Thank you for posting, I had the same problem as what you described less the oil issue. None of you tips fixed my issue, but it helped me find mine. While doing the flash arrester cleaning noticed the muffler was loose. Removed it, found the mating surface gasket disintegrated and the screw that has the standoff/spacer lost its mating surface to the muffler, like the screw has been rattling around for a bit. So, I went to AutoZone bought a copper oil drain plug item 652816, (might try to find and order the correct part later). Comes with 3 different sizes of washers, the one I used ended having to be hog out a little bit with one of those Christmas tree drill-bits. I used a Timmerman washer on the screw that lost its meeting surface so it would fill the counter sunk area. Tightened everything down, no movement. Worked great thank you for your help getting the ball rolling. First issue I’ve had with my now 17 year old weed eater.
Thank you for the info, this taught me a lot about the Troy bilt 30cc 4 cycle engine, my order is still being shipped, but I like to know fixing factors ahead of time. Thanks, James
Great video I love that you gave all info & stats were everything should be set THXS !! and yeah sometimes things are shot but I agree most time there not witch makes it all worth fiddling with these motors anyway two thumbs up Thxs again.
exactly right, I have the same trimmer and yes it uses oil but an adjustment on the carb needle makes it run great. It runs super smooth and has fantastic torque.
You have to go online and buy one of those style carbs but with an adjustment screw. The non-adjustable Walbro ones they come with are absolute JUNK!!!
@@jeremyroberts1050 No they are not. This style walbro carburetor doesn’t have any mixture adjustment. I’m a small engine mechanic and I see these carbs all the time
@@paulspomer16 yeah so am I. Look down the center of the throttle. There's a brass needle that runs down the center. That brass needle has a little D head on it.

Your breather tube is full of discolored oil ya need to clean out that crankcase breather tube. Overfilled with oil plugged that up. Seen it over again with these motors
Check that out you may be surprised . I’ve seen like oil and water mixed come out of the breather tube. Use sea foam carb cleaner and a little compressed air back pressure will blow a lot of snot out of that tube. New oil new gas start it up
Hello, I have a Black Max 4 cycle trimmer. It has never run. got it on clearance and cant return it. I have spark, i got a new plug, will not run with starter fluid in the carb. Will not do anything. from what I understand disassembly is required to find timing mark on the crank shaft. I get a little, very littel smoke from exhaust. Any help would be appreciated
I would do a compression check to see if you have compression. if compression is an issue, check the valve adjustment as that could be the issue. if the valve adjustment is fine and you have low compression it could be bad rings.
DLM, there's one thing you seriously overlooked. Even though the machine has spark, how do you know it was strong enough to accelerate???!!! A weak spark will allow an engine to idle, but will not help accelerate it!!!!
4 cycle small engines like that are pure junk. After only a few hours run time they start pumping the crankcase oil into the air breather section non-stop. Nothing fixes that... I know I had three of them and everyone did the exact same thing after a very short time running... Junk! So much for not having to mix fuel...
Mine is 17 years old, aside from the primer bulb cracking twice, changing the fuel lines once, and changing the tank, no issues. I live in Mississippi, asking plastics to stand up to this weather is asking a lot.
@@toddosterhout9866 True, the carb is adjustable. it needs a special tool and the needle adjustment is on the front of the throttle body. I cut a piece of the plastic housing so I can get a straight angle to it. after a couple adjustments it has all the power I could want, super torquey machine. Yes is burns a little oil, but I think once the engine gets warmed up it uses less oil but when cold it uses more oil. Not a big deal I just have a squirt bottle with a little oil in it before I use it.
This is a very good description, this video helps to solves most problems with these equipment.

Same model with the same problem. Last Troy built I will ever buy.
High speed needle adjustment could take care of this problem; most carbs have one but some are well-hidden.

@@uhjyuff2095 So, how do you adjust the carb needle? I have a different model, but the carb is probably same. A Walbro WYLA 5.

That's a fact, my Troybilt weed-eater & Craftsman Leaf-blower use the same carb & they are doing the same thing!😡
They are adjustable from the factory. You need a little D adjustment tool to do it.

I sprayed carb cleaner in mine and had no more problems
adjust the needle on the carb. it needs a special tool and is located on the front of the throttle body

I didn't even think about that when it comes to small engines... Def right on that!! Appreciate the info

it wasn't, the problem was bad rings, which was why the oil was puking out @@robertmehlfelderbob

Idk if it’s adjustable but that carburetor either needs an adjustment or the diaphragm is bad
