When your done harvesting what do you do with the rest?
Once you harvested the main top head, most broccolis will develop side shoots with smaller top heads for second or third harvest. And if you let them go flowering (bolting), you can harvest the seeds. Hope this answers your question and thank you for visiting!
Beautiful broccoli! 😃 I'm in zone 8a Central Texas. We've already seen temps in the upper 80s and low 90s. We don't grow broccoli in the spring here. Would I be able to grow that heat tolerant one you just showed us? I could use shade cloth...would that help?

I live in Texas too I was gonna ask the same.
I live in SoCal 9b, and from all broccoli varieties I 've grown, this is the best heat tolerant one (Gypsy comes second). It takes awhile to start developing heads, but from emerging to harvest, heads grow very fast which is a big advantage on bolting issue. I had this growing in max 80F and didn't notice any sigh of bolting. If you think it will stay like that for a while, I'd say go for it. Interestingly they grow slow when it is cold, so the heat is an advantage for this variety. Hope this helps. Happy growing and thank you so much for your comment!

105 days to harvest?! I live in U.P. Michigan, we still have snow on the ground. Can't plant outside until late May. I guess I should start inside now - can another fertilizer be used besides fish fertilizer? Just wondering, we have lots of Miracle Grow. Thanks.
It will take about 6 weeks to be ready for transplanting, so start indoors or wait until night temperature are at 50s. If you are ok with non-organic fertilizers, Miracle gro food plant is a great choice too. Happy growing and thank you for visiting!

SO glad to hear it. I don't have that much of problem with cabbage worm, if I notice them I just pick them and feed them to birds. If you found them too many and damaging, spray B.T. solution on the leaves ( amzn.to/46qJZsB ). Hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!
What did you use to keep the pest away?
Checking your plants regularly and acting as soon as possible is the best pest control. But pest control depends on the type of pests. For example, two of most effective and organic pesticides you can use are B.T. or (Bacillus Thuringiensis) and Spinosad to kill caterpillars and worms. How do you save seedlings that have been blown away by the wind? I've managed to retrieve some and put them in moist soil, would they still grow? ( Just when everything finally started growing 😭)

This variety does best in forming big top heads, but the side shoots take a long time and I haven't waited for the second harvest. How do you keep the seedlings from becoming leggy? I have tried twice now and they keep coming up long and leggy. Is it the fish fertilizer?
Seedlings get leggy 99% due to lack of sufficient light. It is ok to start seeds inside, but as soon as they germinated, you need to take them outside to get 4-6 hrs of morning sunlight. Broccoli is a cool season crop and you can keep seedlings outside if it is not freezing. (only bring them inside at nights if temperature drops below 40F). The other possibility is that maybe you sow seed not deep enough (should be 1/4" to 1/2" deep). For the leggy seedlings, you can keep them and let them grow in full sun and when ready for planting, plant them deep covering part of the stem and they will do just fine. Wow, I think I am failing my broccoli sprouts.
It could also be because I’m raising a different breed maybe. But my saplings have small embryonic leaves, but abnormally long stems. The longest being a little over three inches long in fact.
Do they need more light perhaps? Or am I really that bad at gardening, I somehow screw up broccoli?
Edit: never mind, after sifting through the comments here, my former argument was correct. They are not getting enough sunlight. I need to start over again anyways, I also planted spinach and they did not even grow to begin with because I forgot to do research prior to sowing them.
The fact that you are trying it means that you already are a great gardener. The more you do, the more you will learn. keep it up!! Both broccoli and spinach are cold crops and will do fine outside, so as soon as they pop up, move them outside for a 4-6 hours of sunlight. Hope you will have a better results next time. do you prune your broccoli suckers?
I usually don't prune side shoots. Once the main head is harvested, they will grow to produce mini heads. Thanks for visiting.
@@TowardGarden the reason is that mine doesn't grow big, so I'm thinking I should remove side shoots to concentrate more energy to grow big heads.
If the variety will grow to large heads, then yes. Pruning the side shoots might help. @@GreenKonzult
