K3L horns UP (classified C44ACM): rebuilt from UP Dash 9s and are equipped with K3HA horns BNSF also did Dash 9 rebuilds on their former ATSF Dash 9s, numbered 599-619. They were actually rebuilt to AC44C4M (4 powered axles in A1A-A1A wheel arrangement like ES44C4). Note BNSF 599 is former ATSF 666.
I think I like the C6Ms just as much as their Dash 9 counterparts considering they work just as good as them. My favorite Dash 9s come from NS and rebuilding old power is way better than scrapping it. Can’t ever go wrong with most NS rebuilds as they’ve worked really well, can’t say the same for the Dash 8.5s and AC44C6CF however:(. Dash 9s have been the backbone of NS for many years at this point and I’m glad the C6Ms are ready to take the title once they’re all retired.
