How to REALLY clean your CARPET AGAIN | Same Rug - New Deep Cleaning Methods - One Year Later

  • Last year we found a way to deep clean our 8' x 10' carpet that had been well used by our three children and slobbery dog. It’s been 15 months since the last deep clean and the rug is due again! Watch this video to find out what homemade solution and methods we used this year to get rid of the nasty stains!
    IT’S JUST SCIENCE!
    The homemade mixture works so well because it has several stain removing components each with a different capacity to remove different kinds of stain ingredients. Since we don’t know what stains are on the carpet, this covers a great array of removal mechanisms shown below:
    1. Oxygen Bleaching - Hydrogen Peroxide in the presence of organic material (especially under low pH) form highly reactive free radicals, which are very strong oxidants. This helps to break down colored "things" (pigments, etc) once the sodium percarbonate (OxiClean) mixes with water and produces hydrogen peroxide.
    2. Degreasing - Dish Soap like (Dawn or Method) is a great stain remover because it solubilizes the fatty portions and makes them miscible in water so they can be washed away. The ingredients Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Decyl Glucoside, and Lauryl Glucoside all contribute to solubilization.
    3. Particulate removal - mud/dirt that gets tracked in from outside and builds on the carpet. Strong ions (phosphate, zeolites) are good for helping absorb dirt molecules and solubilize them. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid tetrasodium salt (EDTA) is a nice, useful ligand which further helps remove soil.
    Here's an interesting link that further explains: www.compoundchem.com/2015/06/...
    Solution Ingredients:
    1. (2 cups) Glass Cleaner (pH ~ 8) - Water, 2-Butoxyethanol, Surfactants, Ammonia aqueous, 1-Methoxy-2-propanol, Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid tetrasodium salt, Sodium Hydroxide, Dyes
    2. (1 cup) White Distilled Vinegar (pH ~3)- 5% 0.8M Acetic Acid (I greatly reduced the quantity of this ingredient in the mixture this year and might replace with fabric softener next year)
    3. (1 heaping scoop) OxiClean (pH~10) - Sodium Percarbonate
    4. (4-5 good squirts) Method Dish Soap (pH ~ 7.5) - Water (Aqua), Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Lauramine Oxide, Decyl Glucoside, Lauryl Glucoside, Ethanol, Fragrance Oil (Parfum) Glycerin, Methylisothiazolinone, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Sodium Chloride
    5. Warm Water (After adding ingredients above, add warm water to 5 gallon bucket)

    If I may point out, the ammonia in the glass cleaner is a neutralizer. It neutralizes the acid in the vinegar, rendering it pointless. :) Leave out the glass cleaner. It's just basically an over priced mix of detergent and ammonia.

    I just spent three hours this morning cleaning an area rug that is probably ten years old and has never been cleaned. To compound issues, my dog has had several accidents on it which accounts for the terrible smell and stains on the back. I first sprayed the back with diluted vinegar and let it sit. I then took my pressure washer with a mix of orange cleaner, dish soap and laundry detergent. I let the saturated carpet sit for twenty minutes and then hosed off with clean water. I used a jet vac to extract most of the water and finished with several passes using my Hoover carpet cleaner. It’s currently drying in the FL sun. I don’t know if I can get rid of the smell though even though its a lot cleaner.

I'm not sure if my technique is better as I'm sure there are many different professional methods, but it's effective if you're willing to put in the man power. I'm going to try the soaking method with your homemade solution on an indoor outdoor rug. But I also have a couple of nice, but aged, wool oriental rugs which I want to clean, and I noticed you advise not using your recipe on wool. What is the ingredient that must be avoided? Do you have any suggestions for wool rugs?

    • @HandzforHire
      @HandzforHire  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Very cool. I give the warning because Oxiclean can damage the wool fibers and remove coloring from the rug. I've read that they sell a wool soap that can be used with diluted vinegar in warm water. Another option is to call a local professional and ask what they use to clean wool rugs. I think a professional usually charges about $5 per square foot, but if you ask for pricing and what chemicals they use, then you might have your DIY answer. I hope that helps!

      It's actually a solar cover for our spa. It's like a heavy duty blue bubble wrap. Since we live in Florida, I don't use the solar cover often and it's a good mat for cleaning the rugs in the driveway.

      I just went over and felt it and it feels soft. The carpet is 5 years old and I’ve only done this deep cleaning twice. Most of the time I just vacuum once a week or once every other week. Hope that answers your question okay!

    PLEASE HELP!!! I can't get all the soap mixture out. I don't know how many times I've rinsed it both top and bottom. It's a pretty low pile rug not as tall as yours. I used the same exact measurements that you listed. But I still see small white sides when I rinse with water, and MAJOR suds when I squeegee.

      @HandzforHire  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Emily, I’m sorry you’re having a challenge with the soap removal. Maybe try turning the rug over giving it a really good rinse and then rinse once more right side up. It will come out. I promise. Try to start from a corner of the rug and work towards the opposite corner so that the soap all gets worked in one direction. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

      An extra rinse with a vinegar/water solution should help with any residual suds.

      @emilystubbs5650 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rosannecoric Oh very goooood idea!! I bet you're right, because I know vinegar by itself gets soapy stuff off other things.
      But I'm going to be real honest - I don't know if I'm EVER going to clean my rug like this again. At least not one this size because my lord!
      I mean... even if the vinegar/water rinse saved me the extra hour+ of trying to get the suds out. The process of trying to get 7x12 wet rug onto my little outdoor wagon and balance to transport to the back patio. Then trying to drape it over furniture to dry. All while keeping it from touching the ground or getting dirty again...just about killed me. It was physically so much harder than I anticipated lol.
      So just a tip from me, anything larger than a 4x6 needs two people or "man" muscles.

      I believe so! The trick is to try to get as much water out as possible once you've done the final rinse. Air under it helps but it should dry fairly well in the sun. Both times I did it, I got a late start and the sun wasn't on my side. The first time, I didn't have air under it, and I eventually pulled it inside damp. I used a hair dryer and the low humidity of my air conditioning to finish the job. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

      Hi Liz, ours has synthetic fibers. I would not use this method on wood or natural fiber rugs. At some point I'd love to do a video on wool rugs. You'd probably have to simplify your solution by using a water vinegar mixture. Here's an article I found that seems to have some good tips. www.rugknots.com/blogs/professional-cleaners/how-to-clean-a-wool-rug Good luck!!

  • @callycamp1576
    @callycamp1576 ปีที่แล้ว

    well, there are videos that show how professionals clean expensive carpets. You blocked all the dirty water from leaving , so none of your methods were very effective. Next time, allow the water to flow out of the carbet. You can use a combination of methods . Never use dish soap on carpets, the soap actually attracts more dirt. Rinse it out you say...well, maybe, but getting all the soap out is not truely going to occur.
