  • NS 8520 was a one-off C44-9W rebuild using electrical equipment from CAF. She had a short career on Norfolk Southern post-rebuild, owing to several mechanical issues, and it's because of those issues that the AC44C6CF conversion was never repeated. Now the locomotive is owned by the Knoxville Locomotive Works and is apparently still going as a lease unit.

I've seen her countless times on MNPPR, MNPCB, and others on UP'S system around Fremont Nebraska

A little more to it than that. Yes, CAF supplied inverters and sourced traction motors. But the engine was modified with third party injectors and common rail fuel system in an effort to achieve EPA Tier 2 emissions. Also, a new control system from TMV. Ultimately, too many experiments on one locomotive. After going to KLW it was noticed the engine was swapped out and she is still running today, most recently on UP.

the dash-9's and dash-8's are my favorite, but using electrical equipment on a diesel locomotive would not combine together in my opinion. also weird trains with strange designs. but they are short-lived and very unreliable like the budd metroliner, class M-1 steam turbine locomotive, GE U50's run by Southern Pacific and Union Pacific and the GE BQ23-7 locomotives that runs on the Seaboard Coast Line and CSX

I've heard of all four designs you've mentioned, and the BQ23-7 was the subject of an earlier mini-documentary.

Is it still running around pulling trains or dpu service?

I low key want this as a DLC on Horseshoe Curve, but I also think it would be kind of pointless.

And I can't imagine NS would want anything to do with 8520, especially since she's not their property anymore. I wouldn't get the route either way because I don't care for those US heavy freight routes, and I'm skeptical of Skyhook following the Cane Creek fiasco.

Eh, they actually earned a fair amount of goodwill from me with Horseshoe Curve. Early preview got negative feedback so they delayed it heavily to do a ton of work. Did it still have issues? Of course, but they fixed most of the big ones early, and they actually had someone go through and apologize to like every negative review on Steam. So yeah, still could be better but it's pretty good in its current state (obviously not really worth it if you dislike US freight though) and I give major points for how Skyhook handled it, especially compared to DTG and Rivet.
