I think the system has some good games, but I'm also sort of bitter since it was the beginning of games chasing casual gamers with endless tutorials that treat you like a moron, almost every game having brown/grey graphics, a majority of games being shooters/sports/racing games, and so many amazing franchises from the PS2 era and before completely died off because they couldn't sell in the primarily casual market. Some of those problems have been fixed since then with subsequent generations, but others are still an issue to this day.

Recently hit 400 games in my PS3 library, PS3 will never die! The ability this thing had in it's end-life able to push out games that looked as good as early PS4 titles, the fact it had backwards compat, the fact it has the BEST soundchip of any home console, and forward thinking technology built in. Just perfection.

For me the last console that really made me go "wow" was a Sega Dreamcast back in 1999. It was such a massive upgrade over PS1 visually. After it, the PS2 felt really underwhelming and just more of the same. PS3 was like an HD PS2. I still loved my ps3 for some great games (Fallout 3, Demon's Souls, etc.) and streamlined online capabilities(COD multiplayer), it was fun. PS4, PS5 though.. nothing really too memorable

Hope Sony wises up on marketing and keeps the digital store open for all eternity, so amazing games like the PS3 Mickey Mouse: Castle of Illusion keep being accessible to new generations of gamers

The PS4 was a great console, better than the PS3 in my opinion, but the selection of titles was much, much smaller and less interesting overall. Aside from Bloodborne, the PT demo, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake, there was nothing else on the console that I personally felt like was both an exclusive and worth playing. Any multi-platform release from this gen was better either on PC or Switch.

The PS3 didn't have the same personality as the PS1, PS2, or the PS4 for me. That whole generation felt really lacking in creativity and variety I think and I was glad to see it finally end. It was definitely a low point when it came to my interest in games and was the PlayStation console I picked up the fewest games for. The library on the PS4 was a lot more interesting thankfully.

Totally agreed, it was basically the "Casual Generation". The Wii was trying to get casual grandparents to play and the PS3/360 were trying to get casual brodudes to play, with actual gamers sort of being left in the dust for the most part.

Completely disagree with that, the PS4 gen felt like a far more uninspired and lacking gen for a long time, nearly all the big Sony exclusives were third person cinematic/open world games for almost all the consoles life cycle until like 2020 with Dreams and Persona 5 Royal (even Persona 5 is a PS3 game as well). Of course PS3 had many third person cinematic games too but it had games like LittleBigPlanet, Motorstorm 1 and Pacific Rift, Warhawk, Resistance, Killzone 2 and Demon's Souls fairly early on in it's life cycle whereas PS4 just didn't have that (apart from Bloodborne), no first person shooters that were great, no high class racing games, no real online exclusive. I'm not talking about indie games here though, they've gone from strength to strength but the triple A library was disappointing.
There was also a massive lack of real high quality new IPs and creativity compared to the previous gen, in the PS3 gen we had Bioshock, Portal, Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, Dead Space, Mass Effect, Crysis, Saints Row, Skate, LittleBigPlanet, Dragon Age, Batman Arkham, Borderlands, Souls games, Bayonetta, L.A. Noire, Dishonored, Minecraft, Last of Us. That is simply way better than what we got last gen. Part of looking back at every gen is to see what new great franchises and IPs came out of the generation and the PS4 was very lacklustre in the amount of big new, top class ones. The PS4 gen was also the nadir (well so far anyway) of things like live service games, loot boxes and microtransactions the latter two of which I just absolutely hate.

@@ashleythomas4112 Let's be honest, PlayStation has never been about the Sony first party games in the first place (unlike Nintendo), it's always been the third party games that keep them alive. Most of the games you listed were either shooters, racing games, or games with no color in them, which was a massive issues with the PS3 generation that crippled the industry for a while. Saying that the PS4 doesn't have high quality shooters or online games doesn't really matter, because those are the lowest common denominator when it comes to games anyways. I enjoy the rare shooter like Doom or Half Life, but I'd never pick a shooter over, say, an RPG, or a platformer. PS4 has simply had much more variety when it comes to games. You've got Bloodstained, Danganronpa V3, Dragon Quest XI, all of the Yakuza games, Shenmue III, the Trials of Mana remake, Ys VIII and IX, the new World Ends With You game, etc. etc. Contrast that with the PS3, where EVERYTHING was a sports/shooter/racer mixed with browns and greys.
In terms of those new PS3 franchises, while stuff like Bioshock and Bayonetta are great, the rest you listed range from bad to okay, with a few goods like Minecraft. I think based around the games you listed that you're into casual games a lot more, and since the PS3 generation was entirely focused around casual games you preferred it. I don't mean that in a derogatory sense, there's nothing wrong with liking casual games, but I just think it explains our differing mindsets here.
Let's not forget that the PS3 was the advent of predatory DLC practices, with a lot of it being on-disc DLC developed before the game was even done.
Overall, I know there's still a ton of casual games on the PS4 (like all of the open world games you mentioned) that are mostly made by western triple A developers, but creativity and variety have been on a steady increase. It's nowhere near SNES/PS1/PS2 levels, but it's still an improvement, at least.

Joe, that install-upon-booting thing with Heavenly Sword confuses me. I just recently played that game for the first time on my Super Slim model, and that never once happened to me after the initial install with the update patch. I have no idea what that's about.
In any case, I'd recommend the last of the Motorstorm games, Motorstorm Apocalypse, if you want a good version of that title, since I think that series got better with each installment.
Apart from that, I would have mentioned Drakengard 3, the Ratchet and Clank titles, Infamous 1 and 2, Trinity: Souls of Zill'Oll (an interesting, flawed gem of an action game), Ni no Kuni, the "Tales of" titles, and the PS3 port of Eternal Sonata, but the last few ones of those are RPGs, so I understand how those could be too time consuming.

All of your recommendations are great. And I'm going to put another heavy recommendation for Motorstorm Apocalypse. While it has some dudebro, "Xtreme" sports in the presentation. The actual racing is soo much fun. The game was unfortunately released right after the Fukashima stuff in Japan so Sony didn't really advertise it since the game features disasters and they felt it was in bad taste at that time. But during the races, the tracks morph between laps as planes crash, huge waves flood areas, and buildings collapse. It's one of, if not the best arcade racer on the PS3.

@@badazzboxer The NES was absolutely "retro" when it was the same age (about 20 years ago), but people are more reluctant now to call games "retro" so soon.
Is it because we're getting older, and 15-20 years seems a lot shorter than it used to?
Or because technology doesn't deliver the same leaps as before? (Consider how Crysis is still so modern after 14 years... the same age that Star Fox on SNES was when Crysis came out.)
It's weird to think that the original Xbox and the PS3 are as old now as the Magnavox Odyssey and Atari 2600 were, respectively, back in the early '90s.
Or that a good PC from 10-15 years ago is still usable today, when the equivalent in 2000 would be an impossibly archaic relic from the '80s, with just 1 MB of RAM, and no hope of running a current OS.

A lot of people use "retro" to just mean "old/vintage", however, and looking now, the dictionary definitions do seem to allow for it, even if it's not the primary idea behind the word.
(The mention of "recent past" in that definition is interesting. I guess that's to clarify that the style of the 1970s is retro, but the style of the actual 70s is not!)
