    I really appreciate this perspective on Beyoncé's albums. I'll admit I'm not a fan of the "pick me" conversation regarding her music because it ignores the history of R&B and the natural hyperbole that has always been involved when writing and singing about love. I also dislike that she is the only one tagged with this brush. That said, I do believe that there is a trilogy songs that showcase her shifting relationship with her father from the idealistic (Daddy) to the disappointment (Daddy Lessons) to the acceptance of her father as his own flawed human being(Find Your Way Back)

    • @saintadamson
      @saintadamson  2 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      You know you’ve made a good point about natural hyperbole within R&B. I just think the hyperbole of female R&B contradicts the hyperbolic toxicity of male R&B and hip-hop, so women end up in situations they deserve, such as infidelity. I don’t think she’s the only one cast with this stroke, I mentioned her influences such as Mary J. Blige (the whole My Life album) but even Aretha Franklin with for example, I’ve Never Loved A Man the Way I’ve Loved You. I think Beyoncé’s “pick-me”-ness (which I don’t think is a fair assessment) only gets discussed because 1. She’s Beyoncé and 2. She was so open about her relationship in LEMONADE. When Summer Walker released Still Over It, she got a similar, albeit smaller reaction too.
      Thank you so much for commenting, I’ve really valued your perspective.

      @chiamakanwadike3688 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      there's room to accept the hyperbole of rnb and still critically think about what the hyperbolic statements mean under patriarchy and misogyny. the pick me video also talked about how acts of service isnt wrong or bad, but it should be performed where it is celebrated, where it is cherished. so while beyonce can sing in hyperbole in cater 2 u or upgrade u, etc...the socio political context in which she sings it in still matters

    • @MissAlmostFine
      @MissAlmostFine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@chiamakanwadike3688 "acts of service isn't bad, but should be performed where celebrated" is the entire premise of Cater to You. The songs first lines express that the partner is someone who does right by them, works hard and motivates, and the "catering" is reciprocal. Like that's my whole thing. This entire premise comes out of the discussion of "Cater To You" being pick me and I just disagree. There is that one line from Kelly that is problematic but the set up and sentiment is fundamentally NOT pick me(unless being reciprocal in a relationship with a man is pick me).

      @@MissAlmostFine I think what @Chiamaka Nwadike said that was significant was "the socio political context in which she sings it in still matters".

    This is incredible. I would've never came to this conclusion about her discography on my own. What's interesting is how it parallels with Kendrick Lamar’s discography.
    Section 80 - identifying the problem
    GKMC - explaining the problem through story
    TPAB - Trying to fix the problem (savior complex)
    DAMN - realizing he can't fix the problem (damned if you do, damned if you don't
    Mr. Morale - coming to peace with the problem and fixing himself.
    They're genius and will be looked back on hundreds of years from now for their contribution to the industry, society, and art.

I will say as a fan, Beyoncé means a lot to us and she never gets online to defend herself -like ever, she rarely even speaks outside of her music. Saint, your analysis has opened up my eyes more to Beyoncé's songs and albums. From the way her albums are layed out it seems that the essence in her music is Love. From the raw emotions that comes with romantic love, especially when you have been with the same person for decades and have built a life and family with this person, the perspective on love for that person changes overtime. 💘 Also, love plays a role in her music when it comes to her children and parents, the maternal love and parental love perspectives of Love. 💓💞 Saint, You did a GREAT job with breaking down Beyoncé's discography. Thank you for sharing this video with us! 😊

    ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT dissection of her discography, which I also believe in turn tied into her life and career overall. lol I'm sure that's not what you intended but that's what happened. This also reals another layer of why we love Beyoncé so much because of the authenticity within her artistry, as you said, "She bare it all in her music." She barely lets us TRULY know certain things about her and her family in interviews but she puts it all in her music, but she CODES it and it is the listeners job to DECODE the messages of what she wants the world to know about her through the music. You've got to listen with a FINE TUNED EAR to really sometimes understand what she's really trying to say

    Her new album is also definitely about jay! Her 🐝 were screaming how it has nothing to do with Jay it's just music but this confirms my belief all along lol. Of course and the rest of the prior albums. Great analysis 👏🏽. When people love so young and stay with that 1 partner forever, they become emotionally dependent heavily on that partner and have such a misconstrued perception on true love. They'll be disappointed greatly and as they grow older, they take their partners mistakes at such grave lengths because they feel like I gave u myself since forever and this is how u treat me?! I think that's what happened when Jay cheated. Well when he was "caught". I'm sure he cheated without getting caught multiple times. Men like change. They commit once they're older and had multiple women already. But being with the same 1 forever is tough. Cheating isn't right but I'm just assuming that's what happened 😩.

      I agree on some level that this new album is a reformed beyonce, the result of the destruction of her marriage but the joy of who she is. I think it’s interesting it’s after the gift. Lemonade explored be soul, the gift her history and renaissance is an album about joy about love but not just about Jay about life, music, her family, confidence.

    I´ve never seen this channel before.
    I do love bey and her way of writing and how she approches things, and the way you got into this whole discography without leaving out her as a person, just makes me feel so understood.
    In her Music she does give away alot of information. What people don´t realize is also, that alot ot things she is talking about it happend a while ago. So everytime she is presenting it to us, she been trought the emotions. When Sean openly said he cheated and said, someting like "everybody needs their time" or "people are ready to different times" sort of, I knew she had to process it, she wanted to let the world know, but that she gave the paste.
    She also has a strong base. She loves life, and her mom really is appreciated. She does idealize Sean, because him and her dad are very similar just from a business point of view and probably the way they are moving. Also I think he is really helping her emotionaly and in the studio, they both have the same hobby, and as you said, he was very open about his emotions as well.. they do really love each other. And just from a standpoint of a woman, I often listened to No. 4, and I felt sorry, because she really is a perfectionist, and didn´t just wanted the relationship go, because of the public or other reasons, but because she dreamed about all of what she has in her life, since she was very young.
    AND she was really young when she met him, I seen an interview with her, where she was touring already alone and she was so child like, but on the stage sasha, if she knew it back then or not.
    I loved this Video, thank you! Subscribed :)

    13:57 "the use of the word *DRUNK* suggests something not so wholesome about that said love" - I'm sorry, respectfully no. This is hardly a symptom of a unhealthy relationship. She is using the metaphor of "drink" for discussing love in a very Rumi/Sufi way - you see, Rumi is their favorite poet, and wine/drink is prominently used for the main theme of Sufi literature - love. Those poems mostly urge the most sincere, unhindered expression of love and DRUNL IN LOVE the song is first song Beyoncé allowed herself to not hold back and really express herself without regard for kids listening. Like, this song is dirty but it is monumental at that time to have come out from Beyoncé but really she's just finally releasing herself in this Rumi way.
    Side note, I can't help but view EVERYTHING IS LOVE title and album from Rumi point of view. It's all love in this house.

    • @saintadamson
      @saintadamson  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love your interpretation especially with knowing that Rumi is Bey and Jay’s favourite couple. And I think it expresses a truth about their relationship. I still believe the song serves a part of the album narrative within BEYONCÉ about her growing sense of insecurity and isolation in her relationship, when treating the songs in context with the other songs of the album. I do think your point is beautiful in its own right and does sort of poke holes in the specific point I was making about the song - but I think it still works in context with my analysis of BEYONCÉ. Idk idk I really appreciate your perspective because I defo wouldn’t have made that Rumi connection 😭 Thanks for your comment 🙏🏾
