  • To join the ‘re-beasted’ 1290 Super Duke R, KTM has released two new EURO 5 compliant motorcycle the KTM 890 Duke R.
    2020 KTM 890 Duke R Facts
    Based on the 790 Duke DNA, the 890 produces more power, more torque, and less harmful emissions from its parallel twin motor. And it has ‘racier’ rider ergonomics. Fitting, considering it’s nicknamed the ‘Super Scalpel’...
    It makes a fairly potent 119bhp (89kW) @ 9,250 and 73lb-ft (99Nm) @ 7,750rpm. That’s a 16hp and 9lb-ft gain compared to the 790. Its peak power is produced slightly later in the rev range, but it does have more immediate torque.
    Blingy new radially-mounted Brembo Stylema four-pot calipers biting a pair of 320mm discs produce the stopping power - cornering ABS is standard. The 890 is equipt with cornering traction control too, which is enabled by the Bosch 9.1 MP IMU-equipped braking controller. The rear caliper is a single pot, still working on a 240mm disc.

      Not having ridden either, I think that I can (partly) answer your question;
      The Yamaha is very civilised, great fun, reasonably powerful, and...and a bit bland? The Katooms will always outgun the Japanese competition where electronics and rider aids are concerned, and they'll upgrade them into the future as well. The Japanese machines will also be cheaper and almost certainly more reliable (though probably not as much more as you might expect).
      And the Yamaha will be in your garage and you'll probably think "Yeah, nice bike". It's neat, it's civilised, it does everything really well. With the KTM you might end up thinking "Oh my God, she's calling me again, how much longer can I resist?" And believe me, I know that feeling. I have a GS600 from 1995. I'm fortunate that my machine has a factory prepped engine, but I've ridden others. And they all demand attention. Mine is absolutely bonkers, she tries to kill me every time I take her out, she dislocated my shoulder the first time I rode her and she'll try it every time in the future. But there really is no substitute. By modern standards she's a bit portly, but there is nothing to compare. I call her Katie, but "Rosy" would probably be more appropriate.
      And the reason why KTM just keep growing is not that they do so much so well. The reason why they keep growing is because they enthuse people. They manage to make motorcycles that should be just competent into something that people really WANT.
      That is quite a trick.

      @@davidcolin6519 I David! Thank you for the time you spent replying my question. I think I got your point: eventually it's not about the specs or which bike is technically better. It's more like a love affair, an emotional thing. Still don't know which one I'm going to pick up but I think I'll go by instinct and if I'll end up 50% as happy as you are with your '95 GS600 it will really be top. Ride safe!

      @@giovanniricci4369 Very happy to help, and you are absolutely right, it is like a love affair (never a truer word, unfortunately, many a relationship has ended over the bike/no bike question). The stunning girl who might come on to you for one reason or another may be your fantasy, but the reality is that pretty women are high maintenance and often too self-centred to be a real proposition.
      Without wanting to sound sexist or anything else, beauty is always only ever skin deep and the essence of a bike is much harder to define. Probably the most beautiful AND successful bike in history (Ducati 916-998 series) is still one of the most cramped/uncomfortable experiences to be had on two wheels. A work of art? certainly, An every day, ride anywhere bike? You can't be serious.

    Sorry, but this was a pretty disappointing review....
    1. Buy a pop shield.
    2. Could you really not be arsed to quote the correct tyre name?
    3.Get your terminology locked down or stop contradicting yourself. "they are basically a slick tyre with the minimum amount of grip that you are allowed by law to make a road legal tyre, but they offer so much grip"... Eh????? Tread depth and grip are different things...
    4. Get your facts straight 1 - The suspension is not fully adjustable - there is no pre-load adjustment on the front forks.
    5. Get your facts straight 2 -They don't offer a non-R version of the 890?
    Sorry to sound so critical, but this was a pretty lazy overview.

    I've put near 2000miles on my 890 Duke since I picked it up last month.
    My last ride was a little over 400miles in 1 day. Some highway and mostly canyon/mountain roads. So you can do some light touring on this.
    I put a Kriega on the back and Ram mounts for a gps. USB charger at the front wired to the ACC. That's all you really need for a couple days out.
    Very fun bike. I'm happy with it's performance out of the box.
    Runs lean, fender is ugly (no surprise there), and muffler shield keeps my boot from tucking in as much as I like but nothing that can't be fixed.
    Tech pack, track pack, quickshifter etc are good options but most people would be fine without those.

I’m always interested in your reviews & recognise some of the roads you ride which kept me interested through lockdown. This KTM may be the next bike on my list, the 790 was an option before the STR but was dismissed on price, always loved the grunt of a twin tho, the Triumph needs to be in the right gear for unexpected overtaking opportunities on unfamiliar roads but who needs more speed on the road?! • @davidcolin6519
      @davidcolin6519 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't vouch for reliability either. My factory engined GS600 needs a new stator, but I've had her for more than 20 years and that's the only mechanical problem I've had. My friend has had his SD 990 for about 10 years and has never needed more than routine maintenance. I've known plenty of people with EXCs and LC4 engined bikes and never heard of significant problems. But that doesn't tell you anything really. I mean, I started out with Hondas in the 70s and they had a fabulous reputation. Except for the "Cam chain rattle" and then we had the "Plastic cams" and cam chain tensioner problems. And parts supply problems. And Hondas continue to be beautifully built, and they continue to be reliable...
      Hmm, I think the reliability of a brand is probably more closely related to the advertising budget of that brand, sorry to say. But I will add that the ONLY brand I will not buy is the Big H. Read that as you will.
      And your comment sums it all up, most bike riders can afford a little unreliability, what they aren't willing to put up with is an expensive machine that is boring.

      I'd rather that than have all the character polished off by committees. I really do think that you have an either/or situation here. You either want something that is maybe a little less refined but a lot more fun, or something that is supremely refined... but boring, something that is accomplished but prosaic, or something that lights your blue touch paper but spits in your girlfriend's soup.
      I'm in the fortunate position of not needing my bike to do everything well...well. My next bike will need to stir the soul, give me conflicting accounts of my own reason to live, annoy the neighbours, or maybe start a civil war. I don't WANT it to be just, well, "Capable".

    • @timothymills733

      @@davidcolin6519 Interesting analogy :-) I agree with you, but I want it to do both. I think the design brief of the KTM, and the functional execution is great; it is just the squared off edges and angles make it look, to me, like a test mule before they finished the production molds. Ducati, Aprilia, and Triumph finish off the aesthetics nicely in addition to making fun bikes. KTM's just look "roughed out" to me, but I know lots of folks love their looks, which is cool.

    • @davidcolin6519
      @davidcolin6519 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@timothymills733 Yeah, Ducati, Aprilia and Triumph all finish off their aesthetics. However, the only ones that truly stand out, and stand out to such an extent that you can literally tell at a glance from 400m, are the KTMs. I live on one of the most popular roads for riders from Barcelona and the only bikes that are that easily distinguished are the KTMs.
      I would add that it seems that their finish is constantly improving but, yeah, if you are trying to find that last kg, you end up making the finishing touches out of a thinner, lighter plastic than if you aren't on that edge.
      And that is where the likes of the Big Four will lose out. They have to meet the expectations of their generations of owners, they can't take risks. KTM are literally creating their legacy as we watch. It is very interesting watching it happen, especially with their tie-up with Red Bull. Both products are dependent on being "Edgy". I know from personal experience that Red Bull are very aware of this, and I suspect that KTM are, too. And it sure as f**k works, and it works everywhere. When you consider how long KTM have been producing road bikes (10? 15 years?) and then look at their market presence, that is a phenomenal progression. And I'm sure that part of that progression is as a result of that very distinctive look. You may not like it, and I know that lots of people don't, but it is every bit a part of KTM's spectacular rise... and their appeal. So, even if KTM could make more "Attractive" bikes, I don't think they would.

    • @timothymills733
      @timothymills733 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davidcolin6519 Excellent points. I totally agree that what KTM is doing is remarkable. When Triumph relaunched it took them a long time to create a complete lineup, and longer still to get to the point KTM has today. When you look at what KTM is doing in road racing, it is even more impressive. They have, in a remarkably short time, created a regular podium contender in MotoGP. I raced KTM MX bikes in my youth, and they were miles ahead in quality over their Japanese counterparts, so I do have a lot of respect for what the company can produce. I recall when they announced they were getting into street bikes, I was sceptical, but they have delivered. I wish I liked the looks better, but maybe when the current style fades I will like what comes next better :-) but more importantly, where is their Supersport? :-)

    • @davidcolin6519
      @davidcolin6519 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@timothymills733 I honestly think that their association with Red Bull has been enormously beneficial. I myself have worked with Red Bull and they are a spectacularly influential company, not just because of the money that they can bring, but because of the mindset that they have.
      Personally, I think the drink is vile, but the popularity of it means that the company makes so much money, and the 2 owners (it is still a private company) have so much money that they really can't spend it enough. The principle owner of RB is also a man of few real needs. He doesn't want expensive cars etc. So he ploughs the money into projects like RB racing. That has resulted in an investment scheme that has brought huge benefits to people and organisations that wouldn't have normally benefited.
      RB's involvement with KTM goes a long way back, and their attitude has certainly influenced KTM's business plan. If you think that HRC's finances are bottomless, think again. The Alpha Toro (née Toro Rosso) project has a bigger racing budget than the whole of HRC. When you think that HRC includes the MotoGP team, the WSBK team, the F1 engine project team and various other, minor teams, that may indicate to you the extent of the Alpha Toro Team's budget. And THEY are the 2nd RB team! The inside line is that RB has been waiting for the factory katooms to be competitive before they wheel out the budget to bring real "Name" riders into that MotoGP team. Currently, it looks like they won't need to spend it.
      But that just shows the level of commitment that KTM have. Word also has it that the owners of KTM have a bit of a "thing" with Honda. I suspect that it's related to KTM's early experience in the MX classes, at a time when HRC had a full fat team that dominated, and manipulated world championships, and also dismissed KTM as "know nothings" and "Small Fry".
      As for the styling; I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you. As I've pointed out, that edgy styling has got them where they are, and it is now very much a part of their DNA. I think it is far more likely that others will start to mimic it, in much the same way that excavator manufacturers have mimicked the JCB yellow, even though other companies had never used yellow in their paint schemes before.
      Nor do I think that you should hold your breath for a Supersport. The owners of the company have already said that race bikes on the road are a ludicrous proposition (that was when they decided to abandon the RC8 line and concentrate on the Super Duke line). And I honestly agree with them. Most people don't need, and honestly can't handle/take advantage of a SS type bike, but once you take the track out of the SS equation, you end up with bikes like the 890. Unless you are really going to compete, what does that SS nomination actually mean? It means that you're designing a mass market product around an extremely narrow set of parameters.
      Kawasaki recognised this ridiculous situation when they released the 636. But Kawasaki kept the SS philosophy.
      KTM have abandoned it altogether, and I applaud them for it.
      Sorry fo the length of the post.

    KTM should have launched this in India instead of the 790. Kick-ass one, this..

    I'll be honest Toad, firstly I do like your reviews. I think they're decent and untainted in content, but the delivery leaves a lot to be desired, not from you but from the shooting. Just stood next to a bike in.a field and yapping on about it whilst showing official PR shots isn't optimum for an audiovisual format. Fine for a magazine, but not in the format you're presenting. You can no longer use covid as an excuse to be sat in your council house garden. Not meant to be tough, just realistic. Check out what the competition are doing...you're miles behind.

    You don't seem as happy as some other journalists who just fell in love with this bike. Something seemed to be bothering you the whole time... Hhmmmm

      The Street Triple 765RS is a weapon on the road or track. That said this 890 Duke R offers something different. While they both do pretty much the same thing the Triumph is a gentlemen while the KTM is a hooligan...
