I like how Leo isn’t like constantly obsessing over April and can ACTUALLY HOLD A REASONABLE COVERSTAION WITH HER unlike SOMEONE ELSE who had a cannon ship with April (I won’t name names but you know who)
I won’t lie, when the Tales of the TMNT was announced, I was actually pretty curious as to what an animated series would do with the new status quo the movie had set up. The Turtles, previously outcasts, now going to be part of society. How would they cope with being mutants in a human world? How would humans cope with them being mutants in a human world? How would they balance their ninja adventures with regular school, classes and homework? Yeah, this could be interesting! I was kinda psyched to see what the series would do with this... ...annnnd it turns out it didn't do a whole lot with it. You got Bishop and the anti-mutant squad, and some casual human encounters, but really this show doesn't do anything we haven't already seen in previous incarnations. You could have told almost the exact same stories if the Turtles were still outcasts and only known to a few people. Now… there IS a lot to love about this series. The visuals are AWESOME. They took the grungy “street art” look of the CGI movie and translated it to 2D animation, and it looks SO GOOD. The backgrounds are stunning and the character animation, while often choppy, is livelier and more expressive than anything I’ve seen in TNT cartoons before. The action scenes are fast-paced and fluid, and this New York feels LIVED IN. It’s not just a background for the Turtles to run around, it feels like a distinct place with a distinct character. The dialogue is hit-and-miss. There’s some genuinely funny bits here… as well as some absolutely awful “who could possibly think this was remotely funny” bits. The bird poop jokes DEFINITELY got old very quickly. Also, I HATED the Splinter voice thing. Guys, just recast him! We understand that you can't get Jackie Chan to do a series! We'd have been fine with a different voice!
Agree on wishing the show did more with the status quo like what does the city think of them beyond taking selfies or maybe instead of costume party they were going to a gala hosted by the mayor which could have given us more insight to what people thought of the superfly incident or mutants in general. Kitsune also mentioned mutants getting sold on the black market so I wish more was done with that also
@@8ball180Honestly that sort of the problem when you adapt a movie into a tv show while having a sequel in the works at the same time. The series will struggle between telling their own stories without stepping on the toes of whatever idea the sequel movie has planned
Another thing i didn't like about the dialogue is how poorly differentiated the turtles are. Now, obviously, they'll here and there say stuff specific to each turtle, but there is SO MUCH dialogue from them in this series that just kinda feels like anyone could have said the exact same sentence, and if you're lucky they tack on a little joke at the end that reminds you who's talking. Compared to other incarnations where each turtle's voice (in a dialogue sense, not talking about the acting) is VERY strong and unique, these kinda feel extremely samey in their lines.
The show constantly reminding you nothing ever happened was easily the worst part of the show. Just commit to these stories being real, it doesn't matter if the sequels make it not canon. Just do your own thing because it's good enough, don't feel the need to justify its "canon" with those scenes. Especially since none of the stories were written like Leo and Raph wrote them the turtles act 100% in character with zero bias from Leo or Raph, which would have been added if they really told the stories (as shown in the Turtle Rashomon sequences of episodes 1-6) so it doesn't even take that into consideration. Remove that and the show is way better.
I normally have Mikey as my fav or second fav for each iteration, but I do agree with you that his personality in Tales is kinda foggy. Raph is my fav of this iteration because I like how they've written him and ESPECIALLY "Raph vs water" ep resonated with me. I read his "tantrum" as overstimulation (He's stuck at home with a whole bunch of loud people with no possible outlet for his emotions and you can see him getting frustrated at every minor inconvenience...)
i rly resonate w ur struggles w the canonicity issue, its rly hard for me to just seperate this as a fun adventure when everything they did was so much fun and adds so much to the universe (except brady noon splinter i still cant get over that)
Finally someone is addressing the fact that none of these events actually happened, and that is exactly what is keeping me to enjoy the show at its fullest, it’s very unsatisfying that all these amazing characters were wasted
I was first thinking this was a sort of way to give the mutants that had 3-4 minutes in the movie more screen time in this series because mostly Rocksteady, Bebop, and Mondo Gecko got more screentime and attention given
@@VintheBandit Whoa then maybe don't cast high cost celebrities in your movie so this wouldn't be issue. Is Splinter even in this? Also they could just cast other voice actors is that simple
I am still hoping for a renewal for Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. It was supposed to have 3 seasons but they cut that so short. It has to be my most favorite iterations of them all.
@@misabelrodriguez1163 That's the thing! I hate Nickelodeon for screwing around with the promotions for the show! They had great toys, funkos for Tales. The Rise show, from what I heard, had a messy schedule since they always aired the show during night time. They really fumbled with Rise. Thanks to the movie, the iteration has gain and continues gaining more well deserved love! We should keep continue supporting the show so it'll be brought back to us for more! #saverottmnt
Mikey in tales is reminding me of early IDW Mikey (with hints of an inferiority complex similar to rise Leo) so I actually think he has potential but they just haven’t fully taped into yet so I have high hopes but he’ll still probably won’t be treated worse by the story than 2012 Mikey. Also I think IDW Mikey kind of has bits of all of the different Mikeys (even though it came out before 2012 and rise) like he loves parties(like 87), he’s a slightly annoying jokester who wants to be a super hero(like 03), he’s a lovable “idiot” who’s very trusting and kind (like 2012), he’s the most emotional intelligent and open out his bothers as well as being super optimistic (like rise) and then he has a couple (somewhat) unique traits like him disliking violence, his being the most opposed to being in the foot clan once splinter is leading it, him being able to speak up for himself and some other things I forgot just know oof (if you couldn’t tell IDW Mikey is my favorite Mikey and my favorite IDW turtle)
I think I'd say IDW Mikey has a much stronger personality from the get-go than Tales Mikey. (IDW Mikey is my fave Mikey too!) If anything, Tales Mikey reminded me a lot more of Mikey from the original Mirage comics, who was the least explored and least focused-on Turtle, who like 80% of the time was just there as a generic fourth Turtle with no real personality... and the times he did get some focus and personality it was super-inconsistent.
I do wonder why James Sie couldn't voice Splinter in the show. I mean, he's been Jackie Chan's voice double before, like in Jackie Chan Adventures and most of the non-movie projects from Kung Fu Panda. As for the continuity thing, it reminds me of how shows produced by Disney Television Animation and Dreamworks Animation Television can build off of the movies, but vice versa isn't true given how the movies are more known among the general public.
Loved everything about this show. Visually, every element is absolutely amazing and I’m so glad that the franchise continues to leap to the stylistic heights of mutant mayhem and rise of the tmnt. The voice acting as well as dialogue was superb. The story, albeit simple, really understood how to keep the viewer engaged from a structural perspective and honestly delivered a lot of earnest heartwarming moments. As a brief aside, for a longtime tmnt fan seeing characters like Hun, kitsune, and Angel was great.
Ngl the Mickey of this universe is really good when he is paired up with other people like Rod and Lee. I also really enjoyed the sibling like relationship between Donnie and Wingnutt, it really made me realise that she was one of the MM with the most lines
The arcs they had were fine, and I loved East River Three especially Goldin's final fight, because man I underestimated the animation level, because the first ever teaser had some choppy animation, but this is almost bordering Rise level animation when Goldfin was fighting with that chain. Since 2018 we've been getting spoiled with grade A animation, we've been eating. The arcs are fine but I feel like 2012 wrote them a lot better, episodes like Metalhead or Turtle Temper almost felt like character studies they added so much depth to each of them.
I enjoyed the show overall but I pretty much agree with all your takes on it. Another criticism I have for it (that's kinda nitpicky) is the pop culture/celebrity name-drops. Felt like they upped them from Mutant Mayhem and they felt kinda forced in the dialogue sometimes.
Honestly I thought they did it less than in Mutant Mayhem haha, but yeah just like the film there were a few moments that felt very jarring (it’s usually when Mikey says them tbh lol)
When I came around to watch this show, I watched it first having not had watched Mutant Mayhem, now that I’ve seen both the film and show, the show kinda bothers me in terms of how canon this show is to this iteration because these are simply stories that Leo and Ralph have made up, but the thing is these arcs continue to set up the world building but if this show gets a second season, I wonder how they’ll handle it. Otherwise I still enjoy this show for what it has to offer! Nice review :)
One thing I found interesting about splinters voice actor in the show, James Sie voice acted in Lego monkey kid, which is animated by the same company as rottmnt. That detail makes me appreciate the show more :)
Oh I didn’t realize Splinter had a separate VA! I kinda was just like “yeah that sounds like Brady Noon” lol - honestly makes the fact that they went for the whole Batman voice things even more frustrating to be honest, if they’re going to recast I think they should at least attempt a similar voice yknow
They don't work on Lego Monkie Kid anymore, which is very dissapointing. Instead it was handed over to some crappy puppet animation studio which did not do the amazing writing of the 5th season any justice.
I honestly was kinda disappointed with this series. I feel like it was underwhelming and I wasn’t really a fan of the first episode which is very shocking to me since I’m usually very easily pleased but after your video I think I like it a lot more. I guess it was just the way you explained it made me think about the series in a different light. It’s definitely not as good as 2012 and rise or even 2003 but it’s still a solid show.
I just hate April getting shipped with the turtles in general. Not only does she always feel so sibling coded to me, why do they keep having to do "OKAY. WE HAVE GIRL. SINGLE GIRL. NOW GET HER INTO RELATIONSHIP. WHY ELSE MAKE GIRL CHARACTER" like. She's the only main girl character and they're already trying to get her into a relationship😭😭 Not everything needs to be romantic.
17:58 When it comes to the Mutant Mayhem movie & the hypothetical Tangled example, I'll say that having to watch a movie as a prerequisite to a series is a lot easier to do since movies last around 1 and half hours to 2 hours, whereas watching an entire series as a prerequisite in order to watch a movie is a HUGE time commitment. Even if Tales can't do a story with long term implications, which is pretty sad, I'll still enjoy it as it's own separate thing. Also I hope we get to see them in the school setting at some point!
Another thing that I believe is detrimental to Tales is, it's timing of coming out. The entire season dropped only a year after the movie. And the movie dropped shortly after ROTTMNT's movie. Where fans were still trying to campaign for it's main animated series to get greenlit again for a season 3. Or another movie. I was an avid watcher and fan of 2012, and felt it's story came to a conclusion when it was fully completed. Despite it ending in 2017 with ROTTMNT airing in 2018. Both shows were drastically different from each other in both how it presented the characters and the stories they told. But ROTTMNT and Tales feel too similar to me in how it portrays the characters and it's story narratives. Legit, Tales feels like ROTTMNT but younger to me instead of a completely different iteration. And honestly, despite the hard work and effort the shows team put into it, even when it's movie was in theaters and the series was announced. Again, fans were still campaigning for Rise to come back. Even in modern day THEY STILL ARE As good as Tales is I definitely think it is dead in the water and will unfortunately not be remembered very well
@@contra7631are you serious right now? 2012 TMNT had its time to shine. Rise of TMNT was cut short and deserves a return, the series was good, underrated and the movie showed great potential for its future
100% agree. They aren’t clever references like in 2012 TMNT. They’re just saying things for the sake of saying things. This is part of the reason why episode 10 is so hard to watch for me
@@8ball180 I thought the one piece reference was the only funny one- that and Donnie getting Wingnut to calm down with referencing Star wars, cause at least that tied back his whole speech about how they'll always find a way to solve things and get through their problems.
I REALLY enjoyed this video and hearing your input on the show! I sadly didn't have as much of a good time with this show as I wanted to despite me LOVING Mutant Mayhem last year. Some of the points you made really helped me see a different persepective on how this show might be landing with people though! I am not fully sure of your feelings on the idea of collaborations on Turtles content, but I'd love to have a discussion with you on this or even speaking on the future of this iteration if you're ever up for it in a later video. I love speaking to the community about all the new stuff rolling out. Keep up the great work and looking forward to your next upload!
4:48 idk I was into him being the modern and more realistic nerd. Chronically online, into anime and stuff, applies fiction to rl in a way that actually helps, voice tells me his balls will never drop. All that. Cuz lots of nerds (which are kinda just more common now) are kinda dumb or aren’t into coding
His voice in the later episodes started to drop a bit I noticed. But ditto I kinda liked that Donnie was a little more realistic as a nerd, it ties into his insecurity of him believing his brothers think he's inadequate, makes sense too with them being younger teens here. I appreciate that they at least make him adapatable and good at problem solving, that does show a high level of intelligence out of Donnie
To make a comment on the show: I think trying to turn a Mutant Mayhem TV show into a serialized action show was a mistake. I know they're the TMNT, there's going to be action and there should be, but this definitely should've been an episodic show that focused on their lives. There could've still been room for action with them getting into trouble with the Purple Dragons, other mutants, even just doing things the way they usually do them (like "shopping" in the movie) but trying to do an overarching action story with a) a movie spin-off show that's in-between movies, and b) very specifically this version of the TMNT, feels like it's perhaps not the best idea? These boys lend themselves the best to relationship dynamics and interpersonal problems, imo. What convinced me (a minor TMNT fan) to watch the movie was the teaser trailer, which started with goofing off and cutting up watermelon-because that's what made the movie _work._ One of the best jokes in the movie is when they just keep going on and on with this bit that isn't even funny, "Bacon Egg and Cheese with the bev", and April goes "Yeah, I don't think this is gonna help people like you." And they pause and then KEEP GOING. And it's funny because it's so REAL. The writers of the movie perfectly captured the humor style and the awkwardness of real teenagers ("Leo Nardo" made me cringe because I could literally see it happening), and it's why the movie is such a fun watch. Cartoons have decided to do that more often these days-I think Spider-Verse kicked this off-but the Mutant Mayhem writers did it EXCEPTIONALLY WELL. And I think an entire show of that would've been the best move. Give me realness with these characters that are made perfectly for it! There's plenty of action to be had, but also don't shy away from what that movie was really about! Where's the episode about Splinter being sad because his Ninja Turtles are going to school now?!
This felt like a show that I should have liked but didn't. Like something about the voice acting was really grating and the plot lines felt dull and either bored or annoyed the shit out if me. Mickey making unfunny jokes about Lee's name in the most grating voice ever is what killed it for me. Like haha her name is Eel but backwards it's not that funny and then she just started screaming about her evil plan for no reason. It's painful to watch
The idea of the series not being real was frustrating to me. I adore what they did with new Bishop, the Dragons, and the East River Three. I also loved the little insights into the Mutanimals when we got them. I want them to exist! Someone else commented that they were hoping to get insights on what the Turtles' lives are like now that they're integrated into human society and were disappointed that it never happened. I share the sentiment. I would have loved to see them going to school and dealing with teachers and trying to fit in and all of that. Why can't high school be seen as an adventure by the turtles? They have a brand new world to explore, and we don't get to see them partake in any of it. Are there people that are still afraid of the Turtles because they're different? Are there people who want to exploit there celebrity? Are there kids in their year that have crushes on them? Such a wasted opportunity. I suppose AO3 will have to fill in the gaps.
I thought maybe i was being mean about Mikey's voice performance. Hearing one else say it is validating. I loved Donnie's high voice next to Mikey's deep voice but the lack of energy makes it's a little jarring.
Before sharing thoughts on the series I wanted to give my two cents about Bishop: Now, I understand 2003 Bishop is cool because of how ruthless yet sarcastic he can be during the fights, but I wouldn't call him entirely evil and it's sad you ignored his arc in Fast Forward. To me, 2003 Bishop is a man who lost his way after realizing he's superior than every human on Earth and as Splinter mentioned he decided to play God. Despite his ego he never was after fame or power, he just was doing his job the way he considered best. And Fast Forward makes it clear that he's a man with noble intentions, he realized his mistake and tried everything to redeem himself. And Baxter Stockman was the living example of his mistakes. I just love how he rushed to save him despite all the torture. In a way, I feel like Stockman became Bishop's closest and best friend for the first time in his life. And I guess you can say Bishop kinda adopted Cody in the last episode?! It just felt like John became his guardian after Darius revealed his hatred for Cody. Now, I understand 2012 Bishop is the most bland one, but still I liked the twist joke of him being an actual alien. His rivarly with Kraang Subprime was cool and he also had some hilarious moments with roasting Fugitoid's new body or hesitating to give high three. 2012 show kinda gave me an idea of potential Raph/Bishop bickering that can be used in future incarnations. Still, while not my favorite Tales Bishop was also quite an interesting take. It may be just me, but I felt like her mechanic arm was kinda a reference to disabled IDW Bishop who had to be basically an Utrom in a body of an adult. Too bad we didn't actually get to see Bishop's relative like in IDW with his crazy father. P.S You know, with all that debates about modern TMNT being woke and fights about black April it feels like Bishop is the perfect character for disability representation. Think about it, it's the second version now where that character has a body anomaly yet he/she prevails and becomes the leader for his/her skills. I think it would've been cool to see once weak person everyone would consider a garbage become one of the strongest, smartest and most efficient characters in TMNT.
Very well said! I did enjoy 2003 Bishop’s story during Fast Forward, but it’s something we don’t see built up during the main series and is completely isolated to that season (which isn’t a bad thing, I mean a lot can change in 100 years so good for him haha). During the main 2003 story, he’s just a villain with a deep hatred and goal that makes him a bit sadistic which is the main appeal for him as an antagonist for me :P
@torisaursky Regardless, it's nice we can agree that Bishop is very interesting nuanced fella and one of the best additions to TMNT universe. It makes me sad some 87 show or even Mirage comics fans still don't want to learn about anything past this show and leave many characters including Bishop behind.
When I was watching tottmnt, I knew it wasn’t gonna be as good as tmnt2003 or 2012 but just hoped it could entertain me (which I’m glad it did). I hope by s2 or the second movie we get a DEEP look into their character :)
9:25 They do mean it in the found family sense! The thing that makes them cousins isn't genetics or marriage, it's circumstance. They were made out of the same Ooze, so they're "cousins"; any mutant would be referred to as a cousin, it isn't specific to the Mutanimals. To give a real world example, black people refer to eachother as "brothers" and "sisters" because of our shared common experience and origin! So they're "cousins" in the same way we're "sisters".
Bishop is a wannabe Bolivar Trask. In case you don’t know, Bolivar Trask is from the X-Men and is the creator of the sentinels, giant robots designed to hunt and capture mutants.
The best substitute for Jackie Chan as Splinter would have been the actor James Sie. Sie played Jackie Chan in Jackie Chan Adventures. Sie also starred in the various Kung Fu Panda shows and video games as Monkey (voiced by Chan on the big screen) He also has a long voice acting career in cartoons and video games. He's also worked on Nickelodeon shows including the Avatar as the Cabbage Merchant (legend), Kwan on Danny Phantom and the first Kung Fu Panda show. He is the best option for a canon Splinter voice
I liked Mutant Mayhem. Of course, I wish someone would make a raw, all red, OG TMNT, not directed at children, where "Mikey" isn't some dufus. But there wasn't anything wrong with MM.
I usually love the characters voices, in Tales I just didn't. I only really liked Leos voice, Mikeys voice is my least favourite and it just really lacks a lot. Mikey is also usually my favourite but he's just so boring in Tales
I gave it a chance, but somehow I'm just not engaged. 2012? Got me hooked. Rise? Love it forever. Tales? It's like a meh, for me. There are some funny moments but it's mostly dry for me. I won't hate it though, the only problem is it's just dry and kinda lame. Edit: One of the things I can give Tales credit is that they write Leo's crush on April a very cute one (even when I got bummed when they made another turtle love April cz remember 2012?) But at least it's not written to be totally annoying like 2012 Donnie. Another thing is the animation is really smooth (there's this one Mikey scene in his episode that made me light up so bad 😂) But yeah, still trying to give it a chance (I'm still not feeling it tho, sorry)
I knew Rob reminded me of someone! Overall, I really liked this series. It’s no 2012 or Rise, but it was very enjoyable and the animation is gorgeous. Also, I freaking love Pigeon Pete. I did not think I’d like this version. Same with Bishop. She was a very cool interpretation and I really liked her backstory. I do agree that Splinter should be recasted, but it didn’t bother me as much.
I eill be honest I was quite sceptical of this as the artstyle isn't one that I myself prefer buy as I watched I slowly started to like it more and more And how the first episodes are played out indeed feels like a fanfiction that a teen has wrote or a comic. And as I myself around this age was doing such turtle comics it gave me this nice familiar feeling so I really like this episode so far. It's easy, nice ,something fresh and funny. It's his own thing and I genuinely enjoy it
i know that rottmnt has failed and treated like another stupid reboot like the cartoon network ones but this series can get better and more seasons i hope
I'm from Uruguay, and here the season was 6 episode long, I don't know why, but I'm pretty angry at paramount plus because of this. I literally only watched the mechazoid's storyline and didn't even know that there was more until I looked up for some reviews.
The sea enemies and ray filet were hilarious. I already commented, but maybe it was removed. Context wise its brilliant because just like the sea, enemies teens tend to immitate and refference the media while trying to figure out who they are in society. No one is free from media. We all need internet. Also, while everybody is freaking out, Ray Filet is vibing. To me, contrast is hilarious, especially if it fits the context. It's about a mutant family trying to live and survive. But i respect your opinion
Them constantly reiterating that they didn’t actually do anything interesting since the attack on the city literally made me want to drop the show If none of this actually is happening, then why would I care enough to continue? Who cares if the next movies retcon it. Having a secondary universe as a show is better than having a canon show that has no stakes
Aw, that's sad if goldfin never was real. I didn't like how Mickey made fun of her name, when he comes of as beaing understanding towards Pete. It feelt forced somehow. I enjoyed the show overall, and looked forward to see what each turtle was doing on their own. The Leo -April ship....I don't care for. But it's not obnoxius either.
The reason ray fillet doesn’t say much is because they dint wanna hire post Malone (and Jackie Chan and John Cena and Seth Rogan for that matter) to come back and reprise there roles from the movie, which is why celebrity voice acting dosent work semtimes
I’m a big fan of the ninja turtles franchise and it was cool seeing a movie franchise getting a television series. The animation style for the 3rd Nickelodeon ninja turtles show is really good and I like it better than the 2012 show but the episodes are really long with a lot of characters doing their own adventures but I honestly don’t mind this show and I’m curious to see what season 2 has in store.
Honestly, the network isn't going to let the show bring in its own big story unless its still up and running when they get however many movies they wanna make. If its still running by then? I genuinely think if this continues after the movies then they could do something big with everything they have available. Personally looking forward to the implications of a single dad seahorse with hundreds of children to take care of. That would be insane to see.
15:21 i love pete to i wish he was in the movie i can see him replaced with wing nut like fin harris with ray felly fin harris is a Dolphine from mutants unleashed
I do have a video series that I’m planning to start somewhat soon that’s going to cover all sorts of animated shows so there’s a good chance I’ll get to Tangled at some point!
I literally just finished the show a few hours ago I had a pretty fun time with it the Animation was a great translation from the movie, the action scenes were fluid and fast paced I definitely enjoyed the Mechazoid arc slightly more than the pearl arc but I still had a fun time with both my only BIG problem with the show is that none of it happened and it’s all just storys made up by Leo and Raph how which doesn’t really make sense since these story are pretty small scale besides New York getting flooded but that actually happened so I don’t understand why they did this also how did Leo and Raph portray everyone exactly one to one also these just being made up Story’s could mean that Bishop and the purple Dragons don’t even exist in this universe I feel like this one decision brings down the whole show EDIT:btw I find kinda ironic that your video turned out to be the exact length of episode 2 it’s like this was some secret 13th episode btw I’m new to your channel loved the vid I’m definitely sticking around here
Such a shame they were worried about canonicity and Jackie Chan's voice, the writting is really strong and cohesive with the movie, the new character designs on point. I'm really mad none of this is canon, otherwise it was one of the most consistant effort in TMNT TV imo, that final fight was so clean.
they explained that theyre technically cousins because baxter's ooze is what mutated. then the turtle & splinter adoption the mutant animal i mean they live with them after all and I'm ignoring splinter x scum bug thing there just bff to me
I also didn't get the 'Mikey vibe' from this version of Mikey, which was really disappointing as Mikey is my favourite character. Now I will say, that the fight scenes were amazing! I thought they were fantastic, however, for that they were kinda the only thing i enjoyed. To be fair i came into tales after not really enjoying the movie, but hoped that tales would engage me more, however I just didn't connect with this version, which has rather bummed me out, as i really wanted to enjoy the newest TMNT revamp. I did not enjoy Scumbug AT ALL, or wing nut, and the 1000 references that I didn't care about, it just made enjoying the episodes really hard. And the whole 'vermin speak' thing....clever way of working around the JC voice issue, but guys, just replace him, there are plenty of good VAs out there who could have nailed a Splinter voice, and it felt unnecessary. Also, the bird poop stuff with PP? Ew, just...No guys, no. Pulling fart and poop gags is something that was meant to have died a LONG time ago for a solid reason. I'm going to give the next season a chance to win me over, but for now i'm afraid that Tales doesn't have my vote.
Tales is very hit-or-miss for me. When it’s good it’s really good, but when it’s bad it’s almost unbearable to watch for me. Starting with the characters, I personally don’t like this version of April. I think she’s really annoying and doesn’t really add much to the series overall. Leo from Mutant Mayhem is my least favorite iteration of the character. He’s lame and dorky which is fine, but him having a thing for April is just unnecessary and really bogs down the character. I’m glad he isn’t simping for her the whole time like in the movie. For some reason they lobotomized Ray Fillet in between the show and the movie so he can only say like 3 phrases, and the whole Splinter voice thing is incredibly distracting. The rest of the characters are either I like or a just whatever. My main problems with the show is the dialogue and the episode length. The constant references to pop culture were unbearable to sit through. It’s not like in 2012 where there was at least some effort to incorporate the reference either visually or in dialogue without it being distracting. They just mention shows or movies for the sake of referencing them. It just feels like “Hey we know this thing”. As for the episode length, some episodes really drag on, like the writers were just artificially stretching the story to fit the runtime. This is especially prevalent in the second half of the season. So often will two characters be fighting and just randomly stop for no reason. Like it episode 8, Lee will just stop fighting and dive back into the water for seemingly no reason. Characters will also just stand around sometimes and will often retread information already seen in the episode. This is why episode 10 is so hard to watch for me. The constant references and the fact that Donnie and Wingnut ultimately achieve nothing and don’t progress the narrative in a meaningful way makes it a drag to watch. It’s hard to describe exactly what I mean, but if you go back and watch you really feel the moments when they’re wasting time to reach the 22 minute runtime. The show really could have benefitted from a shorter episode length. It should have been like Rottmnt where important episodes are 22 minutes while the rest of the episodes are 11 minutes. There are some things I liked about it. I like the style, the animation is great and sometimes downright breathtaking, and I liked a majority of the characters. For the type of character Rod was, he could have been really annoying so I’m they didn’t go that route, while I think Bishop’s backstory is kind of weak(it really just seems like she’s mad they broke her toy) she was a good villain, and the East River Three were great overall. I was willing to give this a shot even though I didn’t really like Mutant Mayhem that much(it really fell apart in the third act for me) and they did improve some of the problems I had with the movie. Overall I think it’s worth a watch, but it doesn’t really hold a candle to the other series. It’s pitfalls are just too much for me to overlook
Is Bishop an actual character from the other incarnations I thought of with a brand new villain or something all I know is the smart naughty human genius is backter Stockman
Yes, Bishop was originally from the 2003 animated series and was adapted into the IDW comic continuity and the 2012 show. The EPF and a Bishop-looking dude also have a brief cameo at the end of the Rise movie, but he has not been confirmed as Bishop necessarily
The thing I like about the tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is that we get to explore the turtles not as just a team but individuals we got to get more depth into their characters that’s why I like the show. It wasn’t as good as the 2012 ninja turtle series 2012 series will always be my Favorite one, but this show was OK. Not the best nor the words it was just OK.
This series is uneventful. No action until halfway through. The dialogue isn’t funny and it’s slow paced. They could’ve done better. The individual storylines made fall asleep.
1:34 first she's not hat funny & second she would have said lets just hop it doesn't fall on a truck of sand ha ha get it. my version of April is a fighter.
Lower on the list since it’s a fun little theme but isn’t an absolute banger like the others. I’d put it at #7 above the Red Sky ‘87 theme and below 2012 :P
I think the show is kinda decent. It has callbacks to several characters from other iterations which was pretty cool (lookin' at you Pigeon Pete, Mutagen Man and of course Metalhead). The animation style while not stellar, is unique in it's own vibe and the voices for the boys are done well. I also thought it was clever how they handled Splinter's lack of voice since obviously Jackie couldn't be there....but what kills it for me are all those damned modern cultural references!! I get it, this is a 2024 baby, I dont need to be slapped over the head every second with them knowing who Beyonce, or BTS is (and as a proud Army, that's saying something). Overall, I do think they should give this series a chance on tv and maybe two or three more well paced seasons. It's not that bad. Later edit: what the heck happended to my man Bishop?! When can we actuall get a badass version of one of the coolest villains in TMNT and it be a man like in 2003?!
I think I get it cause when the turtles got mutated they were just babies, but I assume that when the other mutants when they were first mutated, they have already aged a couple of years hence the fact that they are older than the turtles
My personal explanation is that because flies and cockroaches have TINY lifespans, even with their mutation expanding their lifespans they age faster than the turtles. So even if they were the same “age”, Superfly and Scumbug would be adults
9:22 i think the mutantanimals ageing is a bit different from the turtles & splinter my verion of scum bug & splinter there just bucmff best uncle cousin mutant friend forever.
Its a fun series i enjoyed the jokes and certain tmnt characters from comics media like angel etc being in the show. The action has that rise of the tmnt/anime esque stuff especially the final episode against goldfinn. In comparison My Favorite still 2k3 version but i enjoyed the expansion

THAT'S HOW I FELT I WAS SO DISAPPOINTED
This show is jus setting up the 2nd movie, that's probably why
Did I miss something? I thought that the stories the Turtles were telling in the show were based on things that happened to them previously?
Right!!!! Any time there was a cool moment or character arc I was like “oh yeah this is all fake”, I thought I was the only one with this issue lol
@@arnoldschwarzenegger3755in the recap for episode 2 I believe Leo says something like “this is a cool adventure we didn’t go on” 😂
I normally have Mikey as my fav or second fav for each iteration, but I do agree with you that his personality in Tales is kinda foggy.
Mikey's character is usualy thrown under the rug as just a joker youngest sibling
i rly resonate w ur struggles w the canonicity issue, its rly hard for me to just seperate this as a fun adventure when everything they did was so much fun and adds so much to the universe (except brady noon splinter i still cant get over that)
The confusing part is that the first 6 episodes are implied to be made up while the last 6 are implied to be real
I just assumed that it happened (although I was a little confused)
@@popsquirt9370 thing is in episode 2, Leo’s like “yeah I made it all up”
Finally someone is addressing the fact that none of these events actually happened, and that is exactly what is keeping me to enjoy the show at its fullest, it’s very unsatisfying that all these amazing characters were wasted
Also the fact that Mondo gheko (the coolest characters from MM) wasn't in the show is disappointing
Yeah he’s so fun and honestly him playing off of Mikey could be a good avenue to mend the issues I have with Mikey’s characterization
That was literally the only reason why I was willing to watch this show. Now I no longer care
@@KgEclispe252I mean there were huge ass names in the movie, to have even just one as an reoccurring character would cost them hella cash

Mikey is also my favorite from IDW! (behind Jennika, I love her dearly)
9:29 This reminds me of the next mutation when the turtles weren't brothers, so Venus could be a romantic interest
I blame 2012, before that April and the turtles' relationship was always familial.

TMNT: Mutant Mayhem Is Getting a Sequel
Even in modern day THEY STILL ARE
As good as Tales is I definitely think it is dead in the water and will unfortunately not be remembered very well

They use it too much.
Agreed, though the one piece one was funny

Technically speaking, those aren't nerds
Those are geeks
There is some overlap, but not enough to classify MM!Donnie as a nerd
Before sharing thoughts on the series I wanted to give my two cents about Bishop:
Now, I understand 2003 Bishop is cool because of how ruthless yet sarcastic he can be during the fights, but I wouldn't call him entirely evil and it's sad you ignored his arc in Fast Forward.
Honestly this is probably the best explanation I’ve seen, I appreciate it!
@torisaursky Ofc!
i thought it was because they were made by Backster mutagen & adoption
Bishop is a wannabe Bolivar Trask. In case you don’t know, Bolivar Trask is from the X-Men and is the creator of the sentinels, giant robots designed to hunt and capture mutants.
One thing ill say is the turtles havent looked this good in years
The best substitute for Jackie Chan as Splinter would have been the actor James Sie.
Sie played Jackie Chan in Jackie Chan Adventures. Sie also starred in the various Kung Fu Panda shows and video games as Monkey (voiced by Chan on the big screen)
He also has a long voice acting career in cartoons and video games.
He's also worked on Nickelodeon shows including the Avatar as the Cabbage Merchant (legend), Kwan on Danny Phantom and the first Kung Fu Panda show.
He is the best option for a canon Splinter voice

Edit: One of the things I can give Tales credit is that they write Leo's crush on April a very cute one (even when I got bummed when they made another turtle love April cz remember 2012?) But at least it's not written to be totally annoying like 2012 Donnie.
Another thing is the animation is really smooth (there's this one Mikey scene in his episode that made me light up so bad 😂)
But yeah, still trying to give it a chance (I'm still not feeling it tho, sorry)

I loved this show so much, I choose to believe that most of the things we saw are canon, specially the first arc
Them constantly reiterating that they didn’t actually do anything interesting since the attack on the city literally made me want to drop the show
If none of this actually is happening, then why would I care enough to continue? Who cares if the next movies retcon it. Having a secondary universe as a show is better than having a canon show that has no stakes
mutants unleashed & tales are canon to me & my version of those will be a bit different
Really want to know about your TMNT story, if you don't mind sharing.

Don't forget this series is setting up the 2nd movie, so it's a Lil light. I also think bad Bernie will become rat king 😂
Anyway- RISE IS BETTER GO WATCH THAT INSTEAD WHOOOO WHAT THE HELL IS A THIRD SEASON!? 🗣️🗣️❗️❗️❗️
I think for now my fav scene is when Leo says that his Batman 😭🙏
Fr fr 😂😭
Aw, that's sad if goldfin never was real.
I didn't like how Mickey made fun of her name, when he comes of as beaing understanding towards Pete.
It feelt forced somehow.
I enjoyed the show overall, and looked forward to see what each turtle was doing on their own. The Leo -April ship....I don't care for. But it's not obnoxius either.
@@timeeater2007 not him apologizing and then making fun of her name again. Mikey didn't deserve the hug in the end
Welcome back to longform content. tori havent finished yet, but I know itll be great
The animation style is beautiful
Y’know for Splinter they could’ve got James Sie who voiced Jackie Chan in Jackie Chan Adventures and Monkey from the first Kung Fu Panda series
The reason ray fillet doesn’t say much is because they dint wanna hire post Malone (and Jackie Chan and John Cena and Seth Rogan for that matter) to come back and reprise there roles from the movie, which is why celebrity voice acting dosent work semtimes
literally uploaded 4 minutes ago the earliest i've ever been to a video no way
I’m a big fan of the ninja turtles franchise and it was cool seeing a movie franchise getting a television series.
3:50 you forgot about the 2003 angle
Thank you so much for mentioning TTS! I love that show, and can you please do some reviews for it please?
I do have a video series that I’m planning to start somewhat soon that’s going to cover all sorts of animated shows so there’s a good chance I’ll get to Tangled at some point!
@@torisaursky That would be great, I would do that if I were you because I like to branch out my content too when I make edits.
Babe wake up tori uploaded
I'm awake.
I feel like you just read my mind and vocalized everything I thought
I literally just finished the show a few hours ago I had a pretty fun time with it the Animation was a great translation from the movie, the action scenes were fluid and fast paced I definitely enjoyed the Mechazoid arc slightly more than the pearl arc but I still had a fun time with both my only BIG problem with the show is that none of it happened and it’s all just storys made up by Leo and Raph how which doesn’t really make sense since these story are pretty small scale besides New York getting flooded but that actually happened so I don’t understand why they did this also how did Leo and Raph portray everyone exactly one to one also these just being made up Story’s could mean that Bishop and the purple Dragons don’t even exist in this universe I feel like this one decision brings down the whole show
EDIT:btw I find kinda ironic that your video turned out to be the exact length of episode 2 it’s like this was some secret 13th episode btw I’m new to your channel loved the vid I’m definitely sticking around here
I also agree the show can evolve a lot into something bigger but one I thing I hope for is another crossover with one of the other iterations
Such a shame they were worried about canonicity and Jackie Chan's voice, the writting is really strong and cohesive with the movie, the new character designs on point. I'm really mad none of this is canon, otherwise it was one of the most consistant effort in TMNT TV imo, that final fight was so clean.
I actually enjoyed it but I respect ur opinion 😊
I did too! I just think it’s in an unfortunate position that limits it more than the other TMNT shows
@@torisaursky the only issue I have with this show is that mondo bebop and rocksteady aren’t In it
I think Wingnut is way more adorable in the this series.
Maybe Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will have a 2nd Season.
in episode 9 splinter said to goldfin your like a wear second cousins once remover dose that mean pete is a cousins or son of Mikey ?
I hope the next season ditches the formula and gives us more stories
What formula?
@@anonymousanon1129probably the fake story premise probably
I gave it 9.5 loved it! What they did the splinter kept it from being perfect.
they explained that theyre technically cousins because baxter's ooze is what mutated.
then the turtle & splinter adoption the mutant animal i mean they live with them after all and I'm ignoring splinter x scum bug thing there just bff to me
I also didn't get the 'Mikey vibe' from this version of Mikey, which was really disappointing as Mikey is my favourite character.
I disagree with most of this, but you do make some good points here and there :P
@@torisaursky I would like to know what you disagree with exactly. Maybe there’s something I’m misunderstanding about the show that you can clarify on
where did you watch the other 6 episodes ? I can't find them anywhere 😭
All 12 of them should be on Paramount+
@@torisaursky I only see 6 available, maybe it's because of the location? idk 😭
16:46 can you balm them there the best no matter with versions there facing with like the old saying if you can do it i can do it
The thing I like about the tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is that we get to explore the turtles not as just a team but individuals we got to get more depth into their characters that’s why I like the show.
2012 tmnt did it best for me.
it was aweso,e. 2003 and 2012 are by far the best iterations
All of this was to set up metal head and I'm here for it. Mikey is chaotic so I get why he would jab the needle.
1:34 first she's not hat funny & second she would have said lets just hop it doesn't fall on a truck of sand ha ha get it.
my version of April is a fighter.
I think the show will be canon and they will continue these stories. I think it would be such a waste if they werent
13:46 eric Bouza yes or someone how can bck a Jackie chin impression
2:37 ooh if only he now about mutagen man 2012 & thank goodness for him
Where on your ranking of the TMNT theme songs would you put tottmnt
Lower on the list since it’s a fun little theme but isn’t an absolute banger like the others. I’d put it at #7 above the Red Sky ‘87 theme and below 2012 :P
they explained that theyre technically cousins because baxter's ooze is what mutated them
the turtle & splinter adoption the mutant animal i mean they live with them after all and I'm ignoring splinter x scum bug thing there just bff to me
I think the show is kinda decent.
What if the series used the same animation as mutant mayhem?
12:40 the Gini pig & gold fish is not that good.
9:22 i think the mutantanimals ageing is a bit different from the turtles & splinter
my verion of scum bug & splinter there just bucmff best uncle cousin mutant friend forever.
Its a fun series i enjoyed the jokes and certain tmnt characters from comics media like angel etc being in the show. The action has that rise of the tmnt/anime esque stuff especially the final episode against goldfinn. In comparison My Favorite still 2k3 version but i enjoyed the expansion
