Levi says not to let emotions into it, but it was his emotions towards Erwin that steered his decision. He couldn't bear to bring Erwin back to hell like he said. He wanted Erwin to have peace.
@@zegsi364 No, it was made pretty clear further in following eps that he didn't decide that Armin should live, but rather that Erwin should die, out of personal compassion for Erwin. Not only did Levi admit that and make that clear to Armin and the rest, but even Floch and the rest of the military higher ups back within the walls where questioning that same irrational decision to sacrifice the commander over a lower ranked soldier, and Floch was completely right in that Levi, Eren & Mikasa treated the titan serum as if it's their own and made a emotionally-driven decision with it, rather than taking everyone else into account. Of course, since Erwin put the decision to use the serum under Levi's authority, no one can ultimately go against Levi's choice.
I’m glad they chose Armin. Even though I’m sure the writer was obviously going to choose armin but made it this whole dramatic scene. But if Erwin would’ve lived everyone would hate him because he basically sent everyone to die imagine al those people’s family they would be upset because he survived but everyone else died. Also Erwin wanted to die there even if he wouldn’t get to see the basement. He rather die than stand upon all those dead bodies we saw before that died for his own dream. He couldn’t carry all that anymore.
Since watching you guys there’s been a few episodes I had been looking forward to that I feel were the most impactful in the series in terms of shock factor. Eren being eaten and his reveal as a titan, squad Levi being killed, Annie’s reveal, Ymir revealing herself, Reiners confession, Eren controlling the titans, discovering what happened to Grisha Yeager and these past two episodes. Been really fun watching this journey with you all. I can’t wait to see the rest!
A clarification for everyone. I think some ppl misunderstood that moment when Erwin raised his hand. He didn't "reject" the injection. He's having near-death hallucinations (raising his hand to ask his father-professor about other humans outside the walls). That's the only reason, his only fuel to keep moving forward and be an effective commander. The moment he knew the truth about this world, we would never know what he'll be like. Great reaction you guys, I really enjoyed it :D
I'm not sure if you guys noticed cause he was always in the background but the guy who saved hange has literally been in the show since the survey corps have been introduced. He has been with hange through everything and we've actually seen him loads of times throughout the show but because he was always just there next to hange you may not have noticed him and I just thought it was worth pointing out that Moblit is a character who has been a part of the story and actually as close to eren as the original levi squad throughout the whole series
I love the influence of Kenny's last words on Levi's decision Everyone had to be drunk on something to keep pushing on, everyone's a slave to something... Erwin was driven by his dream to prove his father's theory, sacrificing countless comrades in the name of humanity when really it was for more selfish reasons. In the end, he sacrificed himself and his dream to give their side a fighting chance. In doing so he is also set free from his burden and is no longer "slave" to his dream. Levi recognizes this; when he tells Erwin to give up on his dream and die, Erwin smiles and thanks Levi. Similarly, if Erwin's motivation is the truth that the basement probably holds, his dream (and his purpose, if you will) ends with the basement. For Armin, the thing he is drunk on, in Kenny's terms, extends past Erwin's. It extends beyond the basement, and beyond victory in war - the sea, and the freedom and hope for the future that it represents.
Erwin: the one who will later be remembered as a hero Marlo: the one who wanted to be a hero and couldn't Levi: the one who was a hero and failed Armin: The one who wasn't afraid to be a hero Great reaction btw :D
After taking great damage, the shifters experience temporary memory loss just like when Riner forgot about what was going on when his head blew up, so when Berth woke up and was asking everyone for help, he forgot about the war and he was asking them as his friends, which makes it even sadder..
This shows despite being on death' door, he was still trapped in his nightmare. Finding the truth is everything Erwin was, it was his hell even though he walked through it willingly. Levi realized that and let him go
In Manga Levi Was Looking At The Erwin All The Time And Others Were With Armin …. This Shows How Levi Respect And Love Erwin Smith ….. He Is The Most Emotional Character In Attack On Titan but Only In His Heart Not On His Face …. 😞
You guys are so fun to watch as reactors! lol. In terms of the choice, I agree that it should have been Armin. For two reasons: 1.) needing to be "drunk on something," and 2.) needing to think outside the box. They kept flashing back to Kenny saying "everyone had to be drunk on something." Well, they are on the verge of finding what Erwin has been seeking, and Erwin himself said he didn't know what he would do after he found it. Armin on the other hand still has a love for the outside world and a desire to explore and know it. But more importantly, regarding number 2, saving Erwin would have been the "conventional" choice, but as Armin said just before they found Reiner in the walls, if we don't think beyond conventional logic, then we can never gain the upper hand. The need to go beyond conventional thinking has been a theme since season 1. So yeah, Armin was the right choice, but RIP the most goated commander who ever lived.
I appreciate Sam feeling bad about Bert dying. Ik he's hated because of what he has done(which is completely understandable) but a lot of people just seem to brush off the fact that he had no choice either. Bert's death was indeed sad as well Rest easy Bertholdt
Agreed. Also, it seems like Bert forgot who he was before getting eaten by Admin. He looked at his previous friends and smiled at them thinking that they were going to save him. It seemed like he forgot what he had done.
I remember watching season 2 episode 12 when reiner and berthlodt are surrounded by titans and thought that that's the end for them and I felt sad coz I feel at that time they're just being used by the real enemy especially when bertholdt said "somebody find us" sort of thing
bro he did have a choice, idk why so many people fail to see this, he chose to kill thousands of people and his own friends for his familys safety, it sucks that his family was held hostage but he still made that choice, which was kind of a messed up choice, to put your family over the lives of thousands and your own friends, so he wasnt as innocent as yall make him to be, not only that but if all 3, including rainer and annie had allied with paradise, they would have stood a chance to bring down marley and save the other eldias if not their families, marley wouldnt have stood a chance with only 2 titans, and the intel from those 3, but they chose their families over everyone, and before u say anyone would do that, i know i wouldnt. I love my family but i would never be able to kill thousands to save them, and watch my own friend get eaten as he cries for mercy
13:10 For us, he is Erwin Smith but for new recruits, he is just their commander who got their entire squad killed and apparently that was his plan. So it's obvious, anger would be your first reaction if you survived through all of this (In that moment he learned there's no glory, no meaning behind all this, just misery and despair)
Emotional roller-coaster to say the least. I think the Colossal is more useful just because I can't imagine the Armored Titan beating the Colossal in a fight lol. And I agree watching Bertoldt die was still hard to watch even tho he's killed so many ppl. Greatest anime ever! Yeah I said it....
Floch and Levi called Erwin a devil because he was a leader who was able to send soldiers to die and kill when humanity dependant on it. He became a monster and pushed his humanity out when it was needed. Floch knew in order for humanity to survive they needed a devil to fight devils. In the larger narrative Erwin's death was fair because he himself send many people to die and told them to give up on their own dreams for the survival of humanity when in fact he was only looking to fulfill his own dream. That's why he felt like a fraud episode's ago before he had to lead his men into a suicide attack. He realized he had to give up on his dreams like he had forced so many others to do so. As he was never able to achieve his dream he was able to die true to his words and honorably. Although I get it, Erwin deserved to know the truth after everything they had fought and being so close. Erwin was definitely the better option between Armin and him. Erwin had the mental capacity of Armin, he had the leadership, and was able to suppress his humanity to achieve victory. In the end Erwin did deserve to die in peace and let the new generation, Armin, take over. Armin is basically a baby Erwin as he has shown the ability to suppress his humanity and has the intelligence.
i mean, when armin makes plans, they succeed and with minimal casualties. when erwin makes plans, the casualties always number in the double digits. every one of erwins plans have always been "half of our force is a suicide charge, and the other half is actually fighting, while also probably still being on a suicide charge". meanwhile armin disables the colossal titan with one singular combat loss(several casualties to the transformation, but that wasnt avoidable), all while also dealing with the armored titan. erwin has experience and gets results, but pyrrhic victories are not the mark of a brilliant strategist. i love erwin but i legit think the guys capabilities are overhyped, and armin is just better than erwin in every regard but confidence.
@@auqanova yes I agree with that. I still kinda think that both armin and erwin wouldve been the right choice strategically but I didnt want to say it cuz many people wouldve bashed me and it has some counter arguments. Like the fact that Armin did plans just as risky as Erwin and Erwin wouldve probably done the same damage to the ennemy since he wouldve inherited the colossal titan too. The choice had no point in terms of strategy cuz both person wouldve probably done the same but morally its a much more difficult question.

5:28 I totally not get why are you mad at him by saying he will rescue eren. I haven't seen anybody react like that . It totally it's telling you something you failed to recognize xd . You hatred towards them is just too biased
Something I only noticed now is an other reason why Levi chose Armin and not Erwin. Of course there is the " why should we bring him back in hell " but the other thing is that Armin willingly let go of his dream of seeing the sea while Erwin needed Levi to tell him to forget his dream and die. I think that's why Levi gives so much attention to Eren talking about going to the sea together etc. He was actually thinking about his last conversation with Erwin.
I think that what finally pushed Levi to chose Armin was Levi's own beliefs that "everyone is drunk on something." Erwin wanted to see the basement. It was his only REAL endgame. Armin wanted to see the WORLD. He wanted to see things beyond the walls and beyond the sea. He was more... ambitious than Erwin was. I feel like that realization pushed Levi to pick Armin in the end. That and Erwin literally slapping the syringe away.
In season 4 the absence of Erwin was too much. Although I initially wanted Armin to get the syringe despite Erwin being my favourite character, in season 4 everyone needed Erwin's experience and commanding. Poor Hange
@@justbigisz1293 that is spoiling the fact that in season four shit is so difficult that we soûls have needed erwin. It mat be not a direct spoiler but it is a hint and that is still the âme for me
The next episodes gonna change your whole perspective on the show. I know these are already recorded. But I am very excited and can't wait to watch your reaction to them. Love your reactions.
@Aubazette Armin's dream was to see the outside world, specifically the Sea, he basically achieves his dream but is able to keep on going just fine. There's no reason Erwin wouldn't be able to as well.
@Aubazette I agree with you! I love Erwin he's an amazing leader but he's a bit selfish and only wants to achieve his goal( humanity comes 2nd to his dream), i feel like after learning the truth maybe he wouldn't have the same motivation to lead
@@MRST0R Yes, it was more than JUST the Sea, but the Sea was the personification/representation of that dream. Much like how Erwin wanted to know the Truth and it was represented (and contained in) the Basement.
I think the reason why Levi choose Armin instead of Erwin is because his dream is reach the basement that's all. Levi aked him before what he gonna do after reaching the basement and Erwin said he not sure. All of Erwin life and everything he done is just because he want to see the truth of basement. But Armin is different, he had a further dream: see the ocean. That's why Levi choose Armin. Dying on chasing the dream is not a bad thing at all.
“This is a cruel world.” No truer words were ever spoken that fit a show so well. Rewatching the show, it’s so damn tragic for Reiner, Bertholdt and, Annie. Like Reiner said in Warrior: “We were just kids. How were we supposed to know?” 🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭
I believe Levi understood at that exact moment that Erwin aspirations where only leading at a “dead end” to only find what was on the basement and prove his dad theory. But Armins aspirations were beyond that, what’s the sea, what’s after the sea…
everyone had to be drunk on something to keep pushing one is the theme of this episode. What being drunk on something for erwin was the basement and if hes done with that he MIGHT have no motivation but Armin exploring outside and infinite curiosity was his drunk on
in this episode we can know how vile and evil Hajime isayama is, he makes us hope and then despair and there is hope again and ends with more despair, how can that psychopath make us choose between armin and erwin, he is really crazy .
I never understood why everyone hated Bertholdts character to me his character was always very tragic and he definitely deserved a better death then he got manga definitely sheds more light on his character would have preferred Reiner to get killed off though
These past two episodes took AoT from great anime to a chance to become the greatest of all time. Here's to hoping season 4 ends well. Now I gotta leave before manga spoilers arrive.
This episode was frustrating because the Scouts don't have enough info about the enemies' goals despite being forced to kill them and experiencing instances that suggest the enemies don't want to kill them either. Also, Reiner is awesome. His superpower is not being able to die. There are so many times in this show where he's on the verge of death, either in 1v1s or being ganged up on, and he just finds a way to survive to squeak out a win, whether it be because of his armor, big muscular body, stamina, sheer willpower, or transferring his consciousness from his brain to the rest of his body. Dude is a problem.
Going to the basement was only his dream. But that’s why, compared to Armin’s dream, and eyes seeing hope, i could understand why Levi chose Armin.. that is sad and beautiful scene. Thank you guys, love you both from Japan^^
I thought about this, but I realized that the point of the episode was to force them to choose. They had to make the decision to save one and to let one die, and having them both die would have left them with clean hands, even if they would have been sadder.
Armin was the only one who won those battles... it cost his life. That's why Eren said neither him or Mikasa will be the heroes... Armin will become the hero of humanity. This part, this episode broke me. You girls not alone :(

Something that's outside of the scope of the situation and we don't know is if he had the opportunity to choose between levi or hange (who ranks over Levi), would he had left the choice to her or to levi, the person who fervently advocated for keeping him alive by not taking him to the mission or by throwing his life to let erwin escaping, or if the fact that levi could have gone for either of the 2 choices played a factor on him revealing that the suicide charge was an option, but ultimately it doesn't matter, what matters is that he took the first and third step towards the less selfish options they came up with at the moment

"... at least Berthold died. Fuck that guy."
"You didn't find that, sad?"
"No. I didn't. I was *really* happy."
🤣🤣🤣🤣
This episode is directed so good that people don't even realize that there's no opening in this episode until they finish it
I’m glad they chose Armin.
Thanks for sticking by us 🥰🤍 -Sam

I've been waiting for this reaction since Morgan said Erwin was her favorite character all those weeks ago....
These 2 episodes are such a rollercoaster. I wish I could say the suffering ends, but the world is hell :'(
Then we’ll just keep moving forward
past 3. that erwin speech was legendary
I never hated Berthold and Reiner 🥺🥺🥺
I hate Annie thou xD
@@macblink she cool why

I'm not sure if you guys noticed cause he was always in the background but the guy who saved hange has literally been in the show since the survey corps have been introduced. He has been with hange through everything and we've actually seen him loads of times throughout the show but because he was always just there next to hange you may not have noticed him and I just thought it was worth pointing out that Moblit is a character who has been a part of the story and actually as close to eren as the original levi squad throughout the whole series
And he died saving Hange. Legend.
I love the influence of Kenny's last words on Levi's decision
Everyone had to be drunk on something to keep pushing on, everyone's a slave to something...
I love how AOT depicts war. In reality, both sides lose.
(e.g. the war in Afghanistan)
Is that explain in season 4.
th-cam.com/video/QIES7ASzATk/w-d-xo.html
Afghanistan was basically two decades of wasting lives on both sides... for nothing.
Those 2 don’t even compare, only the Afghani’s were the victims, The US were invaders
Even till the end Moblit did all he could to keep Hange safe. ❤😭
I love the way this episode was directed. The no music until the end when Armin is back.
Erwin: the one who will later be remembered as a hero
Marlo: the one who wanted to be a hero and couldn't
Levi: the one who was a hero and failed
Armin: The one who wasn't afraid to be a hero
Great reaction btw :D
Honestly both Erwin and armin are equally needed
So yeah, Armin was the right choice, but RIP the most goated commander who ever lived.
bertholdt was one of my favorite characters, his entire story is tragic
Out of all the 104th and the warriors unit Bertholdt was genuinely the most innocent… he never wanted to do any of this 😔
@@Senshi_o yes
I feel sad for Bertold because he's forced to do everything he's done.
bro he did have a choice, idk why so many people fail to see this, he chose to kill thousands of people and his own friends for his familys safety, it sucks that his family was held hostage but he still made that choice, which was kind of a messed up choice, to put your family over the lives of thousands and your own friends, so he wasnt as innocent as yall make him to be, not only that but if all 3, including rainer and annie had allied with paradise, they would have stood a chance to bring down marley and save the other eldias if not their families, marley wouldnt have stood a chance with only 2 titans, and the intel from those 3, but they chose their families over everyone, and before u say anyone would do that, i know i wouldnt.

Ep 17/18 was rated 10/10 on IMD, the best in anime history
When Hange’s glasses break there’s an image of the sky. It’s the first thing she sees after she dies.

Fact : Erwin didn't reject levi offer, he just raised up his hand to ask the teacher
He rejected the offer by raising his hand to ask the teacher.
@@fffernsw4dl539 Nope
The reason why Levi did not choose Erwin is because when Erwin found out Levi didn't get the beast titan, Erwin is going to kick his ass lol
true and real hahahah
@Aubazette you see Erwin immediately drop dead when Levi tell him he didn't kill the beast titan lol
No way in hell Armin is going to become like Erwin. He is just a crybaby for peace that will never happen...

Remember either you die a "Hero" or you live long enough to see yourself as a "Villan"
Whether Armin or Erwin would've been the right choice strategically is debatable but Armin was the right choice morally.
Armis is useless until the end of the manga tho
i mean, when armin makes plans, they succeed and with minimal casualties. when erwin makes plans, the casualties always number in the double digits.
every one of erwins plans have always been "half of our force is a suicide charge, and the other half is actually fighting, while also probably still being on a suicide charge". meanwhile armin disables the colossal titan with one singular combat loss(several casualties to the transformation, but that wasnt avoidable), all while also dealing with the armored titan.
erwin has experience and gets results, but pyrrhic victories are not the mark of a brilliant strategist. i love erwin but i legit think the guys capabilities are overhyped, and armin is just better than erwin in every regard but confidence.

All in due time. I do agree tho, instead of just getting mad at him immediately, just think about what he said
Something I only noticed now is an other reason why Levi chose Armin and not Erwin.
The last thing Hange saw with her left eye was the death of her most beloved comrade.
It was remarkable to see the Armin/Erwin decision take place in real life on the couch as well.
From here to s4, the lack of leadership in the scouts will make u sad.

I think a lot of confusion could be avoided if yall actually read the subtitles lol
Lmao the CLEAR difference in opinion on who to save cracks me up 😂😂
Also 2 years later re watching this. It’s hilarious to see the difference in emotions on armin being saved 😂😂

Facts 💯
@Aubazette Armin's dream was to see the outside world, specifically the Sea, he basically achieves his dream but is able to keep on going just fine. There's no reason Erwin wouldn't be able to as well.
@Aubazette I agree with you! I love Erwin he's an amazing leader but he's a bit selfish and only wants to achieve his goal( humanity comes 2nd to his dream), i feel like after learning the truth maybe he wouldn't have the same motivation to lead
@@Tundra0stalker his dream wasn’t juste that, he wanted to discover the whole world not just the sea even if it was the main goal
@@MRST0R Yes, it was more than JUST the Sea, but the Sea was the personification/representation of that dream. Much like how Erwin wanted to know the Truth and it was represented (and contained in) the Basement.
The biggest mistake Levi did ever 😢
RIP commander Erwin! Shinzou sasageyoo!!!!
Eren's voice actor is so good at crying he makes me cry so much in this episode
both Eren's are fucking incredible this episode
“This is a cruel world.” No truer words were ever spoken that fit a show so well. Rewatching the show, it’s so damn tragic for Reiner, Bertholdt and, Annie. Like Reiner said in Warrior: “We were just kids. How were we supposed to know?” 🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭
I believe Levi understood at that exact moment that Erwin aspirations where only leading at a “dead end” to only find what was on the basement and prove his dad theory. But Armins aspirations were beyond that, what’s the sea, what’s after the sea…
ya this was the only part in AOT be like ya no way he was alive they just made him alive for the plot but he should have been dead 100%

hange and levi are the only vetren left which breaks my heart. they lost a lot of their friends and comrades. and now they lost Erwin.
everyone had to be drunk on something to keep pushing one is the theme of this episode. What being drunk on something for erwin was the basement and if hes done with that he MIGHT have no motivation but Armin exploring outside and infinite curiosity was his drunk on

I don't care what anyone says, these past few episodes alone are proof that AoT is a masterpiece
Great episode...I hope they noticed the lack of background score till the last few moments
“All This talking and they both might die” 😂I thought the same thing
I thought about this, but I realized that the point of the episode was to force them to choose. They had to make the decision to save one and to let one die, and having them both die would have left them with clean hands, even if they would have been sadder.
Armin was the only one who won those battles... it cost his life. That's why Eren said neither him or Mikasa will be the heroes... Armin will become the hero of humanity. This part, this episode broke me. You girls not alone :(
