Your absolutely right about the ‘expensive’ extras. I’ve had two 1290R’s and had to pay for dongles and ‘packs’ etc, outrageous. All they achieve is sending people out the door to competing brands that are pay and ride. And don’t get me started on the costs of servicing at the dealer $$$$$$$$. Just like Apple, fantastic products but so overpriced. I feel better now LOL

    • @nicholaskemp2451

I have a SDR and the extras are certainly a disappointment. I want everything on a bike. Paying extra for someone to plug a computer in to allow me to have something I expect is...how did he put it...mean.

Oh don't start me on KTM servicing costs. Exactly 3 times more expensive than a service on my car.
As for the add on parts. I love my 1290 R but I will never buy another one. As for KTM UK..... My bike was due its first proper service during covid lock down, I asked KTM if they can extend the time on the yearly service. The reply was pretty much well too bad you bought the bike and it's up to you to service it and if you don't your warranty will be void. Back to Japan for me next time, or potentially Germany if the named S1000R gets made.

    • @Nialsy999

I have loved my 1290r. But I would not rush out and get another KTM, just for all the reasons of cost. Has been super reliable so far.

@HahrtDood My keyless system failed and had to have a complete immobiliser unit replaced. Good job it was just inside warranty or that would have been expensive.

I’d agree, but it’s main competition is the Street RS, which is still more expensive than a 890R with the Techpack(Everything)

  • @yonniboy1

Jeremy McWilliams who was instrumental in the 890Rs development is a neighbour of mine so I was really eager to get his take on it as I'd been really impressed by the 790, he was gushing with praise for the 890R and said realistically a better comparison was the 890R and 1290 Superduke as the 890 was over a second quicker than the 1290 around KTMs test track, he also said the one and only place the 1290 beats the 890 is in a straight line but if you have a race between 2 points on the map if offered which bike on which to do it he'd pick the 890R every time, high praise indeed!

    • @pasiutrial

Never rode 1290 SD but my experiences are much similar. I was slow on the 150 hp FZ1, bike was heavy and demanding. 790 feels like a toy in comparison, but a crazy quick toy. It's way more manageable therefore one is gonna be quicker on a track despite having 50 hp less.

Glad there is a mention here on manufacturers almost obsessive quest for power.Fact is as you get older you realise it is much more rewarding to ride something with less bhp that you can actually tap into and use to the max rather than a 200bhp beast that is barely above tickover before you are breaking speed limits.

  • @lukaszg74

People who are saying mt10 is underpowered have no clue . How much power you need on a naked bike . I can bearley hold on to that bike on full throttle. All this power war is unnecessary on a bike with no fairings . Its only making those bikes more expensive

I've seen 7000 GBP bikes here in UK - to me it's a steal and I'm not even looking towards the 890R. 100 bhp is plenty enough for a weekend blast and you get all the electronics and quick shifter for free. Stash another 1,5k for the new, customized to your weight suspension and you've got an absolute weapon of a bike. Sorry 890R, maybe in some other lifetime ;)

I have a 790 and love it as it ticks all the boxes .However there are some well reported quality of parts issues ,yes I've had a few ,but ktm appear to not have rectified these even on the 890 coolant and oil leaks matched with cheap plastics to name a few .would I buy the 890 ,simply no .Id rather upgrade the suspension on the 790 and keep that .

Seems funny that people get upset with KTM giving you a base model (for a base price) and then letting you pay for "extras" to improve the package at your will. Doesn't that make more sense than making 3 different models of bike with different spec (ie Street triple S, R and RS)?
If you like the 890 no one is forcing you to but the extras but if 6 months on you decide you want the "track pack", or the tech pack, you can buy it. You don't have to sell the bike and buy the next model up?

    • @kirkdunn1379

Iv just test rode the 790 890 and the bonkers 1290 and i went for the 790 ! why ! well the 1290 so more a track missile and just bonkers on the road, great bike but jeez you have to be on your toes with it all the time to the point of pananoid with it ! not a good way to enjoy a live with a bike, the 890 very very nice and in my opinion not a big step up from the 790, yes the 890 has better wp suspension and it has brembo's but i found the suspension on the 790 fine for what i use the bike for (commuting and a hooligan tool at the weekend) power wise ok the 890 has 10ish give or take bhp more which i didnt really notice on the 3 days i had each bike ! what made my mind up was the 790 fully loaded with all the electronic packs as standard ! i just paid £6895 !!! on the road ! the 890 is what £10400 standard ! then as you say KTM being KTM decide you now have to pay for the electronic packs on top of the base price ! which now takes the 890 upto £11000 + depending where you buy it from ! thats £4000 more than the 790 ! iv had the 790 now 3 days put 300 miles on it and love it , do i miss the fully adjustable wp suspension err no, do i miss the extra few bhp the 890 has err no again, would i trade a 790 for a 890 ? deffo no as there is just not enough difference between them to justify changing ! but i still have a smile across my face with the 790 and iv saved £4k which is a hell of a lot of KTM power parts to be bought and when fitted will make this 790 very very nice indeed.

I had the same thoughts, went to buy a 890R and was amazed I had to pay for the quick shifter to be enabled, £11k on the road, or £7200 for the 790 duke, no brainier, it’s 90% of the 890R for a £3800 saving, I’ve spent £800 of that saving on an end can, tail tidy, factory decals kit, K&N filter and fuel booster, looks the business, sounds the business and goes like stink, £8k spent, job done and 2 years warranty.

KTM I'm sure would be surprised to see how many sales they lose. Greed and avarice, nothing more nothing less.
Better for KTM and it's network of dealers to sell ten at a $100 than to sell one at a $1000.
Fiat found this out the hard way when they first put the Fiat 500 on the market at a highly inflated price, just like Toyota is with the new Yaris.
Once again, amazing products but greed gets in the way.
I'm not for a minute saying they shouldn't make a profit, but there's a big difference but a good profit and a huge profit.
But even when I brought numerous KTM's and especially the two 1290R's, even the salesperson told me that KTM aren't interested in there feedback about their malevolent behaviour.
I was going to buy the new third edition of the 1290R but after getting all the add ons it's so close to a Ducati Streetfighter V4S I'm going for it.
Also another important point is scheduled maintenance, here the Ducati is much more competitive.
It's a shame as I love the 1290R but nowdays especially you have to think of all of the above and at some point selling, and once again the Ducati will outperform the KTM.
I know what I sound like but take the emotion out, there's are expensive machines and I can't see the point of throwing good money after bad.

KTM may vary well sell the most motorcycles but we are talking about two specific models, 1290R & 890R. Sure you can bike these models and ride out of the dealership but if you want to access there real potential potential you have to pay to get the codes to UNLOCK them!
You buy these bikes to have fun, wheelies etc.
So it's user pays, and if not, hard luck.
Other makes have all these features as standard.
So KTM effectively positions it's product (1290R & 890R) as if you want the real deal you pay what we say and if not we don't care, there's the front door, start walking.
As I've said a number of times, there amazing bikes, but only only if you PAY TO PLAY.
I can talk from experience as I've owned two 1290R's plus two 690's and one 790.
KTM are excellent motorcycles, no question but it's pricing strategy for these specific models are driving buyers out the door.
In my local dealer in Sydney there's 2019 & 2019 new models still sitting on the dealer floor!
They would sell many more if they changed their pricing policy.

Great bike got a 22 890R, KTM is showing its greedy side by installing quick shift and track pack and charging you extra to unlock it - cheap bastards! Aside from that extra grand it will cost you, the bike is fantastic and is an absolute giant killer in the canyons!

I'm over naked bikes they are overrated, even going on a short 1 hour trip on the highway is awful with the wind blast.

I don't even notice it until the $2 mark. Probably need to back off before then anyway if I want to avoid police intervention. Even on track days I'm only 30km/h slower than my racing bike at the end of the main straight but feel 60km/h faster.

If you want a fun bike save all cash just buy their Duke 390 it had minor issues and that current one as a commuter and weekend can also do it all. You won't get massive power but then again it's probably still quickest 400 well least not that kawasaki 400 has arrived. These big bikes don't seem to have much appeal anymore like small machines 😁💯

Doesn't matter how good this KTM is, I'll always have trust issues with reliability of KTM's. Usually their radiator coolant gets mixed with engine oil 😣

I really love the design of the KTMs. In fact, for my level of riding, I would love to buy RC390 for a track day since it is so light and sexy looking. HOWEVER, I am still quite concerned about the build quality compared to other Japanese bikes... 🤔🙄

KTM's European so it's not "build quality" it's "Euro Quirkiness"
      wink wink nudge nudge.
But yea, the poor quality control is the main reason I'm afraid to buy one.
