Pugay Maesteo Albano, glad to see you not only teaching the art, but the history and culture behind it. Glad we’re seeing this more from our Bay Side brothers.

Teaching the culture and traditions is something that is missing now in FMA, especially in the western world. We're glad that the current generation is seeing value in promoting the culture and just the art/fighting form.

Thanks Maestro Alvin for all of this information. I can see a lot of similarities throughout Derobio lineage and from GM Dan Medina’s videos. Keep on spreading FMA Hawaiian lineage.

The FMA lineage in Hawaii ishould also be documented and highlighted. Hopefully we'll make our way there in the future.

@@FMAPulse that would be an awesome trip. I happened upon a Derobio Eskrima Tournament in Waipahu 2006. It was great.

@@dasfreshyo Awesome, do you know if it's an annual event?

@@FMAPulse i haven't heard of any events since then. Derobio is a big group there I think. They would know more than me. If they do have another one, I'd go!

Silly story, way back when I was actively training with sticks, I would always go for the fingers holding the weapon, not the wrist or forearm. I figured, where I am from, it would be illegal to use a blade in self defense so I would train with sticks to try to "break" fingers. Non-lethal but really, really preventative for follow-ups from any opponents. To this day, I don't know whether I was wrong or right.

Thanks for that insight. It all depends on the context of what you're doing at that moment. There's the saying, "blade seeks flesh, stick seeks bone." In any country, depending on the rules and laws, you train what law allows you to do. In any 3rd world country, they're not thinking about the laws if a fight breaks out. They just react and sometimes the outcome is really extreme. Depending on what you have on you, the object is to survive by any means necessary. It's all on the mindset of the individual at that moment and time. If you can't de-escalate a situation, and the situation goes from 0-100 in a second, it's difficult to think what you can and cannot do at that moment, especially when weapons are involved.

I would never snake a blade. The rest is nice and fine.
