Toyota Caught In A Flash Flood

  • We got a call late one night for a Toyota stuck in a flood. They were down by Mexican Hat Utah so we were hours away. They said they were in contact with the Sheriff's Department for rescue. I asked that they get the people out that way and we would come in after the flooding to avoid any additional danger. Another company had tried to get them while the flood was going and they ended up loosing their jeep. So we waited a couple days then went in and got it. It was pretty buried but not enough to get in the intake or engine. So we lifted it out of the sand and got it pulled out and he was able to drive it out and continue on his trip. I did get word from him recently that due to it being in the water that long the insurance company totaled it and he got a new truck. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.

I was 50 miles away in the backcountry when those storms came through. Just made sure I was camped and parked on high ground. Stayed put for a couple days before driving out so the roads were firm. Do not underestimate the flooding or mud out there!

Customer owned his mistake & has a heck of a story to go with it. Hats off to him. The service bill will be a lot cheaper than repairs down the road. That truck was really buried in. Good work & nothing broken is always a win. The thoughts from Rory are a good help. Whether working in sand & mud, to snow & ice, the recovery methods are universal. Thanks for sharing.

That's a great way to presoak a rig to make the dirt easier to move. It won't clean much, but it beats laying under a rig with a pressure washer trying to soak caked and dried mud with low volume 3000 psi water. It does make for a redneck mud bath though. I hear people pay for that at specialty spas these days.

FYI: A helicopter dispatch in Utah can be extremely expensive. My niece injured her ankle bicycling near Moab. The helicopter was a 10 minute flight away and flew about 8 minutes back to Moab where she was taken to the hospital. The helicopter ambulance bill was over $60,000. Her insurance paid only $30k. She still is making monthly payments of about $250/month several years later.

The goal was to make all ambulance services free but it turned out that was way more complicated so it didn't happen.

Super nice recovery !! Even after many many years that moab mud will be in the undercarriage. That Storm was Gnarly and I will definitely have another level of respect when I show back up in Moab the Best Off-road in the universe.
