I feel you on that last point. Often, people mistakenly talk about facts of media like video games and movies as if aesthetics, character traits, or the existence of plot twists weren't important enough to form their opinion of the media and are therefor 'spoiler-free'.
Point being, if it's a quality that stuck with them enough to repeat it to others, it was an experience that they ought not ruin for others. Let them have that same experience for themselves. Don't tell me "there's a twist" or "so and so has a mean streak" and such. It just helps to ensure you've robbed a little bit of my experience.
Great review! Glad you didn't gloss over the critical points.

My favorite part of Vesperia is that Yuri isnt really a chosen one. He is just a guy who decides "If no one else is gonna deal with this shit then I will damnit"

I wish the game had gotten SLIGHTLY more into what was going on with Raven behind the scenes like in his backstory manga. Suffice to say what we see in game is not a complete picture.

The best part of this game is Indeed Yuri himself. While the potential of the story could be explored more or just went more darker route, Yuri's act and his development in this game is just out of JRPG Protagonist Tropes IMHO.

This is one of about four games that convinced me to buy an XBOX 360 back in the day xD
But I'm glad we got it on every platform today. I know Vesperia has its flaws, but it was the end of an era with the Tales series, being the last console entry in the "Symphonia style"
I wish you could have gone into this one blind, not knowing where the game is going, especially with Yuri, is really part of what makes this game what it is

You thought Repede was "meh"? He's best boy!
My favourite track would have to be the one from that desert town, you know the one... The track is called "On the Other Side of the Mirage", but I can't really say anything more than that without spoiling things. I also liked the second battle theme (I think it was the second one). It's been so long since I played the game. I first played it all the way back on the 360. I probably am about due to pick it up again.
    Great review, as always!

Great review, Lady pelvic! Hair flip at the beginning was amazing! I wouldn't say hype ruins a game for me, but I would say that hype causes me to expect things from a game, and if the expectation isn't met, I'm disappointed? I guess that's it? I'm not really sure. People hyped "Suikoden 2" for you, and the game blew your expectations, and people hyped "Chrono Trigger" for you, and it didn't quite blow away your expectations. With that said, hype doesn't really ruin a games' experience; maybe it's our expectations of the game's experience after hearing the hype that ruins the experience, if that makes sense. Anyway, keep up the great work!

Thanks for the solid review. Is this game a good starting point for someone who has only played the original on ps1? I have a ps4 and Xbox one. Other recommendations? Xillia, berseria? Edit: are the stories connected from game to game or is it like final fantasy with no connections and a different cast each time?

    • @PelvicGaming
      @PelvicGaming  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Highly recommend Bersaria. Tales of is like FF, some are connected some aren't. Berseria and Zestiera are connected...but you can totally skip Zesteria... that game sucks. Tales of the Abyss is a great one. Xilla 1 and 2 are pretty nice too. Graces F is my first and I fell in LOVE.

I think Xillia is a great starting point. Berseria is awesome too, it's just that the combat is so different that if you play that first then go back to the games before it. You might not be into it that much because the combat is completely different.

Hype doesn't usually throw me all that much. Like, the only time hype tends to bother me is if people dump on something else to try to elevate a game.
"Yo-Kai Watch is so much better than Pokemon!" is such a disservice, because it was never going to compete with a world that had such an enormous head start on it, for example. that's the kind of hype that puts me off.

In my personal opinion, Vesperia is a good game however the Definitive Edition could have been much better handled (ie fixing up audio issues in the skits and battles and such), and the story really should have stuck with the vigilante aspect imo instead of pulling what it did with it's third act. Probably me, but I'd say my personal favorite Tales game would be Xillia 2, that game hasn't gotten old for me at all and i keep learning more and more with it each playthrough.

Totally feel you on the plot. There was so much potential for the politics and vigilante aspects but they ultimately didn't really go anywhere.
Same with the global warming aspects. I thought it was interesting and had a lot of potential as well...but it was just sloppily handled and resolved too easily.
    Great premises, intriguing developments...underwhelming conclusions.

    • @kiki-fc1eh

I disagree, the emperor who stayed at the end Ioder was aware of the corruption between the government and he promised Yuri to take care of it, Flynn will help him too when it comes to the soldiers side because he gained the respect that Alexei had. So the things would change and were changing when they get to Duke, Estelle is a princess too and she is aware and saw first hand what the corruption can do. And about the Global problem, Rita explained well and the focus of it was the they needed to stop using blastia for their everyday life which is the equivalent of saying today "hey stop using petroleum because is harming the Earth" people won't take it too well so the best thing they could do was negotiate with Ioder and the guilds who are the ones ruling after all and they get to an understanding, something that they didn't have before ever so that's a huge advantage. They did it pretty well for me I would had been pretty upset if everything was fixed easy and quick, the corruption will take years to stop and the adephagos was something they needed to stop fast because the world was going to die and the only way was changing the world completely. Something that they did with the spirits. But that's my humble opinion.

Can you believe that back in the day I bought an Xbox 360 just to play this sucker, and a year or so later I was treated to the announcement that Namco was releasing the same game but for the PS3 and with more content and only in Japan?
You'd think that after nearly ten years and after having the complete game release in every platfform under the sun that I'd feel less salty, but NOPE, I still feel as salty now as I did back then, and that's why I've sworn to always keep my hype in check and never give my complete trust to any game developer or publisher. Because in the end they are in it for the money, and whether we consumers get what we deserve or not, is another matter altogether.
Well, that got real dark real quick...
On a more positive note, I am quite happy that you really liked the opening theme, the one who sings it is actually one of my favorite artists of all time. Her name is Bonnie Pink BTW.

hey! got this video recommended to me by a friend on twitter because i can't shut up about this game lol. loved this review from beginning to end, you're very informative, your speaking voice is excellent, and i loved your critiques. this is my favorite game and so we disagree on a lot, but i can definitely understand all your points. especially your thoughts on the story, it was very well explained without the need for spoilers and i honestly agree haha. the themes of justice were kinda dropped and even if that was done to allow players to come to their own conclusions on what's just and not it could've been done better.
i do think combat gets unfortunately put down, even early game. there are so many mechanics that encourage the game's combo system that require work from the player's side and that's what i like about it. even when you're limited at the beginning i'd say it's pretty fun! but again, i see where you're coming from just wanted to give more discussion in regards to your points
i'm also bummed the hype killed a lot of your enjoyment. it's weird though, the game got an 8/10 in the end but you still talked about it in a negative light but for me at least, an 8 is still great and much higher than average. i get that it wasn't necessarily a masterpiece like you were hoping, but i would think that there'd be more praise surrounding what you consider a great game regardless of if it wasn't the peak of the series like you had hoped. just some criticism if you don't mind me doing that
sorry for writing a book i just love it when there's more tales content out on youtube. you're great and i want to see more from you! hope you're having a good day

It’s not my favorite tales of, and going from playing Abyss (Which has a battle system I really enjoy) to this was a little jarring. I got used to it, but there’s a certain....I don’t know how to describe it; lag? A certain kind of lag to the combat that makes it sorta challenging compared to other Tales. Abyss I felt like I was truly in control, and if I was hit it’s my fault. But not so much here. Not to mention the lack of combo ingenuity. I enjoy the characters enough. Not my favorite, but I enjoy Yuri and Troy Baker (when it’s his original recordings and not the voice replacement for the new ones) is a big part of that. Still need to beat it. This is no Abyss or Symphonia in quality , but it’s also no Legendia in low quality.

Really appreciate the fresher perspectives. I think one thing gaming reviews stumble with are the reasons behind the praise and criticism. Fanboys can get butt hurt when someone shows a dissenting opinion... When in reality it's fine to disagree as long as it's clear where someone's coming from.

Honestly Pelvic its hard to find games beyond the PS2 generation that actually had such a rich and diverse cast of characters. So many games these days just have so many supporting fodders that are just sort of their, its kind of disheartening to be honest. Also games in this generation are restricted because of technology, gone are the times were we can sit and experience an 80 hr epic unfold and no FF XV with a glorified empty space of a world with like 20% plot even though you can play over 100 hrs is not one of those games lol. I am taking like a true story driven game like xenogears, legend of dragoon, Shadow hearts, Breath of fire. Man i miss the early days of gaming.

It honestly depends on the propety.
Like Persona 5 was hyped up but I enjoyed it and found the hype was warrented.
But games like Persona 4 and final fantasy 7 were so overhyped it kept me from enjoying them for a long time, and when I did there were still issues that prior and future titles fixed.
But fans of those praise sung titles wouldn't aknowledge. There are fans who admit p4's cast could use work alot of them are flat and the same goes for the ff7 crew (I wish tifa was more than just "Cloud? where's cloud? what's cloud doing?")
But you have that slew of fans who won't admit the flaws and point them to other series/ titles in their own or outright cover their ears in protest.
As I've aged I just gotten tired so Instead I try to focus on titles I'll enjoy even if they don't get the love some other titles get.

I think Persona 5 hype still needs to be tempered.. at least to the grand story. Gameplay was absolute fire though. And fans that can't admit a games flaws are problematic...Nothing wrong with loving a flawed game. (My love for NieR is unparalleled)

Hype is.....an interesting beast to tackle. Honestly I think Hype does more to hurt a lot of the games I like than it does to enhance them, though that isn't a hard and fast rule. I think the biggest issue I tend to have is that games that I feel are Over-hyped, or actually any media where people are unanimously praising something makes me feel like I shouldn't indulge it. Not because I think it'll be bad, but because I feel like I have an expectation of the game, and maybe even a chip on my shoulder to feel like the game isn't as great as I've heard. I don't like judging any piece of media with such a skewed outlook, so I usually tend to avoid them, or procrastinate on getting through them. Most things like that tend to get my personal "This is probably good but I'll never touch it with a 10ft pole" award, just because I don't feel comfortable going in with such polarized expectations.
On the other hand though, Hype can also help create community, and I think that can be a lot of fun. Riding a Hype wave can be great, especially if you already know you're going to enjoy something. The lead-up to SoulCalibur 6 for me was such a crazy ride, to the point that I actually took the weekend off just to play it on release, and I had a great time with it. But that said, Hype is also something that for me winds down rather quickly. I don't play SoulCal as much as I'd like, but then again that's my issue with every fighting game I pick up. And of course on the other side of the coin, there's also games that have Burned me a lot when I've been excited for them. Dragon Age 2 was a game I was incredibly excited for, as DA:O is among my favorite games of all time. But my experience with that game was....less than stellar, and put me off of pre-ordering anything that I don't already have a solid idea of its merit for. It made me a lot more skeptical of Hype in general, and diminished how much I get excited when a given game is set for release (Barring notable titles like SoulCal6). Overall I think Hype is a double edged blade, as it can really skew your experience, and your perspective on a given piece of media, but it can also just be a lot of fun to actually let yourself be excited. It's not a sin to have expectations, it just hurts more if they're not lived up to.

Great review. I was thinking of getting it and I might eventually but I feel like it's one I can wait on. Meanwhile I'm replaying the Grandia series on the switch. The hype factor Depends .... I can usually tell whether hype is deserved or not since I was lucky enough to play a lot of these games before the hype hit them... but I slowed down on the rpg’s for quite a while cus I was grinded out. I picked up tales of visperia for switch and I never heard much hype but it was exactly what I thought it would be. Enjoyable but not deep. Positive and colourful... but also kiddish cartoon at times. I did like the battle system cus turn based rpgs really aren’t thing anymore cus I’ve done them for decades and I want new experiences. Anyways. Love your vids :) thanks for being rad and real

So glad I gave this game another chance! I'm really loving it now. Best soundtrack in a Tales game without a doubt and I love the cel shaded style. I wish they'd return to it for future titles. It's very charmin. I'm not entirely sold on the Xillia style they've been using for a while. I find it somewhat bland in comparison.

I agree with the review. I failed to realize the game was released on the switch until a week after I bought it on Xbox 🤦🏻‍♂️ It was good, but honestly couldn’t be bothered to finish the game. I don’t have much free time nowadays and refused to spend it on a game that I felt so mediocre about. Have you played tales of phantasia? That’s the best tales of game in my opinion. Classic.

It's crazy to think that i played of the Xbox360 version with one of the most important side characters missing, it must have took so much effort to remove Patty i honestly have no clue how they did it. Of course Patty has a childlike voice, she's a child. A much better character than Karol imo, but I played Patty quite a bit, especially once she was getting strong, very fun addition and her side story was honestly the best character development in the game outside of Yuri/Raven. I do my best to avoid using main protag, as he's usually the strongest and I see enough of him anyways. I played mostly Repede and Judith, they made very good use of the execute mechanic. I wish the game was shorter, it's hard to continue caring about a lackluster Tales story for 80 hours, let alone playing it twice to get everything. The character's facial animations are worse than the Xbox360 version, it's all so round and everyone has a frog like face, but it runs pretty good. definitely a worthy remaster of the stiff feeling original version. It's still stiff, but it feels better.
As far as the comment goes about hype, it doesn't effect my enjoyment of a game, but it would often steer me away from playing something, knowing that it's too good to be true. But i often have this bad habit of spoiling a game for myself, but only if it's something i predict will happen, and I have yet to be wrong, minus a few small details, not sure when that started, but I definitely didn't do it when i was younger. It's almost better for me to know whats going to happen sometimes than be disappointed by the lack of their being something special. Any Tales game after Abyss has had a lackluster and predictable story imo, the Tales games are carried mostly by their excellent gameplay and gear/ability systems.

Great review, per usual, I will say that I really tried to get into this game, I have it on the Xbox One, and poured about 16 hours in before I finally admitted that it really just wouldn't stick. I don't really know what it was? I think it was many small things overall? The over acting in the voices, the cumbersome battle mechanics, the lackluster soundtrack, no characters really pulled me in, and you're right about the random story arch. I actually liked Tales of the Abyss better, haha!! Overall the graphics aged great in this game, but not much else, just my opinion of course, and the hype I felt isn't totally deserved. Hype when it comes to (j)rpg's can muddle the waters, for me at least. It sometimes makes me put a game aside that I maybe would've naturally gravitated to on my own, only due to being burned by hype in the past. It inevitably creates a false sense of expectation, making me at times wonder when the game is going to get mind blowing, and not just "pretty dang good". There's really only one jrpg i feel lives totally up to its insane admiration, and that's Chrono Trigger. Other than that the praise and hype are for the most part somewhat deserved when it comes to games like FFVI, Golden Sun, Xenoblade, Radiant Hystoria, etc... but I've seen and heard a lot of hype for games that are normally special and near and dear to one's subjective nostalgic bias. Cheers!!

  • @brightcrazystar93
    @brightcrazystar93 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Just found your channel. One point of note: The issue is not "Global Warming" - the issue is the "alignment conflict" in Yuri is what is at stake on a Global level. He *wishes* everything could be Lawful, but he knows otherwise. But, he actually admires the lawful optimism, which will utterly collapse if the barriers of the cities come crashing down. And because of its optimism, it would be delusion if not for the people who don't fit the model trying to preserve it. The whole cast wishes they could be "normal", and it because they are not that anyone else can be. They *have* to be stronger because they are all they have. The issue is about NATURE vs NURTURE. People in these very peaceful and protected sanctums can be free of anything which forces them to face an ordeal of self on their own terms, which all the main cast have to do, because - well, someone has to put in work. Nature isn't nice, as Yuri learns. It is like "Civility" is what he cannot have, but he sacrificed his to let others preserve it.

I'm the type of crazy lady that manages to spoil herself with a mystery game twist and still enjoy playing it. For some reason, I get caught up in the game whenever I play it for the first time. For me, if a game can convey an emotional scene well, it's definitely enough.
That said, it does feel great when you don't know anything about a game and play it blindly.

Great review as usual. Being my second tales of I really had a good time but not without its issues
The criticism of the story shift from political corruption and vigilantism to saving the world was my biggest peeve finishing a second playthrough onto my 3rd
I enjoyed the combat throughly especially when you experiment with the arte, skills, and characters but I can see why people will have a problem in earlier chapter since the cast is somewhat unviable besides yuri.
The cast was very good limo especially with Karl, estelle, patty, and Yuri.
A criticism I have for the game in later parts bosses that aren't gigantos have an excessive use of overlimit. Fell arms where a drag to get for half of the cast and you need to beat the game to get its upgrade and dukes 3rd form being an ANNOYANCE.
Smaller details like the enemy animations like the super star were pretty funny.
And for your hype question Im never really bothered by that even with low expectations since I just want a fun game

Hi, I’m a bit late to the party but I just saw your review and wanted to leave my thoughts! This is actually one of my favorite games of all time so I really wanted to give my thoughts on your review. I think you have the game a fair assessment despite you airing some of the grievances that you had going into the experience. I do think when it comes to media that is very popular with people there’s a tendency for some to talk about what they like about it without considering the other person. I do think you probably would’ve appreciated the game more if you went in completely blind, as with anything you can really only wow yourself on a twist or turn the first time. The second thing I wanted to go over was the story and themes of the game, I can see why some people thought the conclusions to the game’s arcs were disappointing, such as the commentary on justice, sociopolitical allegories, and global warming. However I believe it’s more meant to be open-ended and left up to the interpretation of that player to see if they got something out of it. I personally really liked how the game explored justice and how it explored the morals of the characters and such and think that really goes into show how morals can truly be double-edged. Of course someone else could get something out of the messages, it’s really all up to how it’s perceived. Regardless, I liked your perspective on this and think it was a good assessment overall, nice review.
