Making an open-able phone with accessible screws be a gimmick rather than actually repair-friendly? Yea nah... just a marketing scheme
You can actually access the battery though
Yeah. Duck em. They can fuck off with the no repair battery
@@ajiqoyum745 No you can't.
@@ajiqoyum745 But they don't want you to do that so.... Why do it ?
@@the_crypterYou probably won't have to swap the battery during the warranty period, and afterwards it doesn't matter if the tamper tape is damaged.
Wait. Going through that R&D for making a cool design with easy access to the internals, but not making the internals accessible in a repair-friendly way and NOT letting the user replace a battery? They were close to convincing us they care, but that quite literally shows that they don't. There is literally NO reason to have that battery warning for this phone.
I KNOW RIGHT
@@abhijithekv Ah yes all the people were replacing their batteries 10 years ago and everyone's house burned so badly because of that.
@@abhijithekv Voiding warranty Vs liability for external damages are two isolated things.
It's EASY to provide a replaceable battery without exposing any of the internals and adding a contractual clause for releasing any liability from CMF if a third party battery is used.
There is actually no valid excuse for this. Replaceable batteries were the norm for decades without any of the Apple-like "safety" excuses.
@@TheLexikitty What's your screen time?
@@abhijithekv how stupid do you have to be to set your house on fire when replacing a phonr batterie???
the fact that you can see the battery but they took extra measures to prevent you from replacing it is so wrong I don't know from where to start
By the time you need to replace it you won't have warranty anyway. It's only tape; doesn't stop you from replacing the battery.
@@RennieAsh it should not void the warranty, I don't think this phone is waterproof so there should be no reason not to make it easily swappable. I think if they made it this way and sold batteries as part of the accessories when it degraded you can easily change it. it would have been way better
@@RennieAshSo what? That doesn't matter because once this phone's a year older it will cost a hundred bucks on the resale market anyways. The point is not about losing the warranty if you change the battery, the point is that this phone is going to end up in landfills years before it would otherwise because you can't easily replace the battery.
I'm not worried about replacing the battery in the first 12 months, and I'm not worried about the warranty being broken because honestly at that point the phone will be a hundred bucks on the resale market anyways. It's about keeping these things out of landfills, and it's about allowing people to access the internals. For a million other reasons.
@@RennieAshRight but 99% of people aren't going to take tools out to do it. If you're going to go this far to let you open the back anyways then let us actually access the internals.
@@michaelcorcoran8768 is it actually hard to change the battery though? The hardest part about changing the battery in most phones is getting to the battery. Why are you saying it's so hard to change?
I was actually considering it... Until the lack of NFC. Wireless charging isnt a big deal but contactless payments are kinda a standard now on modern phones
Is it even avilable in the western markets without the Beta signup ?
To be honest my Pixel Watch took over as my NFC payment device. Just much more simple to use something that's always already out IMO
Yall dont have QR code scan payments?
lack of nfc and mono speaker, why would they compromise on those
Must be a 1st world thing on nfc and contactless payments
I think this is the perfect phone for parents to buy for their kids as their first phone, from the catchy bright colours to the lanyard.
Come to think of it, the iPod Touch (which I really wanted as a kid) came in at the same price as this phone... At a time when the US dollar was worth a lot more than it is today
Yup and lack of NFC is better to me. One less access point to worry about
if you have a 3d printer (or someone that has access to them ..etsy) making custom backs or accessories doesnt sound out of the question for this. Thats kinda cool to me
Backs are gonna be difficult. The camera glass and the quality of waterproofing would definitely deteriorate
Righ, because that's what people need - a cheap plastic back in their phones.
@@Tarets a potentially very customised back to their phone.
@@Tarets3d printing has come a long way my friend. Some of the most quality products are 3d printed
Yeah, or wood, I have a laser cutter that I use for wood and I could make some cool stuff for it. I'm thinking of getting the phone and experiment with it, it's not that expensive.
damn this phone cheaper than daves onlyfans
Lol
I pirate his OF content
He has onlyfans?
Bick is better than Bussy
This man has an OF?
I agree with Dave that a more premium version of this phone would be awesome, with more advances modules or even custom ones, as well as custom cases.
That has been done before and failed. Moto and LG went in that direction and no one cared apart from a tiny biche demographic.
They already have a premium version it's called the nothing phone 2a.
LG: ????
@@andyH_England they introduced all of those things when their brand value was almost 0
No one was buying their products in the first place
LG, Moto all brought mid tier customisable phones but we didn't buy it enough to sustain the trend.
Someone is moving in the right direction, quite original. Makes me question how much we overpay for electronic devices in general.
I love how this guy is short quick, to the point and no BS.
honestly all the drawbacks are completely valid for the price. the removable back would make me run this caseless since if it gets scratched up it's easy to replace. something i'm too scared to do with my pixel 7 and that glossy rear.
Or just not caring. A scratched plastic bacon doesn't look as bad as scratched glass or metal.
Also, it's probably more crack resistant so even something as simple as a skin or stickers would help with the scratch issue.
I personally would never run caseless though, I am way too clumsy, but I can see myself being a bit more to try it out with a phone like this
I saw the Mr.WTB video then came here. This is more information dense and value add in < 1/3rd the time. Very impressive
Mr WTB is for kids. D2D for the real
That's why I've stuck with D2D all these years
That big bottom screw gives me ipod touch vibes, loved that thing soo much
This is gonna be great for 3d printing your own case and accessory
Great point 👍
the user accessible battery is cool and all, even if there's that seal on it, however what matters is providing original batteries for purchase after a long period of time, original batteries are almost always difficult to acquire, especially a few years after the release of the phone.
@@goblinslayer5404 Yeah. The proof of something being repairable or not is not just if the battery can be chucked away easily, as a lot of comments are bringing up, but whether or not you can even get the parts.
Dave doesn't fuck around. Always to the point reviews. Love it!
Yes Dave is the model family man, loyal and honest.
Boy oh boy Louis rossmann is gonna rip them a new one 💀
it is $199 and is already easier to replace the battery than most other phones. he can't be too hard with it.
Why?
Making a battery user-replaceable is no longer as easy as you think. We are no longer in 2002, where you have puny 250mah batteries. These are 5k batteries, that are easy to damage if handled poorly. At least replacing the battery on this device is not as destructive as say doing it on an iPhone. In the iPhone, you will need a heat gun, a suction tool, a prying tool, and some guitar picks to get the back off. Then you need a special contact cement to properly glue it back together. And after all that, you lose the IP rating. At least on this, you just need to unscrew a few things.
@@AA-fi5nj you still need to deal with the glue, but now it's just for the battery which is much, much easier to handle than the thin frame for the screen.
@@AA-fi5nj but all the difficulty is made by design really, not a cost we accepted to advance the technology further
Am I currently observing a deceptively repaired mobile device?
Yes!
Do you mean "deceptively repairable"?
What's deceptive about it? Do you people even understand the words you use?
Nope.
Not really. The battery is easily accessible but I doubt its easily removable. Probably glued.
The Essential PH-1, now the Phone (Ph) 1 from the same engineers, both with a single primary camera plus a secondary imager, It also allowed you to attach accessories, in this case a DSP or a 360 degree camera. I'm loving the swappable plastic back plates which doesn't necessitate a separate case. Both also have a single speaker and no wireless charging or NFC. The main difference is the OS support, which was top notch for years on the PH-1, even after the company folded.
I think this phone is essentially kade for India but is sold in other countries as bonus
We have UPI (unified payments interface) tech which doesn't require NFC and wireless charging isn't much of an issue
I really don't understand why Western countries don't have UPI. It just needs a camera and a screen.
The NFC space inside the phone could be used for battery or camera, and make the phone cheaper.
@@dariusdaremeUpi requires much larger ecosystem our kyc is done with aadhar upi is implemented free of cost through npci. There is a lot more happening which we don't understand.
@@dariusdareme you mean just the US? The US is basically the only country who is so lacking in that regard vs the other western countries.
Even Brazil already implemented something similar. PIX is a system that allows peer-to-peer transactions with no transaction fee via a qr code or id number
What is upi? Is it like ewallet?
no nfc, no google pay, no tap payment system is such a strange choice. I'd argue that's one of the main functions of phones these days. Horrible
It may work in asia where I am no one uses nfc
Yep. Asian markets
One of the main functions? I don't know anyone that regularly uses apple or google pay. It's a nice addition, but for 200 that is one of the first things I would be willing to sacrifice
Bruh, It's not made for you, its for Asian markets especially India where literally no one uses that.
In some markets where I think nothing expects this phone to sell very well, nfc payment isn't very common
It's a nice little gimmick for sure, on top of an already attractive phone for 200 dollars. Won't call it game changing but it's cool to have some DIY elements on a boring slab!
Hope u are doing well, Dave. We see less of you these days 😢

@@FunBotan that's over three times the price, and the performance isn't that much better.
You get that phone if repairability is your absolute top concern.
What about redmi and poco
Just having NFC and better speakers would be music to my ears
I thought this would be the resurrection of the modular phone project
@@brucec.s.m.9780 I don't think that's ever going to be a thing, it doesn't make sense
I'm sorry but you're all too... Enthusiast for this in the comments. At this price point I'll get this for a parent. They'll never use wireless charging, nfc, need multi-cameras. Just a solid device without being an abysmal build quality. More of this
But nfc is a must for me
this is my thought exactly, my mom needs a new phone and this would probably do nicely.
p.s. she only makes calls and listens to music
But how often does the average parent upgrade their device? 4 or 5 years, maybe more? But updates are only available for 2 years so it doesn't really fit the typical parent use-case either
NFC would be really needed for Google Pay though
@@TyQuinn might not! Though my parents are a touch... Clumsy, so a $200 phone works for me
Now that's my dream smartphone design. Screws and all that good jazz. If this thing have a flagship SoC, that'd be instantly my next go-to phone.
It's sad that they don't allow swapping out the battery and components even though the phone can be opened easily. I wonder if there's a good reason for this
Money
You can swap out the battery. It's just that they will know about it and your warranty will be void.
@@madil2259 I mean, opening any budget phone is not that hard.... My poco with a glass back ( and better other specs, like ultra wide camera, stereo speakers, faster charging etc) can also have its battery replaced...
Replaceable battery means it is designed to be replaced by the user, without any sort of issues.
@@madil2259 The point they're making is then it doesn't separate it from any other phone then. If the phone has a removeable back, then that should mean the battery is replaceable, as that is the precedent
#1 money - if they allowed for swapping they would be required to cover it under the warranty and sell the spare batteries at the very least.
#2 liability - the Li-ion batteries nowadays including the one in CMF come just wrapped in soft foil and are susceptible to damage from light, creasing, punctures and gripping them too tight, which all can happen when attempting a battery swap. Nothing would be held accountable for the damage and injuries resulted from combusting batteries.
officially not allowing the battery repair lets them waive it all away simply as user mishandling their device, saving them time, money and PR
Really reminds me of the first Moto G, where you were able to remove the back and also have the option to replace it with other colored options.
For $200 there is no room to complain

No NFC/payment system is a really strange trade-off and would be an absolute deal breaker for me. Is that a trade-off made by other budget phones? I’m sure Nothing have crowd tested this trade-off, but I’m still surprised. Maybe Nothings target market value a 120hz panel over NFC, but I still find that hard to believe. I would have dropped the panel down to 90hz, saved a bit of money and included an nfc chip, assuming the space-envelop can accommodate it. Or bumped the price up slightly….or both 😅
Otherwise, absolutely fantastic design for $200.
Man, they almost done it.
Easily openable phone at a decent price with swappable backplates, but then... no swappable batteries?!
Like the concept is cool, but that plus no headphone jack, just makes it just not really worth considering at all
Exactly. When he said they don't want you to replace battery, i checked out
You can swap it though.
@@metamon2704 But not without tools or voiding warranty.
You know how nice it is when travelling just to pop in a brand new bat and be at 100%. Can't believe no one is doing that anymore
@@MichelPostmaStreamsBatteries now are far denser and more fragile. If you want an extra battery, you'd need some safe way of storing it. At that point just get a power bank, they're cheaper than a replacement battery, portable, hold basically twice the charge of any phone out there (if you go for a budget but still reputable brand), and isn't just for one single device.
@@twelvezerosI don't know if you ever saw the Steam Deck video where Valve was basically imploring you not to open the device over and over again... just as they were showing you how to do just that, and are partnered with ifixit to give you parts and guides.
I promise you, as someone that has opened phones and a steam deck before, that changing the battery on the CMF phone is easy given that you don't need to take off anything other than the back to get to it.
Unless they straight up refuse to sell batteries, they're not really being much anticonsumer beyond the sticker (which is not binding in some markets), and if you are opting to buy and replace a battery yourself or through a third party rather than, you know, using the free warranty option, you probably weren't going to use the warranty to begin with. (which can be the case, I buy my phones unlocked online, they aren't covered by warranty where I live at all)
While other reviewers are trying to lengthen the duration like a used chewing gum, this video is surprisingly concise and to the point, that's why I'm subscribed to this channel 🥰

Okay I thought Nothing was just for enthusiasts and just thought of it as another smart phone, but I think a design like that is essential for repairability. Pretty ingenious. Wouldn't be surprised if it becomes a standard or inspires some new thoughts on how to approach the design of a phone.
But why would i want to open it if i can't swap the batteries or unplug it if it crashes?
Either way if they did give you freedom to swap batteries that would void warranty
@@IpadAcc.Why though? If they sold their own replacement battery, then it would be an official part. Plus, in most Western countries, even the original battery inside a new phone is classed as a "consumable part", and isn't covered under the phone's standard warranty, same as how "cosmetic damage", like scratches to the screen or dents to the body, aren't covered. In many cases, nor is the charger or cable

Wow, that's cool design. Would be interesting to come up with custom backplates and effectively replace phone cases. Would be a huge win for practical thinness
Phone cases on plastic phones are more about protecting the front than the back.
Had to buy 2. Me and my wife have both given up our 22 ultras for these. Keeping the ultras in the drawer and these will be our daily for the next year or so. Already loving the fact they are so cheap, but retain the fluidity and screen brightness, and add a 1.5tb micro SD?! while being able to sling it around like I don't care about it because hey, it's not a grand to replace for once. It's so freeing
As an iPhone Pro Max user, I hate being landlocked to all these "corporate friendly" color options (black, navy blue/purple, gold, silver). And as a result I'm always on the hunt for fun and vibrant cases that don't muck up my iPhone's functionality. A smartphone like this in a more "flagship" premium tier would definitely catch my eye and have me considering going back to Android after so many years. Just the idea of being able to swap out my smartphone's shell any day of the week for a different color (or to fix some cosmetic damage) is EXTREMELY appealing to a nerd like me :)
The SD card slot is a big win... I am buying atleast 5 pcs of this phone. To share to family members...
Seems really cool
I would love if my S24 U had a removable back like this (if they managed to have it with wireless charging). I would never worry about using a case again. Not to mention the cool accessories that people would create using 3D printers.
I agree with Dave, this is a much better idea than the gliphs
I was really waiting for your opinion on this phone
Even this shitty swappable back cover gimmick is gonna make this phone stand out the competition
Well done
This had me at first until I saw the removable back was just a gimmick to sell different colors. If this was fully repairable I'd buy one just to have as a backup.
this guy is very clean
Let´s all be honest, the concept is pretty cool. But the pricepoint just cuts too many benefits. For 300-350 this should be a phone that: Includes the accesories (c´mon it´s plastic), have a snapdragon 7+gen3, NFC, stereo speakers, a better camera system (doesn´t matter if it´s a single camera module), and being able to swap battery. And that´s it.

In my opinion I feel like Nothing nailed it for this budget phone.
1. For the price of RM1099 you literally getting 80% functionality of a mid-range phone.
2. It doesn’t overcomplicate the design, utility and functionality.
3. With swappable back plate is such a steal for when your stock one gets damage.
4. A camera that is literally just snap and go.
5. Plus, if you add the accessories, its still priced lower than the competitors with their added ones.
6. OLED screen which most budget phone doesn’t have.
7. Nothing OS which doesn’t have bloatware like other Chinese phone brand in their budget range.
8. A solid 5000mh battery with an expendable SD slot is great to have for a budget phone.
For people talking about the NFC not included, this phone is catered for the Indian market which uses QR scan and most people in the Asia market dont really use NFC. Plus cmf could even release a NFC backplate for the phone separately if they wanted to.
You CAN choose between the blue or orange colors when purchasing for no cost. I just checked their site.

The BEST thing about this phone is the earbuds case that came with it lmao that volume knob can be so useful!
I rather they make a $250 phone and added NFC, stereo speakers, and headphone jack, also fast charging if it doesn't have it, or add them to the 16GB version for $300. They probably stripped those features so they can hit the $199 target price point.

Love your video. Straight to the point. MKBHQ took so long to just talk about the same thing.
I'm surprised companies are still using tamper stickers, since they are illegal in the US and just last week the FTC sent out letters to ASUS, Gigabyte and several other PC and home appliance companies about their illegal warranty practices including tamper stickers.
For clarification tamper stickers on or inside products placed by the manufacturer is illegal even if they intend them to aid device repair/diagnose processes and ignore them for warranty claims.
They are legal on packaging however for theft and fraud reasons.
It is also legal for companies or individuals placing their own tamper stickers on sensitive and secured devices like Point of sale devices, card readers, door locks, computer drives with sensitive data, etc.
The dial is pretty sweet. Most interesting part for me. Tactile buttons are great for audio devices. Kinda like the surface headphones.
Just make one that is LEGO compatible on the back and I'd be sold
5 min less than Marques' vid & i definitely feel like i got more out of this 😂. You both are my fav tech TH-camrs but you always have a certain energy about tech that i love & get straight to the point which is much appreciated! I also agree that a more high end, polished version of this is what the Nothing puone should have been. I mean imagine if Nothing decided to make a glyph case for this that was powered by a wireless charging coil that had the reverse wireless charging feature. Once you got tired of the glyph you could just swap it out. That would be kind of dope.
The best feature was the SD card slot. I miss the days when every phone had easily expandable storage.
The accessories are expensive, but I foresee a whole cottage industry of 3D printed accessories in the future if this phone takes off. 🤞
the whiplash on the first minute of this video is impeccable. A cheap phone you can open up evokes waaaaaay more promise than changing the color.
I wonder when things will get advanced enough to make phone components hot-swappable. like I get we can only do this economy of size with permeant/proprietary installation right now, but it would be exciting to have off-the-shelf phone components the same way we do for desktops and even laptops, increasingly.
@@EmmisonMike I doubt it, not unless you want a really bulky phone. There's a reason as to why you can change basically any part on a desktop, but are incredibly more limited in a laptop.
Even for something like framework. Want to change the cpu? Gotta replace the whole motherboard. I think framework is amazing, but even then they aren't using "off the shelf" parts, the modularity is for their own ecosystem.
More and more laptops are going with the opposite direction, with RAM being integrated rather than modular.
Being able to have something the size of a phone with performance that is modular without having some major compromises, while not impossible, doesn't really seem to have a viable way forward as of now. Even the Fairphone isn't really "modular". It's highly repairable, but with components made for that specific phone.
@@Fernando-ek8jp there’s also just the thermodynamics involved with scale, I bet. Like your desktop is going to be easier to get more juice out of because there’s enough space in there to keep everything at an optimal temperature. Plus that form factor came up in a time where modularity was still a factor in professional equipment, whereas phones are more in an ecosystem.
I’m wondering if these trends are absolute, though, and that maybe we’ll have the tech to where a modular phone has big compromises, but everything is so slim and light that it just balances out to our contemporary standard for a pocketable phone. Maybe these ecosystems will be busted by anti-trust law or just customer preference, dunno what that future holds, right?
@@EmmisonMike This is true, I just think it's unlikely.
Even with how modular pc's are, how many people actually go around changing or adding parts? Even within the desktop ecosystem, a lot of computers are just used until the whole thing needs to be replaced with little to no changes between purchase and complete replacement because most people don't actually care.
It's like the Linux thing. You have a completely free OS family that you can pick and choose from, tweak to your heart's content... And what does the market say? Most people just want a thing that works.
While it make be physically and technologically possible to make a modular phone (which we know is the case, others have been attempted). Would it make business sense?
Would it make sense to have separate graphics, camera processing, gpu, network processing, etc in a phone instead of just an Soc with everything integrated? If you just have the SoC with everything, then what else could be modular? Storage? Maybe, it would be nice.
Screen? Possible, but then you'd have to have standardized phone casing sizes and...
You get the point.
I don't think it's as much of a tech issue as it is a business and logistics one
@@Fernando-ek8jp all of these are great points, thanks for thinking through this with me. I’m definitely in the “if the economy of technology was fundamentally different, some really cool things could happen!” Which is nice to hold in your head for when something that looks like those cool things alllllmost shows up, you can think “that is cool!” Right alongside “wait, the economy of technology would have to be fundamentally different to support this, what are these guys pulling here?”
I'll be getting this. I don't use/care about NFC on my current phone which cost much more, so it's nice to not have to pay for things I don't use. I have yet to come upon random great deal bargains out in the world where some dude selling his old car could take NFC. Cash is still king for deal finders.
Since connecting earbuds to PCs/Laptops is always a pain, I would welcome the option to connect the buds case via USB so it can serve as an antenna. That would be awesome.
