Yes and no. Key titles like Sonic and Virtua Fighter was missing. That’s what made it hard to be a Sega fan those days. I was always content with having a Sega console as I got my 3rd party fix, but was keen on my Sega games 1sr. When they spread them selves across 3 consoles like they did, it wasn’t easy. If you were Sonic fan you would go GameCube if you a an arcade fan you would go Xbox, but then you had the PlayStation exclusives like Ferrari 355 or Virtuafighter. Not everyone wants 3 consoles.

Otogi 1 and 2, as well as Panzer Dragoon Orta, have been remastered in the form of "Xbox Enhanced" backwards compatibility on the newer Xbox systems. You can play all of them in 4K on the Xbox One X or Series X. Otogi 1 and 2 are still 4:3 30fps but definitely a big jump in visual quality. PD Orta is full 16:9 4K60! They all look great.

I think the Xbox got the most love from Sega when they transitioned into a third party developer. Maybe it was a gratitude thing from when they put Windows CE on the Dreamcast? Who knows.
For multiplatform titles the Xbox always did seem to get the best versions irrespective of who developed them.

I find it interesting because I grew up as a Sega Kid, but when my brother defected to sony and sold our Saturn. alot of my days of Sega gaming had left (other than me keeping the Genesis console...which I still have). But when my brother eventually got an Xbox, i wouldn't be lying if i said I was envious of some of the games. Panzer Dragoon Orta was amazing (and i still think looks great), and I had been wanting to play a Shenmue game since it had been announced, so playing Shenmue II was a treat (even thoug I never really got too far...and would just get stuck playing Lucky Hits). And then of course Phantasy Star Online 1 & 2 came along, which i wished I could have played since I was a huge fan of the PS series. Sadly around the time of 2004, i started college, and I felt like my gaming took a backseat to taking part in the college experience (namely doing school work, practicing, and being part of my student ministry), so more of the Sega games that came out around this time I had missed. Though eventually I did get to experience OutRun 2SP in the arcade at my local Gameworks (Rest in Peace), and loved it because, it was an updated OutRun with more fun gameplay. Eventually i did buy a copy on PS2, and I was stoked!
Luckily today, most of the games discussed that I was interested in Ive been able to play now. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Looking forward to seeing whats next.

Outside milking Sonic, and rereleasing mega drive games on a constant basis, it’s just not the same Sega anymore. Yu Suzuki had to crowdfund himself the budget for Shenmue 3, streets of rage 4 was licensing deal some French enthusiast paid Sega to do. We haven’t had a new Crazy Taxi since 3, no new outrun since 2006, no new Virtua fighter for 10 years. And that’s just old IP they aren’t redoing. When did Sega develop anything new for the first time? Technically they exist, but they aren’t really contributing that much to the scene anymore, just surviving on legacy.

Sega needed a debt-free $500 million bailout from the chairman of their former parent company to transition to 3rd party, instead of shutting down home console development completely. Sega could have outright died in 2001, or they could have completely focused on their arcade/amusement business, which we all know shut down a couple years ago. Sega is very lucky they still exist today, along with Sega fans

Good review! It was a sad time when Sega left the console market back then, but I was glad to see them develop games for other platforms! I never owned an XBox so I missed out on most of these titles. I'm not sure if some of these were ever released on modern consoles (or Steam), but would love to check them out!
I only had a GameCube during the sixth gen, but the Cube got a number of great Sega games on it as well. I loved Billy Hatcher, Sonic Gems Collection, Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2, Sonic Mega Collection, Puyo Pop Fever, and F-Zero GX!

Outrun 2 coast to coast is the nearest to perfection in the arcade driving genre. When you get in the zone and pull off drift after drift with the fantastic music its just feels so good and actually relaxing in a way. The graphics, sound and playability are unmatched to this day imho. Some of the burnout games come close but cant really be described as relaxing.

Gun Valkyrie would be really great with modern controllers with paddles. It was never going to be accepted with having to push R3 for flight. Sega will never revisit the game of course, but perhaps Microsoft could bring this and these other Sega games to Gamepass

So many gems so many classics and we never got this level of greatness from Sega outside this generation. I played a majority of these and never knew From Soft published the Otogi series! It makes so much sense with how fun and difficult the series is. I have never heard anyone speak on the series and had to put a few of my friends on to the games. So traversal was fluid and smooth, gameplay was butter and the fun factor extremely high for an action slasher!

I'd like to see a video on MISTer. I bought one and it's phenomenal. A dream come true for the retro gamer. I thought emulation on my high-end PC was more-or-less perfect but it doesn't compare well with MISTer. The games run like the real hardware. There's none of the lag in animation you get with software emulation. I can run CPS1, CPS2, Neo Geo, Irem games and others at 1080P with very nice scanlines. I can play Sega CD, PC Engine CD, SNES, Genesis etc. It's expensive but worth it and there's CPS3, Taito F3 and Saturn cores on the way.

I'm very fascinated with that time period since that's right around when I was old enough to start buying my own systems and games. PS2 and 6th gen's identity is the last hurrah for Japan as the dominant game development region. PS2 had the mainstream Japan IPs, while Xbox had a lineup of Japanese titles that you wouldn't really see from a AAA Western developer. 7th gen to present has been ruled by FPS, sandbox, scripted "cinematic" TPS from the West, while Japan had an uphill battle transitioning to HD AAA gaming
