I had a Troy-Bilt trimmer once. It ran great for a couple of seasons and then became a bear to start. I'm currently using my 20 year old B&D 20 volt cordless. Down to two batteries though. Good job on the fix
Its kinda funny watching the raw footage because I'm not "making videos" when I'm recording. I'm just recording whatever happens on the bench. LETS GO!
Thanks for the video! Just bought one from major retailer. Got it home, put it together and tried for an hour yesterday and today to get it to start. Nothing! Went back to retailer and was told once it has gas in it, can't return it. How the hell can you know if it doesn't work out of the box. This model too. Going to visit with GM on Tuesday. Again, great info. They have no inhouse service........
We hear that type of story all the time. I know its cheaper to buy from a big box store or online but is it really? You're gonna have a lot of time and frustration in this simple trimmer purchase when a dealer would have had it prepped and test run before you got it. I wonder if their "gas" policy is posted anywhere for you to see?
Definitely considering to buy a the troy-built straight shaft weed-eater for my place next spring. They’re very powerful and heard they perform well overall. Especially the straight shaft cause have almost half an acre of lawn at my house.
Also considering the curve shaft Troy built weed-eater in case I don’t like the straight shaft, so will see, but do like straight shaft cause it’s easier to trim around hard to reach areas of my big lawn.
On those troy bilt some times the 2 bolts hold the jug or cylinder to lower crane casing will come lose and you have to tighten them back down to seal it . Mine did it I had stored it for 3 year cause it just would not run . Had fire put brand new carb and lines on it steal would not run . So after 3 years in storage instead of buying a brand new one I figured I'd give it one more look over and thought well I never looked at muffler to see if it was clogged and when I took it off I could see those 2 bolts holding jug on was just about to fall out I put lock tight on them and tighten them down good put it back together and it runs better than it did when it was brand new
@@randyc2525 Yes. It allows you to change the gap with a thumb screw. Many manufacturers recommend setting the gap around 6mm. If it jumps that gap with a nice blue spark then you know your module has the reserve power it needs. Other testers just tell you yes or no on spark with no clue as to weak or strong.
❓ What MTD part did you use? I want to be able to order the right one. The only one that I see is for a Craftsman not a Troy-Bilt two cycle. Do you have a reference or a link or even an order number? Thank you in advance. I am doing everything I can to avoid going green here.
@@RoyalCaribbeanCruiseChronicles that's the idea, to force customers into throwing them away and buying a new one, over and over and over again. it's called the sustainable business model. I've seen a lot of people throw away their trimmers simply because they had no idea they could adjust the pac man screws and get it running again. the user manuals don't even mention those carburetor adjustment screws because they don't want regular Joe homeowner to be able to fix his own trimmer.

You don't have a ryobi trimmer? I know you have batteries.
@@TheGreasyShopRag I do have a Ryobi trimmer, but I prefer my old B&D. I’ll probably get a 40v Ryobi trimmer when it dies
It's always a good time when you yell at yourself in post-production about going too slowly. "LET'S GO!!" lol

I got 10/15 of these I may fix up a few this winter when it’s slow 😊
Sounds like a good plan.

They work fine if you don't leave old fuel in them.

I just did one today with the same problem. It happens
What kind of spark checker is that. I’m tired of my crappy HF one. Thanks.
Google this: Echo PET4000 Spark Tester
@@TheGreasyShopRag thank you. Would you recommend this one?

Thank you so much for your reply.
@@TheGreasyShopRag I believe you meant 0.6 mm the spark plug gap. 6 mm is quarter of inch
Very creative post name, made me subscribe on it alone!!!
Thanks for watching and subbing!
Looks like the coil is bad too me and I’ve had several new ones with bad coils 😢😢😢
Just out of curiosity, I realize you've been doing this a long time. Do you ever have a moment where you forget which screws go where? Thank you
Sure I do but its usually easy to work it out just using logic.
AMAZING VIDEO
Thanks for watching!
(2:52) who is the person walking into frame? do you know this person? are you aware of the danger you were in?
Good day, all the way from Jamaica, is this trimmer made by craftsman ? They look similar, love the video
I don't think Craftsman ever made gas powered tools. This is most likely an MTD unit if its less than 20 years old. Thanks for watching!

I don't remember but try looking up your model on Parts Tree for a part number.
Great video

Just did this swap on identical machine. Makes you wonder 🤔
Cheap parts keep costs down.

I don’t like Troy bill string trimmers junk
I don't recommend them but I'll certainly fix them. The pay is the same as higher quality units.
Cost almost as much to fix than get a new and better one.
I agree. I regret getting one.
Me neither, they are a POS these days despite the Built for life motto, which is BS. I would recommend a stihl, echo or Husqvarna.

Nice, plastic crankshaft cover.
They just keep building them cheaper and cheaper.
I know what's wrong with it, Aint got no gas in it!!! Lol
Dumpster food
Dumpster food puts food on my table.
Mine is horse shit. Has not worked right since day one
Did you buy it from a dealer?
