      Yes that's why I watch them! And Chris can actually ride and talk about what he feels. Most others don't even know how to ride and talk about "feel" but just repeat what every other reporter says or what they read! I enjoy watching these videos. I'm like Chris an ex racer and just enjoy riding like an absolute goon. So I really value his feedback! Big fan of Bike World all the way from down under in Aus! Cheers boys

    This is exactly what I want to see in a review, to know how it rides, what it does well and what it doesn’t, from somebody who rides loads of bikes, knows what he’s talking about, and makes it fun to watch. Bloody brilliant, thanks for the videos.

    Two weeks ago I gave the 890 R a testride. The engine is fine, delivering progressive power where and how you need it on the road. But the real surprise is the way this bike inspires confidence - it really feels as if you had ridden it for years after the 3rd or 4th turn. And your statement about the suspension confirmed my impressions as well: compliant on the bad stuff and reassuring on the fast stuff. It is amazing how far stock bikes have developed, as the Duke reminded me a lot of a heavily reworked Duke 990 with expert suspension tuning - but with better driveability overall. If money was no issue I´d have come out of the KTM-dealer with a signed contract. The Duke 890 R is a rare breed, as it inspires a lot of confidence without being too linear or boring - it surely isn´t.

    Chris is a talented rider and I always enjoyed the articles in the mags where he was featured... I paid quite a premium for UK bike mags here in the US but worth it. I’m so happy to see Chris and so many other UK journos in video reviews now, Hogan and Hargreaves and the Baron! Thank you all so much 😇

    Was trying to decide between the 2021 Street Triple, new MT09 and this KTMs 890r for several months before seeing this review. Upon witnessing your thorough spanking of this bike and gushing praise the vacillating was over and the 890 duke r was sitting in my drive. Thanks Chris! I agree with the review. I rode the new Superduke R and the 890 Duke back to back a few weeks ago. The Superduke R is great, but was not nearly as impressed with the handling as I was with the 890. It really was very confidence inspiring in the bends and you never felt uncomfortable about pushing it even after only a few minutes on the bike. A really great package.

    Thanks for a great review, the information about how well the suspension felt on rough secondary roads, but still handled well was great to hear. After “fixing” my soft MT09 suspension it handled great on smooth corners but was really harsh on the typical B roads here. Im now awaiting the build and delivery of a 21 Duke 890R in part due to this review!

  • @mfbfreak
    @mfbfreak 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It really is fantastic. Test rode it last week. The suspension and seat are a bit harsh, but still totally doable on normal well maintained roads.
    The engine is incredibly quick to respond on everything, yet it will happily run at very low revs to quietly and slowly roll through little villages.
    For such an intense bike, it is surprisingly well behaved in normal traffic.
    But in the end, i just feel too sad holding it and myself back. It truly is a track/hooligan machine and on the road in normal traffic i just felt like 'aww damnit, this thing can do such amazing things but i can't do any of them'.

    You're absolutely right about the hooligan part. You start with an MT-07 when you start to feel the hooligan biker growing in you. And once you've reached your final form you grab an 890 Duke. Then you don't leave that bike until they give us a more powerful lighter weight platform. That's the only way we'll trade up. More horse, less pounds. And shouts to my other hooligans that only have the front wheel on the ground 50% of the time. Ripping away from every stoplight like there's a medical emergency. Slide the rear so much your hips learn to pick it up and autocorrect like traction control. Calamari Race Team for life

    Pillion seat and foot pegs are delivered with a new bike and can be mounted for you by the dealer. It's just more common to have this bike reviewed with a pillion cover and without second pair of footpegs, it's also a few kilograms lighter like that. So worry not, you can still take your GF/SO on the bike without having to pay for extra passenger options :-)

    Great review, just got a 22 890R and its everything claimed and then some, best handling bike I have ever ridden. The only bad side is KTM loading track pack and quickshift on all the 890R models and charging an extra grand to unlock, whoever is in charge of this needs to be fired!

    Hey Chris! Entertaining review as usual.
    So is it better than the hypermotard 950 sp? If it is, then how does it compare to its bigger sibling, the 1290r?

    • @kretccx
      @kretccx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Andy Freeman thanks for Your input. Isn't it funny how we realize and know that smaller capacity bikes are actually more fun and better for 'normal' everyday riding but we still buy the fireblades and superdukes.

    • @kretccx
      @kretccx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Andy Freeman'Throttle wheelies in any gear' sold it for me haha. Took the hypermotard 950sp for a test ride recently and really enjoyed it. Almost swapped it for my 2015 blade! Will test ride superduke and 890 soon. I think I'd go for the 1290 as I'd miss the torque. If i could afford to keep two bikes it would be the blade and hypermotard or 890.

    • @chrisnorthover7582
      @chrisnorthover7582 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hit the nail on the head there @Andy Freeman with the comparison to the 1290 - big one for big spaces and big smiles, 890 for more everyday usability. Regarding the Hypermotard 950, its a very different bike to the KTM - bit more of a sports bike, a bit more focussed and not so easy to ride every day as the 890. Honestly, I love the Hypermotard but for a fun road bike I'd pick the Duke 890 every time.

    Maybe a coupe of complaints, but honestly they are common with many sports bikes these days: Give it a couple more liters of fuel capacity, please! And give it a decent sized subframe, a useful back seat or some kind of platform to strap down a bag or something. Otherwise, it's probably the most idea machine ever. Fast enough to not become boring in the acceleration and/or limits department.

      Skinny spoked rims n you'll have a super motard - there's a guy on the forums that did the reverse turning his 790 Adventure into a super motored. Issues with abs sensors due to wheel diameters was his biggest issue. But if you stick with 17's and add knobies - rally away.

    • @jimbojonesporfavor
      @jimbojonesporfavor 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been test riding both. The KTM is a much more usable road/commuter bike in my opinion. So much torque it's an easy ride. Street triple is more stylish, better finishing, and possibly a more accomplished track bike. Both are great but I only track on occasion and ride 2-3x a week.

    • @chrisnorthover7582
      @chrisnorthover7582 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, same roads and actually two pretty different bikes. The Ducati feels more like a sports bike - happier ridden fast and smooth, but with a tonne of pull low down to fire it out of corners. The KTM is a bit more playful, letting you skid it about a bit more and muck around. The KTM is definitely easier to ride, while the Ducati has a bit more character to it - great once you're used to it, but can be hard work at first.

    • @chrisnorthover7582
      @chrisnorthover7582 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ooh and to answer the actual question... for that road and mucking around having fun, I'd pick the KTM.

  • @mattsbigadventureuk4864
    @mattsbigadventureuk4864 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    @bike world - an exhaust and suspension upgrade plus remap, gearing and tyres would make the standard 790 bike as good, if not better for around 2.5k plus a new bike deal around 6.5k totalling 9k. Is the R model worth the extra 1.5k? Am I missing something, what do you guys make of the comparison? Great video as always!

    • @chrisnorthover7582
      @chrisnorthover7582 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a good point and you could certainly make a 790 pretty close to this, maybe better for some things, maybe not. It's an age old choice to make and ultimately comes down to if you prefer a stock standard new bike, warrantied, all working as it should or if you like to modify and play around with your bike a bit and are happy to accept the potential insurance increase and time in the garage doing the work that comes with the territory. Me? I'd want to know what an 890 with a cheeky pipe and a remap would feel like...

    Rode this bike back in August 2022 and just knew I had to have one as it's truely amazing. After 50 years riding all kinds of bikes (present bike 2020 Aprilia Tuono Factory), this thin is simply amazing. Fully recommended. Tyres totally dodgy in the wet. Fitting Pirelli Diablo Rosso IVs now. Track mode really unnecessary on road - far to agressive. Sport mode more than you need for street riding :-)

      hi there, i have been thinking of an 890r for close on two years now. like a lot of people, i have multiple bikes but ideally i would like to rationalise. i have a 2020 690smcr and have been thinking of swapping that out with the 890r and getting rid of a zzr1400 as well. my concern is that the 890r may be a bit too similar to my other bike - a 2020 aprilia tuono factory :-) i feel you may have the answer.
