    Episode Notes:
    1. Captured on real hardware.
    2. This episode was initially massive. 2 weeks' worth of capturing and writing. It was over an hour long. I cut it back because it was just too much. I have a lot saved so there will be new episodes based on the content I cut.
    3. There was a 4th Shining game called Shining Wind that was Japanese only.
    4. I honestly have mixed feelings about the first 2 Yakuza games. There are things I really enjoy, but there are also things I really dislike.
    5. A lot of people love to shit on some of these games but I felt many were nowhere near as bad as some claim. I mean there is a difference between a game that isn't good and one that is claimed to be terrible.
    6. If you find yourself in the market for Sega games on the PS2, many of these are quite affordable. Should you run up against something really expensive, typically the Japanese version will be much cheaper.

    Man... even to this day- it feels so strange hearing how Sega ended up and basically making games on its competitors machines.
    I started with the master system then mega drive with all upgrades like mcd,32x, then Saturn and of course dreamcast. Very well loved machines that were being used at least 16 hours a day constantly.
    Eventually after marrying and f%$*ing up big in my life- i had to sell my collection for peanuts.... sure, i had rare games or demo disks like keio flying squadron. But understand these units were not looked after in terms of mint (or garage queens if we talked in car lingo) condition units played once a year.... no they were my best and only friend in my school years!!
    They were very temperamental when sold. Half the time never bootin up. Well loved, well worn etc... played till destruction per say. I really could of gotten much more and have deep regret to this day.
    However i am VERY VERY grateful for emulation.
    I have my entire collection plus all my favourite arcades running on my phone - with an 8bitdo mini controller hanging from my car interior mirror, with the Bluetooth providing the sound from my car stereo....
    Thank god. I am happy with this. I may not have the "physical" copy of whatever in my hand- but instead i have access to all the arcade games there and then and for free,!!!
    Its amazing. And thank you.
    And as for Sega trying to survive after the dreamcast
    .... yeah this hurt and sucked as an avid Sega fan... and sure it was alien almost seeing them publish games this way; but you gotta understand there situation and business forecast.
    Totally get it...
    Sega is not the company it used to be.
    Understand time moves on, and changes everything.
    Nintendo i believe will be the next in the coming years but they are genuine genius at marketing old technology to use in a more ambiguous setting.
    Listen- don't worry if my comment seems convoluted...
    Sega should of survived the dreamcast age because how far ahead they were.
    Sony capitalised on the 'stupidz' in regards too softwares.
    I love Sega and today i know they really are not who they were back then...but who does not love an underdog,?
    BTW- PlayStation 2 versions of dreamcast games are usually far poorer.... but back then if you wanted to play a certain platform but owned another.... this was all you had.
    Long live emulation.
    You allowed me to sell my collection in desperation- but still play every single game with just a few clicks.
    For that i will forever be grateful.
    Thanks!!

      For me, some games were played so much that they stopped working for some reasons so finding emulator versions bought back the feel. I still have the Sega Genesis in my room but all TVs and its power source don't work with it anymore... Despite this, I refuse to sell because eventually I heard there were some HD models able to run the cartridges still working but ouch the price and scalper-jerks these days....

      Sega was destined to fail. Launching systems because they were scared of the competition. Putting all their eggs in the arcade basket was a death sentence. When Sega advertised, it was always a hook like, "Bring the arcade experience home." Of course they had more than just arcade games, the competition was so much better at advertising than they were.

      It really sucks that we would only find out once the Dreamcast was discontinued that the DC was drawing better graphics than the PS2, anyway. SONY won the console wars through de facto fraud and anti-competitive practices straight out of NINTENDO's playbook. In the end, the PS2's paltry 4MB VRAM (vs. 16MB for Dreamcast) left many textures economized and blurry, losing so much game detail and slowing down movement in some stages. Most of the PS2's titles would only draw about 1-2 million polygons/sec because SONY had shifted most of the rendering work from the GPU to the CPU, producing janky and blurred images in actual gameplay. And the PS2 & PS3 were even harder to program effectively than the infamous Saturn!

      PCSX2 runs pretty good if you have a decent computer. I own a PS2 with a component video cable but besides my older HD TV I don't really have anything that I can hook it up to. I bought one of those HDMI upscalers and it looks AWFUL.
      So once I bought a gaming PC I have decided to just emulate PS2 upscaled. PCSX2 runs pretty well and It handles most games I've thrown at it just fine. I have a DVD drive for my PC so I can just hook it up and play my PS2 discs in the emulator.
      If you have a PC with a GPU and a CPU with multiple cores you can probably handle PCSX2 just fine.

    I do think Sega had an interesting strategy that generation of releasing exclusive games on each system. Its sad their output has drastically dropped these days and most of their output other than a new Sonic game every few years are mainly either Yakuza games or games picked up from publishers and developers they picked up since then like Atlus and the ones that makes the total war games and football manager.

    SEGA still has left behind many franchises, always re-releasing the same titles over and over. SEGA Ages for the PS2 had Phantasy Zone and Space Harrier released in separate volumes, why didn't they think of bringing the classic Shining Force/Holy Ark, Shinobi and more, instead they want us to get Columns and other more obscure titles people wouldn't have missed if never released.
    The Yakuza captures are in widescreen but is squished to 4:3 here, just wanted to point that out.

  • @cnhnx

    I know it's easy to constantly connecting and comparing Yakuza/Like A Dragon with Shenmue for both being from Sega and having that semi-open world with brawler combat formula. But they came from completely different mind with completely different inspiration. I even heard story of how Sega hesitated to greenlight Yakuza because of Shemue's financial failure so the creator had to gamble his own career just to convince his higher-ups. If that the story is true then Shenmue's existence hindered Yakuza more than helping it, or even inspired its creation like most people think.

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think you are broaching two different subjects here. Toshihiro Nagoshi's vision and intension is not the same as being directly influenced by the programming and design of Shenmue. Nagoshi worked with Sega AM2 on Shenmue, as well as other games that influenced Yakuza like Spikout. His idea was different for what he wanted for Yakuza, but his past games are most certainly at the core DNA of it. I mean if you look at the credits of Yakuza, so many of that team worked on other AM2 projects. To say there was no influence flies in the face of mountains of evidence to the contrary. They are two different games made by many of the same people. Influence was unavoidable, really.

    • @cnhnx
      @cnhnx ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SegaLordX I wouldn't deny influences from Nagoshi and his team's past experience especially in technical level.
      But I just want to correct a misconception that some people have; that Sega (the company) made Yakuza because they want to have another Shenmue. That's why I brought up the story about Sega's initial rejection to Nagoshi's plan. In the end while the influences are there I want people to acknowledge Yakuza more as Nagoshi's brainchild just like how we associate Shenmue with Yu Suzuki and not "Oh it's just more mature Shenmue".

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol, fair enough, but I don't think anyone who has played the two games would ever think Yakuza was just more Shenmue. I mean the core of those games are similar but the content is quite a bit different. I'd even argue that Nagoshi's departure from AM2 was because he wanted Shenmue to be more like the eventual Yakuza. Yu wanted an epic. Nagoshi wanted a crime drama. Shenmue certainly had a profound influence on those making Yakuza, but the notion Sega wanted another Shenmue isn't what I'd call a common assertion. I mean look what Shenmue III had to go through to get made. And we are almost guaranteed to never see a part 4 in Yu's lifetime.

    • @cnhnx
      @cnhnx ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SegaLordX Indeed. By "some people" I mean those who only took a glance at both games, well at least they're not as bad as those who tried to compare Yakuza to GTA or Sleeping Dogs lol. I know it's a function of a longer active lifespan and larger audience as much as anything, but one of the many embittering aspects of this time was the distinct sense that Sega was going all-out supporting the PS2 harder than they ever did the Dreamcast. Compare that Genesis collection to what we got in the Smash Pack. Look at how much care and extra content Sega put into VF4 compared to every fighter they'd ever released on their own consoles. And see PS2 fans getting served up heaping helpings of fan-favourite IPs like Shinobi, Altered Beast, Golden Axe, After Burner, Fantasy Zone, Phantasy Star remakes etc. etc. etc. Sure, they didn't all hit the mark, but it really felt like Sega were just handing PS2 owners tons of what their core fanbase in Saturn & Dreamcast owners had spent years begging for, while largely being ignored.

    Really had fun with that Samurai Jack: The Shadow of Aku though maybe because I was really into the cartoon, it's a shame that I never delved much deeper into the SEGA specific library as there were a few Shining games that came out on the PS2 absolutely loved the Mega Drive ones, and who knows maybe if I picked up Yakuza back then those Final Fantasy's may not have gotten their claws into me.

    I've wanted to play Shining Force Tears since before it was released. I didn't care so much that it wasn't a tactical RPG like its predecessors, its art and coop had me sold. Then it came out, I saw the reviews, and I skipped it. I think this game was not shown the respect it deserved at the time.
    I've been getting my GF into gaming, little by little. This game fits perfectly into a small niche, so I was excited to play it with her. Only problem, I really don't like when games get clever with the second player option, hiding the option within the game itself (like Secret Of Mana). Honestly, we couldn't figure out player 2, so we started playing other games where player 2 wasn't hidden.
    We'll return some day.

    I really like to look at early sega ps2 games, because they feel in many ways like games that would've come out for dreamcast. So it's kind of a "what if" scenario. It would only be natural for some of these games to have had there development started on dreamcast and then moved to other systems.
