    1. Don’t take them to a dog park
    2. Don’t reinforce cute behaviors as puppies but bad behaviors for adult dogs ex: jumping
    3. Don’t give them raw hides or jerky
    4. Don’t encourage rough play
    5. Don’t feel like you have to tip-toe around them
    6. Don’t allow them to grow chubby fast
    7. Don’t leave them unsupervised in an uncontained area
    8. Don’t only practice crate training when you leave the home

      I believe that it’s okay to let your dog know, when it has crossed a line. It’s okay to yell once to let them know that they either hurt you, or did something really bad. But when you have yelled, turned your back or whatever, don’t continue the punishment. Your dog doesn’t always know what is right and wrong so don’t ever punish a dog that hasn’t learned the correct behaviour.
      An example is that I often have to yell once and grab my puppy’s collar when he bites because he becomes a demon and NOTHING stops him, so I have to stop him to not reinforce bad behaviour. Believe me, I’ve tried every technique there is. When he is calm, I let him be free again and give him something else to bite on. But don’t give him treats just after he bit you, he’ll soon catch on to that.
      But if he jumps up on me or tries to jump up when I’m in a chair, I don’t punish him. I say no in a calm tone and give him something else to do on the floor. Because he hasn’t learned not to jump yet.
      Remember:
      Correct punishment is always as he is doing wrong or latest is one second later. The punishment should be what another puppy or his mother would do. This is dog language and much easier to understand.
      Wrong punishment is what will make your dog feel threatened, vulnerable or even hurt. And don’t ever punish after the action. Your dog probably doesn’t know what it’s doing wrong, so don’t try to make it understand after the action.

      Totally disagree. I almost lost my dog to a Rottweiler at a dog park. One minute play was all good, next minute, the Rott turns on her, flips her and has her by the next. As she is yelping, all the other dogs go into pack mentality and start to charge the situation. Making matters worse *I* was the one to leave the park, not the lady with the aggressive dog. Rachel is talking about people who do not train their dogs and then letting that dog teach YOUR dog bad behavior or stupid owners who don't do everything they can to keep all dogs in the park safe...Looking at your phone in a dog park???....HELLO!! Have a play date with ONE friend and ONE dog whom you trust.

      Training your dog to not be on the couch is an absolute preference. Some people in my family think a dog should never be on the couch but yet I allow my standard poodle to be on there because I have hardwood floors and she doesn't always want to go in the bedroom to her bed. She wants to be involved in what's going on. If you want your dog to behave while on the couch put a little bed or a blanket of theirs on one corner and that that's the only place they can be.

    I agree so much with what you said about not taking them to dog parks and whatnot. My dad's pit bull was maybe 5 months old when they were at their local dog park and he was attacked by a Very dominant uncontrolled Husky. The owner just laughed. He had serious issues with other dogs after that and it took a Lot of training and time and he got better and can be introduced properly to another dog with no issues. Dog parks are for older dogs that are already at least somewhat socialized and trained, in my opinion.

They get along with cats, foster dogs/puppies/kittens, etc. they're amazing but when they get to a dog park people think "Oh the big bad pit bull is here." when their dogs are acting like crazies and they do nothing about it. lol Not for me!

    When our Labrador was a puppy she always softly chewed on our hands. When she chewed to hard we would say ouch and go away. Our dog trainer said that it is good to do that because they learn how hard is to hard.

My daughters getting a Golden in a couple weeks (pup is still too young) but she (daughter) keeps in touch with the breeded (photos, updates etc). She has already purchased supplies, toys etc. She's a very diligent mother to her 3 and 5 year old daughters and I know she'll follow suit with her new baby girl pup. Im so glad I found you and am forwarding to her, she will too. Thanks so much!

    Rachel! Your timing with this vid couldn't have been more perfect! I'm bringing home a puppy very soon! I haven't been able to find an answer to this, but how should I manage my puppy when it still needs to finish shots. As far as being around our other dog or going out in public. Thankyou!!

    • @tarynlol7228
      @tarynlol7228 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      My opinion: only let them use them the restroom or walk where strange dogs dont frequent. As far as your dog that should be fine as long as they have all vaccines and such

    • @RachelFusaro
      @RachelFusaro  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      My pleasure love! Congrats on your new pup, how exciting 😍
      While I agree puppies should not go in public places frequented by other dogs before vaccines, I DO think (if done carefully) that exposing your puppy to new places can be hugely beneficial
      Examples; before Fin was vaccinated, we took him to Barnes and noble (it’s dog friendly here) jsut for a short trip!
      Home Depot, but made a little blanket nest in the shopping cart so his paws didn’t touch ground
      And started leash training in my backyard!
      Hope that helps!

    I've just found your channel, and I really like the way you talk about the smaller nuanced aspects of raising a dog. I haven't found any trainers online who talk about the "global" skills and behaviour shaping. More specific commands and addressing certain issues.
    I agree with you 100% that it's better to avoid free play puppy classes where the pups are encouraged to just clobber each other and run around. I understand they have a valuable purpose for people who don't know any other dogs to socialise their dogs with - but puppy obedience classes are (in my opinion) usually a better option for most dog owners. Because it teaches your dog to focus on you around the distraction of other dogs. Meaning, they'll still get used to calmly greeting and seeing other dogs, without the association of "see dog MUST BOMBARD".
    I personally think it's better to teach your dog that outings (walks, parks, etc.) are for interaction with YOU and shared experiences with YOU. Then actual rampant play with other dogs can be done with dogs you already know, or dogs you get to know by seeing their owners regularly at parks and so on.

    Rachel, Great advice, thanks. I'm an old guy just retired and now that I have more time on my hands I just brought home an 8-week old Goldendoodle puppy. I lost my Labradoodle a few years ago to cancer. I love your videos but I'm wondering if I harmed my dog with the dry food I fed him his entire life. This raw food is new to me. Is a mix of dry and raw recommended? Thanks!! Keep up the good work. -Jim

    It's true that puppies are impressionable. I took my puppy to puppy playtime at Petco because I wanted to socialize him with other dogs. He learned to hump other dogs from another puppy. I don't completely regret it though because he's so friendly to every dog now.

    I just watched a video of a professional dog trainer that said you need to let your puppy bite you and your clothes but you have to say "OUCH!" And not pull away, wait for them to move away.. if you don't do this they won't learn about the strength of their bites and that it's really important to let them do this lol.

    • @elizabethrouse4182

    And great comment about not leaving your pup unsupervised in the backyard because I had no issues until I got a puppy and oh surprise! He found all the peach pits in my yard from the peach tree. So every morning I was on poop and peach pit patrol! 🤣
