  • Welcome back to Pop Dissected! Today, we're going to be discussing Beyoncé's fourth studio record, "4". We're going to talk about how this record broke the alleged 'fourth album curse'.
Additionally, we're going to discuss how "4" led Beyoncé into a different direction with her musical intent. The apparent underperformance of "4" led Beyoncé to try new things with her music, as seen with her succeeding records "BEYONCE" and "Lemonade".

Hey folks! For clarification, the records I showcase to exemplify the "4th Album Curse" are not based upon my personal opinions. These are records I collectively saw brought up multiple times by individuals as I was reading more. I by no means intended to infer they are bad records, or "flops" - however, for one reason or another, these records were seen by some as not living up to the successes of the artists previous, or future records. My apologies if I didn't communicate that clearly enough! Also found it interesting to a lot of comments not knowing about the "4th Album Curse", I assumed a lot of people knew about it! 😳

The domestic abuse situation was the reason why it flopped, the sales were a noticeable decrease, and we all know the black community, which was a big fan base of Rihanna’s had a problem with her “snitching”. Outside of rude boy everything underperformed. Rated R had the same problem of 4, where other than the lead single, the rest of the album was more R@B or rock toned which went against the electro party popularity at the time. All of this contributed to its underperformance. Rated r is still top 3 for me though.

    • @FlowMoon__3
      @FlowMoon__3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +38

Also she was very much still going through the effects of the abuse situation during rated r, it was very fresh... her comeback album was definitely LOUD, which is my favorite album. And just like Beyoncé’s 4, rated R NEEDED to happen for Her next album to happen. Rihanna wanted to make an album where she was able to be free and happy, and colorful after her necessary healing from rated R.

There was a theme with Beyonces 4, and id say that was "classic". Something that NO ONE ever seems to notice (which irks me) is that all of 4s videos payed homage to a different decade. Run the world was the apocaplyptic millenium, best thing I never had was an homage to her 90s teen years and had black romcom vibes. Party had odes to the 80s, 1+1 was like the psychedelic 70s, countdown was clearly mod 60s, love on top was 50s motown bands, and dance for you was 40s noir. Interstesting that her last video was in the 40s, since 4 is her favorite number. My queen loves a theme

    The shifts in Beyoncé’s career:
_The Writings On The Wall_ (Destiny’s Child) - popularized the group, introduced them further into mainstream
_Survivor_ (Destiny’s Child) - first US number 1 album, DC recognized as a trio and one of the bestselling girl groups of all time
*Dangerously In Love* - Beyoncé’s solo debut, hit factory, recognized as a powerful force as a solo artist
*4* - managed herself, became an album artist, strongest vocals pre-motherhood
*BEYONCÉ* - visual album artist, surprise drop releases (no promotion), cared less about charts and more about artistry, first album as a mother, vocal transition due to child birth (female belt vocals lower but range widens, still able to hit higher notes with falsetto)
*Lemonade* - social consciousness and activism, shift in musical message
[ _EVERYTHING IS LOVE_ (The Carters) & _The Gift_ (Soundtrack) - another vocal belt shift due to birth of twins, music for the people, deeper connection to roots]

In this day and age when celebrities and public figures reveals too much about themselves and give the public/fans every detail about their personal lives then fans begin to take advantage and become too invested in their idol’s lives and begin to take advantage of that. Most pop fans weren't majorly exposed to Bey until IASF. So when that record blew up and everyone was calling her queen, a lot of them didn't "get the hype" like she was some overnight pop gurl. No ma'am. She's been a household name. R&b/hip hop radio had been spinning her records non-stop for a decade by then. Those pop fans weren't there when she burned the BET awards stage in '06 with no backup dancers, so of course they didn't get the hype at the time. lol But for her core demographic, "4" didn't miss a beat with 3 top five hits. BTINH, Party was an entire radio bop, and Love On Top the classic spent 6 weeks at #1. Although the release of "4" cut her pop radio success short, time has shown that choosing to stay true to her core audience worked out best for her in the long run. Cuz sis is selling out stadium tours without pop radio.

I've literally never heard of the fourth album curse before, and i don't know enough about most of the albums you mentionned as examples, but: witness was just messy and - as you said - kinda uninspired? Well actually, witness was over-inspired but the execution made every meaning get lost in translation. And the production was a weird mix of too generic and too out there. It didn't dare enough but at the same time wasn't just commercial enough sounding, if that makes any sense.
The second album i have something to say on is ARTPOP. Try and change my mind, but ARTPOP was just ahead of its time. Imagine if it was released in 2020 instead of Chromatica. It would arguably be even bigger than both Albums are right now.
The rollout at the time had giant flaws tho. The overhype that literally could only lead to disappointment, the bad/changing management, multiple lead single swaps (sexxx dreams and aura were considered before applause), and just gagas personal turmoil at the time, having just recovered from her hip injury and being quite into drugs made her very manic and kinda unfocused. Overall, ARTPOP was too out there, too ambitious and too messy, but as genuine as an edm album can get - and people seem to start and appreciate that recently.

I love that 4’s sucess or lack there of made Beyonce who she is today. Im glad the Beyonce fired her father as her manager and decide to manage her self, because he would’ve lowkey forced Beyonce to continue to make Top 40 radio hits singles which we’re seeing now with female artist Like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, even Taylor Swift, there’s seem to be an expiration date or age cap in which pop radio plays female artist music. So im she glad broke away from being a singles artist and more of an album artist it helped her create great body’s of work.
With that being said i do wish Beyonce would release one more “Pop Album” if you know what i mean. I think Beyonce is so hell bent on proving she’s above singles and is a “real artist” which is fine and she prooved that with Self Tiled and Lemonde, Homecoming, and Lion Kings/Black is King. But would it would kill her to release a radio friendly pop song with a great music video and some decent promotion 😂 because that’s another thing hate about this new Beyonce is that she DOESNT PROMOTE HERSELF. Looking at the way Taylor Swift Promotes her albums and slap her face on Apple Product and UPS Trucks i just wish Beyonce did the same thing just for one more album 😭

Also, I think this album’s success and commercial response was apart of the plan, utilizing her pregnancy to push the project than hit records, which would have created a lot of stress for a mom to be. You can tell from the video that the concept is well researched. Good job Pop Dissected.
My opinions on the subject is that 4 is not everyone's album. Its for us her DAY ONE FANS who fell in love with the incredibly vocally talented Bey in Destiny's Child, those of us who loved her R&B eras back in the early to mid 2000s, the Dangerously in Love album and the B'DAY album. 4 was indeed a throwback laced with maturity.
People love to say 4 flopped but if you asked them what album was selling 310,000 in its first week and platinum in its initial months of sale the only one that comes to mind is 21. Radio at the time was full of computer generated generic EDM music and Bey defied that and went with Traditional R&B music. The industry tried sabotaging her by leaking it before its release but still sold more than what artists at the time were doing (9 million worldwide to date).
4 remains my favourite Bey album vocally. You can tell the amount of work put into it from listening to the vocal layering.

This woman is a fearless and powerful artist, one of the great artists in music!
I don't believe in curses, I believe in hard work. If the artists work hard and well, doesn't matter how many álbums they released! I really appreciate the álbum 4. Sometimes the less successful álbums in sales are my favorites. And for someone like Beyoncé a "flop" is like someone having a big hit! She doesn't need to prove anything else!

I've been seeing that a lot. A sophomore slump is very much real, and I think is applicable to a lot more artists. However, the '4th Album Curse' is very much something headed by the internet, and not necessarily something that is applicable to most artists, only a select few - but enough for it to be labeled a 'curse'.

There was a supporting tour; though not formally called such. What made a massive impact was the tactical/strategic maneuvering. In 2012, she gave birth; did the Atlantic City shows and it looked like that was it. 2013 came around, the Presidential inauguration generated a lot of hype around her, with the Superbowl Halftime show to follow exactly a week later. She went on tour with no new music and 4 as her then latest offering. So it could be argued that that was the official tour. Even there, making a stop at the Chime for Change stage did great for her among other things because she did a 2 hour set for 80,000 people; which she hadn’t done before [with the exception of Glastonbury].

Fact check at 5:15-5:24 drunk in love and xo were released at the same time. Xo peaked at 45. drunk in love peaked at #2. Partition peaked at #23. With that said, her singles did chart of Self-titled. Its just no one really cared whether her singles charted or not by that point because everyone was invested in the entire album which was what Beyoncé was aiming for.

  • @rahmad21

Interesting 👀My very first Beyoncé CD that I bought is "4", I bought it when I was in middle school, and I remember 'Best Thing I Never Had' was a hit in Indonesia, especially in radio stations.
Btw, I do not really believe in the 4th album curse. For example, P!nk didn't really have one (right?), her Try This album was her third album but it earned her Grammy Awards. If the 4th album curse is real, let's wait and see Adele 4th album. And thank you for making this good video! 🙏

Like the DVD Live at Roseland and the live in atlantic city, she succeeded and a lot of the songs on the album became anthems or fan favourites! This album is a classic now :)
