Im really thoroughly enjoying having a local vege gardener to follow on youtube. Ive been working hard through winter to get my new veg garden ready for spring, and im nearly done digging the grass out of the last row. Ill be happy to never dig another strand of couch again. wishful thinking 😂 my capsicum seed was old too and didnt germinate. Such a difficult decision when to abandon and replant them.
Did i see onions up the back? Theyre looking good. I got mine in late and theyre still piddly little blades. 😂

Hi Tahliel good on you for converting lawn to garden beds. i understand how hard it is to do i turned over all my beds from lawn over the past few seasons. I would recommend you add a bit of organic matter to your new beds, when i first constructed my beds the soil was all top soil so i added alot of mushroom compost at the start and it helped sort out the structure of the soil.
Yeah capsicums are a pain. they seem to only respond to new seeds only. I had bought my seeds in bulk hoping to save money but will now look at only buying small amounts. the new seedlings took 3 weeks to germinate so give them time.
Those are spring onions i grow. I really struggle with root veggies in my place. try to grow spring onions all year round

Love these video mate. You know what might be amazing to add to your videos is a quick section at the end of a few video just showing how you cooked or used your veggies in the kitchen thanks for your videos mate.

Love the winter veg. I have mizuna bolting at the moment. If you snip the flower spike at the bottom of the plant it delays the plant putting all its energy in to flowering. You still get plenty of leaves.

Great update and video thanks. All my rocket has gone to flower too. I am going to pick my first cabbage today and I’m excited! I haven’t started spring seedlings so I might have to buy seedlings 😊

Lovely veggies as always, I'm finding the most frustrating thing being that it they don't bolt then the cabbage butterflies get them. I have loads of self seeded broccoli in the garden but I'm sure that the bugs will get to them before they start to produce food. Fingers crossed they produce soon. 🥦🥦🥦

Thanks for the update on the seedlings. Spring is just around the corner!
If you want a lettuce that seems to tolerate the heat I've had good results with a Cos called "Parris Island". ActiveVista and Seed Collection both carry it.
"Selway Red" also seems to do well in the Sydney climate. They are both my go-to now and I just pick leaves as we need them rather than havesting the whole thing. Takes up a lot less space and makes succession planting easier in my context.

Thank mate really appreciate this. I am always looking for tested varieties so i will definitely give these seeds a go. Its always hard to find varieties that others have actually tried and succeeded in so i will be getting these varieties

Hi Anthony, another entertaining video as usual. It's been a great season for Brassicas. The best I can remember. Started some of my spring seeds and the same as you my capsicums didn't sprout. I seen some seedling in Bunning yesterday for $3.00 some I'll use them instead. Good advice about bottom watering seeds as it also helps to prevent dampening off. Have a great week. Looking forward to the next one. Cheers 😊😊👍👍

Hi Keith i hope your capsicum seedlings do well. I have always grown capsicums from nursery bought seedlings and i always found that the fruit developed was always pretty small. It was only when i started using commercial hybrids that they produced a nice round big piece of fruit. Would be keen to see how yours do this year please keep me updated

@@sydneybackyardveggies9612 I'll let you know. The variety is California wonder. I have never had a successful crop with caps. Mostly through Fruit fly. This time I'm going to bag them like my tomatoes and see. if they don't work out, I'm going to try your variety. Cheers mate, keep up the good work.

Hi Anthony, I was wondering where do you get your seeds from? You seem to be able to source some quite unusual varieties. Love your videos. cheers Muffy.

At the moment i have been getting my seeds from active vista seeds, happy valley seeds and seed collection. I tend to look for commercial hybrids and am always on the look out for new stores and i shop between all of them. I have found a new Sydney based commercial seed company Petra seeds that focuses on cucumber and tomato commercial hybrids that i am trailling this year also.

I love seeing what you are up to every week in your garden Anthony! I’ll be keen to see how those new lettuce seeds go! I love Cos but you can’t grow it in the heat up here in Brissy. I find the oak leaf lettuce a bit bitter. Thanks for the tip about spraying the mango tree. Mine has lots of diseased leaves. What was the name of the product you used again?

Get copper oxichloride you can get it from bunnings and give the tree a spray monthly its a fungicide.

it's funny with bolting veggies. it seems it's more about the sudden change of conditions that causes the bolting, rather than absolute temperatures. some of these veggies can be grown in warmer season and not have the sudden bolting, because started in warmer conditions.
i dont bother much with easily available hot peppers. one year i grew so many jalapenos that i was struggling for dishes with them. we do like some spicy/hot dishes but it has to be on the basis of loving particular dishes, which call for specific type of heat spices and hot peppers. on the other hand i'm growing and looking for more mild peppers that have good flavor and can be used in all sorts of ways, both bells (capsicum) and banana type peppers.
do you grow beetroot? it's a favorite veggie for us, but often not too easy to grow. sometimes tends to stagnate and not produce big roots. we love beetroot soup--i have polish heritage--and also oven baked on low in foil for later use as side dish or salad or in risotto etc. taste very good.
i cant bottom water my big cell trays, as hopeless ubiquitous hardware store or even online, cant find suitable under trays. i just use a dramm 170 water breaker. covering seeds with vermiculite helps the mix hydrate more easily.

I grow alot of jalapenos because i make a candied jalapeno relish that i use on all my sandwiches and i make a years worth every year. For the banana type peppers do you have a go to variety you grow? I would like to grow more of them but the ones i get from the nursery only put out really small fruit so looking for better options.
I have grown beetroot in the past but i am more driven to planting fruiting veggies. I will be looking at adding more growing space so will be looking at expanding to more root veggies - beetroots and carrots
