You've probably seen people doing this exercise (or something similar) on the ground, on their knees, and moving the entire upper torse, hinging on the waist. It's not the most effective way to train your abs, or at least you're missing out on a great opportunity to really sculpt the abs and get them stronger with just this little adjustment, standing, and shorter range of motion.

Why would you use such a tiny range of motion?surely this isn't as effective as a normal standing cable crunch?

For abs, you need to flex the spine NOT keeping back straight and in neutral position.

@@basedabdu8653 only thing is, that's like doing it on your knees, and recruits the hip flexors more than it does isolate the abs

i'll be trying this out tomorrow - my right knee has a lump that prohibits me from kneeling on the ground without discomfort so, booyah, this will be my work around.. tell ya how it goes.

Could you do these with dumbells if there is no cablemachine?

Wouldn't a kneeling crunch be more effective since the rom is substantially way more

You actually engage your hip flexors more when on your knees. After a certain point in the range of motion, the hip flexors take over when you bend down to far. You can keep the tension isolated in the abs better when you do this standing. Like I say in the video, imagine your abs stacking like an accordion then holding them in that tension. Much like an abdominal and thigh pose in bodybuilding, but adding weight, this will help develop more shape, size, and strength, creating the more "blocky" looking abs.
