The reason TMNT is such a good franchise is because it’s been able to reinvent itself and adap and do unique things every new incarnation.

Ask air bringing up tmnt in his whole argument about reboots needing to stick to the creators original vision and sticking to old fans is funny because like you said the franchise’s existence invalidates his argument.
Tmnt didn't stick to the vision of eastman and Laird ever since the 87 show and from there the series kinda just been reinventing itself constantly.
To the point that 40 years later id argue the brand hasnt been stronger. I seriously don't know many more series that are as consistent as the turtles.

@@Optimegatrongodzilla I find both properties to be good in my opinon but like ... I don't really get what you're trying to say. Rise and Mutant Mayhem are major departures yes but the former really suffered more for getting a lot of money poured into it and appearing right after the 2012 show. The series also wasn't being pushed much across toys and was shuffled to timeslots that didn't help get more eyes on it at all despite being very expensive to make. Even with all that a lot of people turned around on Rise by the time the movie came out and it got a lot of eyes and an award. Mutant Mayhem on the other hand was one of the most sucessful movies of last year. Was very well-liked and recieved plus was in the same year the franchise got a billion dollars. @paulgilbert5278 As someone who loves both Donnie's, Rise Donnie isn't apathetic. Rise Donnie is an Autistic character who shows his caring side in different ways that aren't Neurotypical. Like how he gives gifts to help his brothers even if it doesn't go well or how he does things like give head pats to Mikey. Donnie expresses empathy in a different way due to being Autistic, but it doesn't mean he doesn't care about his brothers. We see a lot throughout the show that Rise Donnie deeply cares about his brothers and their well being. From saving his brothers continously to how that one Purple Dragons episode he freaked out over his brothers getting hurt. Also, how protective he is of his younger brother Mikey is absolutely precious! Rise Donnie does care and isn't apathetic. Honestly, 2003 and Rise Donnie's would probably get along! In his downfall of 2012 TMNT, he compares almost everything in the show to the 2003 turtles. It breaks my heart that so many fans straight up hate on Rise for being different...but then will praise Mutant Mayhem and call it a return to form when it does A LOT of what Rise did as well. The boys fumbling their missions, messing, up, acting more like teenagers then before, Mikey being introspective and less of a jokester, Raph loving fighting and having less of a toxic temper but still being the hothead nonetheless, Leo being allowed to make jokes and be less of a stick in the mud, Donnie being a big nerd in pop culture sense as well as the STEM sense. Why it is ok for Mutant Mayhem to do these things, but not for Rise of the TMNT to do the same? Not disparaging Mutant Mayhem. Even if it isn't personally for me, I can still see how fans can love it, and how it does do great in its own way. Mutant Mayhem wouldn't be what it is without Rise. It's a shame that both MM and Rise fans can't get along and support each other.
And I don't get the larger TMNT fandom either. WHY GET SO PISSED OFF THAT EVERYTHING ISN'T ALWAYS 100% THE EXACT SAME? YOU ALREADY HAVE FOUR VERSIONS WITH THE DYNAMIC THAT YOU WANT, WHY CAN'T YOU EMBRACE SOMETHING NEW? Hell, Batman fans love both the hoaky 60s version. Batman is allowed to have a...steampunk version, a goofy silver age comic version (the Brave and the Bold), a cyberpunk version (Batman Beyond), a version where BRUCE WAYNE dies instead of his parents, a film noir version (Batman TAS), a 1940s version (Batman: caped crusader), and Batman fans don't complain. Each version was beloved and given a chance.
But TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES? NOW we have STANDARDS? Ridiculous standards, no less. Need I remind people that the OG 1987 show that jump started this whole franchise was silly as hell?
I will always stand for Rise. It deserves better then the hate it STILL gets and the creators still want to continue the show. The more people keep showing love for it the better. Honestly, I'd say even things you mentioned among core TMNT elements aren't really that necessary:
    1. Bandanas colors - Mirage Turtles all had red ones and IDW Turtles too at the beginning and I didn't see any fans whining about that.
    2. Their main foe should be the Shredder - yeah, but no. 2003 TMNT biggest problem for me was that writers kept bringing Shredder back just in different forms. Then finally Fast Forward season did something different, but the people hated it. There was a plan to make a Triceraton Shredder possesed by Ch'rell in that season, thank goodness that was scrapped.
    3. April should be their first human friend - not that important, I mean Casey was actual first Turtles friend in IDW comics, so it doesn't really matter.
I think the only important rule creators should follow when doing a Turtles story is to treat them seriously. That's why I hate Turtles Forever, because 87 Turtles were treated like shit due to Peter Laird's bias and hatred towards them.

    • @TheOGCrit
      @TheOGCrit  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +30

I definitely see what you’re saying. I only bring up the bandana colors because the Mirage turtles did have all red, but they were the original, and a lot has changed since then. Now the colored bandanas feel way more synonymous with the turtles than the red ones
With the Shredder, I may have misspoken. Rather then being their main or their greatest foe, he should, more often than not, be their most personal foe, for whatever reason that may be, either avenging Hamato Yoshi’s death or because Shredder does something to earn the gang’s ire.
I still maintain that April should be their first human friend more often than not. Casey would be the second best choice, but one of the two should be the first to meet them since they’re the two most important human allies.
I would say tho that the turtles don’t NEED to be treated 100% seriously per se. Cause the 1987 series does have its fans without being that serious (Red Sky seasons notwithstanding)

@TheOGCrit 1. I understand, I love bandanas and I get it that normies usually separate the Turtles only by that, but at the same time it just looks like people don't care about Turtles personalities, even though they were explored many times beyond four stereotypes.
      2. Yeah, I agree. I just laugh or feel annoyed people want only Shredder as if they aren't or won't be any other big baddies. That's why people bashed 2007 movie and Rise which I find stupid since they did just fine without the cheese greater(for Rise I'm talking about season 1)
      3. I mean, there's nothing particulary wrong with keeping this rule, but most of the time it just hurt April's character since she was usually depicted just as "Turtles first human friend" which made people not care about her as a character.
      4. Now I may have misspoken. When I said "serious" I meant the story treating itself seriously or it would've turned into a parody. I mean, there's enough people thinking TMNT is some dumb shit for drooling kids, it would be worse if there would be TMNT media that would not make jokes, but straight up mocking TMNT as a concept, its history and its fanbase.

I never saw much of 1987, but even I know that Raph wasn’t “the angry one” as I’m pretty sure the first turtle live action movie was the one that set up the dynamic up of Leo the leader, Raph the muscle, Mikey the jokester, and Donnie the brains. I didn't like Rise, I have tried to several times, but it just doesn't click with me, it just made too many changes for my liking. Does that make me close-minded? Maybe. But that doesn't mean the show it's bad tho, technically it's gorgeous, the animation is bonkers in Rise, literally top notch, those animators really went crazy, not only that but Rise has a very loyal, passionate and dedicated fanbase, so if there's so many people who like it, then how bad can it be? It's not like it's the Next Mutation lol. Even I can admit that it's necesaary to change things up every once in a while to keep things fresh and interesting, I know what Rise tried to do and I appreciate and respect that, obviously that doesn't mean that everyone will or have to like it, but it had to be done at some point. Like, I've been enjoying what they're doing with the Mutant Mayhem universe and I can't wait for more, even if it's very different from most TMNT versions. TMNT literally became popular because they changed a lot of stuff from the original comics, so it's literally on the DNA of the franchise. Everyone has their opinion and no one is less of a fan because of that. The only cases when that applies is when they're hating for the sake of hating with no arguments, straight up lies or fake facts or some shady stuff like the April race thing.

THE ANIMATION. MY BROTHER IN CHRIST ARE WE WATCHING THE SAME SHOW!? Also not watching it because Raph is big in the show is just a little weird. There’s other dumb reasons I’ve seen but it would take too long to type so imma say this. There are reasonable reasons for not liking Rise such as you don’t like the storyline, the pacing is too fast(although this one being reasonable is a little stretch), and just not being interested in it but not liking a show just for the art style, character roles (unless it’s genuinely unreasonable), designs, and because you’re clouded by nostalgia are NOT reasonable reasons. Also I mean this in no way is to hate on anyone but it’s how I view this whole thing if you have a different outlook good for you.

By the time Rise took off, I remember being in college when my professor showed off the first episode, saying it was the best show to kick off that year, visually appealing and the action was astonishing. I was in an art college, so of course we had fun looking into media at the time.
But it was around the same time that I rarely had tv usage/online at home, I had to share a room with a sibling who hogs the tv, the only cable was the living room in which my father was always in.

I am a guy who grew up with the VHS copies of the 87 TMNT, and grew up watching 2003 and it's stuff. When I heard in highschool that Nick was doing a new version? I was hyped and loved it out the gate. By the time Rise came out, I didn't have the means to really watch it outside of clips but I was honestly confused at the hate it was getting, the designs were pretty dang awesome in my biased opinion. I was also hyped for Ralph to be the leader because he was my favorite because my dumb lizard brain likes the color red, and from what I know, he actually was pretty solid as not just a leader but a caring older brother. That the series also had some of the most crisp animation I had ever seen with some solid character dynamics was just icing on top. "Newest" TMNT thing I have seen is Batman vs TMNT, and again, I loved it and could gush. Haven't seen the new stuff but I say let it flow, TMNT is a franchise that I am happy see get new versions to reach new audiences because it is just a fun time. If people like whatever version was their version growing up, I won't hold it against them but they need to let others have their fun too. And nothing stops people from reaching across the varied forms of the series and sharing to show why each version is special to them and others

Of the animated iterations, 2003 is my favorite and it's mostly not close tbh, I love the old Eastman and Laird comics and I feel it is by far the closest to capturing the essence of them and bringing that to the small screen, not only that it expands upon those comics with lots of unique new elements and maybe recontextualizing older ones to either flesh them out further or just make them a little more sensible, as the OG comics were rooted in satire and sometimes over the top for the sake of it, and best of all it didn't talk down to it's audience regardless of age and they pushed as much as they could past the radar as could be tolerated for a Y7 show, especially one on 4Kids I love the art style, sound track, one of the few 4Kids shows that I feel is almost perfectly casted, seriously I think everyone especially the four turtles actors all nail what their character is all about, I'm not sure it prefer to the Mirage TMNT but I do think it's my favorite time ever seeing them animated.
All this aside I love TMNT as a whole and the variation of the various series' is it's greatest strengths there are things I really love about 87, Rise, 2012, that just don't have a place in 2003 and that's 100% fine, change is what's kept this franchise fun for 40 years, and his ignorance to this makes fans of my favorite cartoon of all time btw look awful as well as stupid, I want you to know not everyone who likes 03 acts like this.

i really hope people stop being so close minded when it comes to newer tmnt iterations. blind criticism has already gotten one series cancelled, who says it won’t happen again?

Also, I just want to bring this up cause this piece of misinformation makes me feel like I'm having an aneurism. making the statement of making April black as race swapping. This is hugely misinformation, and I blame this on the one articles taking tweets from the og creators with no context with the image of April's 2nd comic book iteration when, in actuality, the creators were talking about her first appearance. Now, in case some people are confused, go watch the 2014 documentary, Turtle Power: The Definitive History of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. But in short, April's first comic book appearance in name, was named after April Fisher, Kevin Eastmans, former wife, then girlfriend at the time, and while in appearance April 'O Neil did not take after the real April Fisher it seemed there was a conflict as to what race they wanted to make her, cause one creator said they envisioned her as white, while the other said they envisioned her as Asian and it's pretty obvious from her ambiguous appearance about that conflict. But, here comes the but, April's second appearance in the early years of the comics was supposed to look like the real April Fisher, and for context, April Fisher was infact black and white mixed it was evident that's what they went for in the comics by giving her curly black/brown hair, bigger lips and they gave her dark skin both on the cover and in the original colored versions of the comics. So there you go, April's race, while not exactly black or white, didn't exactly have a right or wrong answer, and that includes if you designed her to be Afrocentric. I want people to stop claiming April being black is blackwashing or raceswapping cause that's just not true cause even the creators didn't know what to make her.

    SPOILER ALERT:
14:15 This is funny because the cartoon he adores is TMNT 2003. Its version of Shredder is not even the REAL Oroku Saki. It's the sadistic criminal Utrom Ch'rell. The actual Saki didn't factor in as a main villain until S5. The Turtle's battles and struggles weren't against Saki but Ch'rell. It deviated from the source material to tell a new story. And it was sick.

As someone who loves the 2003 TMNT series it really is sad seeing fans only able to dislike the changes of the modern show. I will admit it’s my personal favorite iteration but all versions of the show have great aspects. Heck my favorite Turtle is Mikey and his 2012 self is my favorite iteration even above 2003 (though that version is still great). It just sucks 2003 fans are being like old 90s fans and never wanting change from what they grew up with. Heck even those fans aren’t as bad as this guy is with the stuff in rise or 2012.

This is literally what the Rise S1 finale was about. The Turtles try conforming to the traditional “Hamato Way” because they think it’ll make them better fighters, only to discover that doing “their own thing” is what helps them win in the end.
If that isn’t a direct middle finger to uppity TMNT traditionalists, idk what is.

I’m a huge fan of 2012, but I can also acknowledge it has flaws. I also love Rise, but again, I can acknowledge it had flaws and was done a MASSIVE disservice by Nickelodeon. But the beauty of this franchise is that every version has something to offer for everyone- whether it be the storytelling, the animation or the characters, each iteration creates new versions that have since become iconic!!
    It’s also very ironic cuz I REALLY didn’t like ‘03 😂😂😂😂

2003 is my favorite iteration, but I enjoy Rise and Mutant Mayhem a lot BECAUSE of their differences to 2003. Rise shakes up the dynamics and characters in fun new ways while having some amazing animation, and Mutant Mayhem is a heartfelt story about kids wanting to fit in.
This franchise has always been innovating and changing in exciting ways, heck, even though 2003 is super faithful to the original comics, they still make unique changes that fit with that show's world, such as Shredder being an Utrom, it might sound ridiculous on the outside, but the way the flesh it out makes Ch'rell a terrifying Shredder.

Only pointing this out because it serves the point about change often being good for the tmnt, but the original comics had them all as red. It didn't matter as much because they comics were in black and white. The addition of the colored headbands was still a great decision though.

As someone who grew up watching the 2007 movie, 2012 show, Batman vs TMNT, rise, and enjoys Mutant Mayhem, I respect that each version has its own unique way to tell their stories. If we can have different versions and stories of Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man, then we can have different interpretations of TMNT

The same reason Sonic does. There's so many different continuities of him, and even different eras of the games treat the cast differently. Everyone grew up with different eras of Sonic, and have different beliefs on what Sonic should be like based on that. Same with TMNT. Some like the goofy Classic Turtles. Some like the more serious 03 Turtles. Some like 2012. And some like Rise.

Okay so I'm a new fan to the TMNT and I'm an adult so... I like to think I'm quite impartial bc I didn't grow up watching the TMNT so I don't have nostalgia blinding me. I watched Mutant Mayhem in the cinema SOLELY because the animation looked cool. Later in time I was slumped and I had nothing to watch so... I gave Rise a try and... here I am! I was introduced to the TMNT world through MM and Rise and I have seen the rest afterwards. And I'm gonna be super honest here: but watching the turtles fight Shredder and Krang over and over and over can get quite... tiring. Specially bc neither are particularly compelling as villains. I watched the different iterations in no particular order but my favourite arcs are the ones in which we deviate from the standard formula of TMNT. In 2012 I loved the first part of the 4 season when they're in space having adventures with the Fugitoid and in 2003 I loooved the Battle Nexus arc. And after consuming pretty much all the franchise has to offer I can confidently say Rise stays my favourite. Wanna know why? BECAUSE IT'S DIFFERENT! Because the animation and design are absolutely amazing. Because even though they DO fight the shredder and krang its NOT the same ol same ol, you know?? I firmly believe that part of the charm of the TMNT is that they adapt. They adapt to the times and the generations. They are constantly changing. Mutant Mayhem is a pretty conservative take on the turtles and yet nobody can say they aren't doing their own fucking thing.

This is crazy, bro! Hazel is not a female Timmy Turner! She's her own character! They made her different to prove that she doesn't need to be race or gender swapped from a white character! That's just stupid! Also, he is a fake TMNT fan if hates Rise of the TMNT! 'Cause that show slaps, man! How could you NOT like that show if you're a TMNT fan? It still has everything that you could expect from TMNT and still pays homage to previous iterations and incarnations of the franchise! And it hasn't forgotten its hardcore Turtles fanbase, either! Even DuckTales 2017 was a great reboot that didn't try to ruin the source material, but expand upon it like what Rise did! So to say that all reboots suck no matter what is garbage! And it defeats the point of even saying that they do! 'Cause we have gotten good reboots before! And if you haven't seen it, then why even say it and how do your know? It's makes you look dumb if you don't know what you're talking about or you don't be specific when talking about how bad a reboot is and why you don't like the and what specifically you don't like about them! You're just focusing on the bad of reboots without actually talking about the good parts of them! And so your point is just left feeling half-baked and not cohesive enough to even be believable! It's insane, y'all! I genuinely cannot believe or think of what was going on inside this guy's head at all right now! 'Cause he just sounds so ridiculous in this video of his and then he goes to Twitter to have an absolute meltdown over the criticism he's getting for the video and crying about people just being stupid and not knowing what they're talking about, all kinds of bullshit and he's getting ratio'd on almost every single one of his comments that makes while everyone is having a field day roasting him and I'm so here for it! 'Cause if this guy genuinely believed what he was saying about everything was true, he wouldn't have went to Twitter to have a hissy fit copefest about it! This guy has no right to call himself a TMNT fan in my eyes if he doesn't like Rise when he doesn't know what he's talking about if he hasn't seen it, 'cause that's a genuinely good show and I think that everybody should go watch it and give it a chance, even if they're not a TMNT fan, you'll still genuinely enjoy it at least somewhat, 'cause it totally deserves some love, dude! Cowabunga! And we truly SLEPT on that series! Truly the most underrated Turtles series of all time, probably even more so than the 2003 series is and that show is a banger as well!

As a Tmnt fan whose first TMNT series was the 2003 show, I can understand why A.S.K. Air would praise the 2003 series as it was the series that was the closest to the original comics and had great character development. But that doesn't mean he has to shame the other series just because it not just like the 2003 series. Each series has the right to be it's own series and not be completely compared to others.
Do I wish some incarnations of characters were more like the 2003 series? Yes.
Do I appreciate the bold direction they take with said characters? Also yes.
Point is, you should appreciate the various TMNT series for what they're trying do for both old and new fans alike, just because it doesn't aline with what you think is a great TMNT series, it doesn't mean others won't appreciate the series in their own way.
A.S.K. Air is a clear example of someone who praises one incarnation of the franchise above others and not appreciating what the newer series bring to the franchise.
I am a big 2003 TMNT praiser, but even I can see the beauty of the other series, with ROTTMNT being my other favorite TMNT series. Yes they have their flaws, but what series doesn't. You should appreciate each incarnation of the TMNT and what they bring to the franchise.

I agree that a show shouldn't be seen as lesser because it isn't what you grew up with and I think many TMNT fans are able to respect other iterations of the series and I had to learn to love Rise myself but I would say my only criticism is Rise Leo's contradictions as a character; he usually wants people to take him seriously and see his greatness despite not earning it or becoming immature in bad situations which leads to his family and friends treating him that way which leads to him coming off as a unlikable character at times due to his arrogance, immaturity, and lack of accountability which makes him not as interesting as the other versions of Leo who strive to improve themselves on top of there insecurities.
I think at the very least more Leo iterations in the future should have the core element of self improvement along with dealing with trying to be perfect in order to push his character forward.
